The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement. The design of composite joint which is the weakest part in the composite structures has become a very important research area since the composite materials are widely used in the aircraft and machine structure. In this paper, the new composite key joints that minimize the fiber discontinuity and strength degradation of adherend were proposed and their failure loads were evaluated. The failure index and damage area method were used for the failure prediction of the composite key joint. From the tests, the failure load of the composite key joint was 93% larger than that of a mechanical joint and the key joint whose slot depth and edge length were 0.88mm and 20mm had the largest failure load. Also, the analytic failure modes by the failure index and damage area were compared with experimental failure modes.

In this paper, the impact damage behavior of USN-150B carbon/epoxy composite laminates subjected to high velocity impact was studied experimentally and numerically. Square composite laminates stacked with $[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$ quasi-symmetric and $[0/90]_{ns}$ cross-ply stacking sequences and a conical shape projectile with steel core, copper skin and lead filler were considered. First high-velocity impact tests were conducted under various test conditions. Three tests were repeated under the same impact condition. Projectile velocity before and after penetration were measured by infrared ray sensors and magnetic sensors. High-speed camera shots and C-Scan images were also taken to measure the projectile velocities and to obtain the information on the damage shapes of the projectile and the laminate specimens. Next, the numerical simulation was performed using explicit finite element code LS-DYNA. Both the projectile and the composite laminate were modeled using three-dimensional solid elements. Residual velocity history of the impact projectile and the failure shape and extents of the laminates were predicted and systematically examined. The results of this study can provide the understanding on the penetration process of laminated composites during ballistic impact, as well as the damage amount and modes. These were thought to be utilized to predict the decrease of mechanical properties and also to help mitigate impact damage of composite structures.
Mode II delamination propagation is an important damage mode in laminated composites and this paper aims to investigate the behavior of this damage in laminated composite materials using acoustic emission (AE) technique. Three different lay-ups of glass/epoxy composites were subjected to mode II delamination propagation and generated AE signals were recorded. In order to investigate the propagation of delamination behavior of these specimens, AE signals were analyzed using Wavelet Packet Transforms (WPT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In addition, conventional AE analyses were used to enhance understanding of the propagation of delamination damage. The results indicate that different fracture mechanisms were the main cause of the AE signals. The dominant mechanisms in all the specimens were matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding and fiber breakage, with varying percentage of the damage mechanisms for each lay-up. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations were in accordance to the AE results.

For the damage tolerance improvement of conventional laminated composites, stitching process have been utilized for providing through-thickness reinforcements. 2D preforms were stacked with S-2 glass plain weave and S-2 glass MWK (Multi-axial Warp Knit) L type. 3D preforms were fabricated using the stitching process. All composite samples were fabricated by RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) process. To examine the damage resistance performance the low speed drop weight impact test has been carried out. For the assessment of damage after the impact loading, specimens were examined by scanning image. CAI (Compressive After Impact) tests were also conducted to evaluate residual compressive strength. Compared with 2D composites, the damage area of 3D composites was reduced by 20-30% and the CAI strength showed 5-10% improvement.
Hertzian indentation tests with sphere indenters were used to study the mechanical properties of glass-in-filtrated alumina and spinel composites and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and glass con-tents on contanct damage and strength. The spinel composite showed more brittle behavior than the alumina composite which is verified from indentation stress-strain curve cone cracks and quasi-plastic deformation developed at subsurface. Failure originated from either cone cracks(brittle mode) or deformation zone(quasi-plastic mode) above critical load for cracking(Pc) and yield ({{{{ {P }_{Y } }}) with the brittle mode more dominant in the spinels and the quasi-plastic mode more dominant in the aluminas. Even though brittle mode was dominant in the spinel composites the strength degradation from accumulation of damage above these critical loads was conspicuously small suggesting that the glass-infiltrated composites should be highly damage tolerant to the blunt contacts.

The PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor as one of smart sensors has good characteristics to detect the impact damages of composite structures. The capabilities of the PVDF film sensor for evaluating impact behaviors and damages of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to low-velocity impact were examined. From sensor signals, the specific wave-forms implying the damage were detected. The wavelet transform(WT) and Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) were used to decompose the piezoelectric sensor signals in this study. The impact behaviors of Gr/Ep laminates were simulated and the impact forces were reconstructed using the sensor signals. Finally, the impact damages were predicted by finite element analysis with the reconstructed forces. For experimental verification, a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy were carried-out. The extent of damage in each case was examined by means of ultrasonic C-scan and the measured damage areas were agreed well with the predicted areas by the F.E.A.

This paper evaluates experimentally the explosion proof of fiber reinforced cement composite(FRCC) panels with various fibers of 2 % volume fraction subjected to contact explosions using an emulsion explosive. As a results, the proportion of the total damage in FRCC panels is not biased scabbing on the rear side with contrast to plain panels, which means that the local damage of FRCC panels was significantly controlled. The experimental results presented useful information for prediction of limited thickness on the local damage subjected to contact explosions through comparison with existing damage evaluation prediction equations.
A wavelet based approach is proposed for structural damage detection in beams, plate and delamination of composite plates. Wavelet theory is applied here for crack identification of a beam element with a transverse on edge non-propagating open crack. Finite difference method was used for generating a general displacement equation for the cracked beam in the first example. In the second and third example, damage is detected from the deformed shape of a loaded simply supported plate applying the wavelet theory. Delamination in composite plate is identified using wavelet theory in the fourth example. The main concept used is the breaking down of the dynamic signal of a structural response into a series of local basis function called wavelets, so as to detect the special characteristics of the structure by scaling and transformation property of wavelets. In the light of the results obtained, limitations of the proposed method as well as suggestions for future work are presented. Results show great promise of wavelet approach for damage detection and structural health monitoring.
To study the seismic vulnerability of the composite material structure of adobe and timber, we collected and statistically analysed empirical observation samples of 542,214,937 m2 and 467,177 buildings that were significantly impacted during the 179 earthquakes that occurred in mainland China from 1976 to 2010. In multi-intensity regions, combined with numerical analysis and a probability model, a non-linear continuous regression model of the vulnerability, considering the empirical seismic damage area (number of buildings) and the ratio of seismic damage, was established. Moreover, a probability matrix model of the empirical seismic damage mean value was provided. Considering the coupling effect of the annual and seismic fortification factors, an empirical seismic vulnerability curve model was constructed in the multiple-intensity regions. A probability matrix model of the mean vulnerability index (MVI) was proposed, and was validated through the above-mentioned reconnaissance sample data. A matrix model of the MVI of the regions (19 provinces in mainland China) based on the parameter (MVI) was established.
Damage caused by impact on a vehicle composed of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic) composite to reduce weight in the aerospace industries is related to the safety of passengers. Therefore, it is important to understand the damage behavior of materials that is invisible in impact situations, and research through the FEM(finite element model) is needed to simulate this. In this study, FEM suitable for predicting damage behavior was constructed for impact analysis of unidirectional laminated composite. The calibration parameters of the MAT_54 Enhanced Composite Damage material model in LS-DYNA were acquired by inverse estimation through ANN(artificial neural network) model. The reliability was verified by comparing the result of experiment with the results of the ANN model for the obtained parameter. It was confirmed that accuracy of FEM can be improved through optimization of calibration parameters.
