Hollow core slabs generally have not been used for a bridge slab or a parking in Korea. In this study, high performance hollow core slabs, which has been the most thick one in domestic are re-designed and examined for practical use. Flexural tests were performed on four 315mm deep hollow core slabs to investigate adaptability for high vehicle live loadings and composite action with topping concrete. The precast slabs were reinforced with 10-l/2 inch dia-strands at the lower of slab and 4-l/2 inch dia-strands at tile upper of slab, and cast with 80mm deep topping concrete. Those tested hollow core slabs showed ductile failure behaviors which were conform to the current Ultimate Strength Design Method for a span of l0m up to the live load of 1, 000 kg/$m^2$.
Recently, the need for strengthening reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structure is increasing, particularly when there is an increase in load requirements, a change in use, a degradation problem, or some design/construction defects. Therefore, use of composite materials for structural repair presents several advantages and has been investigated all over the world. In this paper, the reinforced concrete slabs with epoxy - bonded AFRP sheed were experimentally investigated. Experimental data on strength. stiffness, material strain, deflection and mode of failure of strengthened slabs were obtained, and comparisons between the different flexural reinforcing schemes and reinforced concrete slabs without AFRP sheets were made It can be concluded that flexural strength of RC slabs strengthened with AFRP has increased, and that ductility of strengthened slabs has decreased.

In General, post-installed dowel bars are used as a shear connector to ensure the composite actions between new slabs and existing slabs in an apartment remodelling constructions expecially for enlarging the interior space outward the existing buildings. But, it has not been checked that the connection performance between existing and new slab is satisfactory not only for the structural safety condition but also the for serviceability and dwelling requirements. In this research, an experimental works were presented to evaluate the load transfer capacity for the planar joints between existing and new slab. The existing slabs were obtained from the existing apartment housing which will be demolished. Test results showed that the planar joints with post-installed dowel bars behaved in full composite modes until ultimate capacity of test specimens, so sufficient ultimate and serviceability performance are confirmed.
The behavior of connections between open sandwich slabs and double steel skin composite walls in steel plate-concrete(SC) structure is investigated by a series of experimental programs to identify the roles of components in the transfer of forces. Such connections are supposed to transfer shear by the action of friction on the interface between the steel surface and the concrete surface, as well as the shear resistance of the bottom steel plate attached to the wall. Experimental observation showed that shear transfer in slabs subjected to shear in short spans is explained by direct force transfer via diagonal struts and indirect force transfer via truss actions. Shear resistance at the interface is enhanced by the shear capacity of the shear plate as well as friction caused by the compressive force along the wall plate. Shear friction resistance along the wall plate was deduced from experimental observation. Finally, the appropriate design strength of the connection is proposed for a practical design purpose.

A type of one-way concrete composite slabs made by strain hardening cementitious composites (SHCC) deck combined with high tensile reinforcements was developed and evaluated by four-point slab bending test. The SHCC material was considered to have an high-ductile and strain hardening behavior in tension after cracking. From experimental comparisons with conventional reinforced concrete slab, the proposed SHCC and high tensile reinforced concrete composite slab showed more improved responses both in service and ultimate load capacities as well as in control of crack width and deflection.
The design of composite space trusses is a demanding task that involves taking several decisions on the truss depth, number of panels, member configuration, number of chord layers and concrete slab thickness and grade. The focus in this paper is on the design of top concrete slabs of composite space trusses, and in particular their thickness. Several effects must be considered in the process of designing the slab before an optimum thickness can be chosen. These effects include the inplane forces arising from shear interaction with the steel sub-truss and the flexural. and sheer effects of direct lateral slab loading. They also include a constructional consideration that the thickness must allow for sufficient cover and adequate space for placing the reinforcement. The work presented in this paper shows that the structural requirements on the concrete slab thickness are in many cases insignificant compared with the constructional requirements.

This study presented a composite beam element for modeling the inelastic behavior of the steel beam, which has composite slabs in steel moment frames that are subjected to earthquake ground motions. The effects of composite slabs on the seismic behavior of steel moment frames were investigated. The element can be considered as a single-component series hinge type model whose predicted analytical results were consistent with the experimental results. Likewise, the element showed a significantly better performance than the bare steel beam elements. The composite model can also predict more accurately the local deformation demands and overall response of structural systems under earthquake loading compared with the bare steel models. Therefore, composite stabs can significantly affect locally and globally predicted responses of steel moment frames.
Construction industry is one of the largest markets for composite materials. Composite materials are mostly utilized as surface coatings or concrete reinforcements, and they can hardly be found as a load bearing member in buildings. The three-dimensional composite structures with considerable bending, compressive and shear strengths are capable to be used as construction load bearing members. However, these composites cannot compete with other materials due to higher manufacturing costs. If the cost issue is resolved or their excellent performance is taken into consideration to overcome disadvantages related to economic-competitive challenges, these 3D composites can significantly reduce the construction time and result in lighter and safer buildings. Sandwich composite panels reinforced with 3D woven glass fabrics are amongst composites with highest bending strength. The current study investigates the possibility of utilizing these composite materials to construct ceilings and their application as slabs. One-to-one scale experimental loading of these composite panels shows a remarkable bending strength. Simulation results using ABAQUS software, also indicate that theoretical predictions of bending behavior of these panels are in good agreement with the observed experimental results.
Foam ceramic materials contribute to the explosion effect weakening on concrete structures, due to the corresponding excellent energy absorption ability. The blast resistance of concrete members could be improved through steel-foam ceramics as protective cladding layers. An approach for the modeling of dynamic response of steel-foam ceramic protected reinforced concrete (Steel-FC-RC) slabs under blast loading was presented with the LS-DYNA software. The orthogonal analysis (five factors with five levels) under three degrees of blast loads was conducted. The influence rankings and trend laws were further analyzed. The dynamic displacement of the slab bottom was significantly reduced by increasing the thickness of steel plate, foam ceramic and RC slab, while the displacement decreased slightly as the steel yield strength and the compressive strength of concrete increased. However, the optimized efficiency of blast resistance decreases with factors increase to higher level. Moreover, an efficient design method was reported based on the orthogonal analysis.

Accurate design models for predicting the shear resistance of headed studs in solid concrete slabs are essential for obtaining economical and safe steel-concrete composite structures. In this study, symbolic regression with genetic programming (GPSR) was applied to experimental data to formulate new descriptive equations for predicting the shear resistance of studs in solid slabs using both normal and lightweight concrete. The obtained GPSR-based nominal resistance equations demonstrated good agreement with the test results. The equations indicate that the stud shear resistance is insensitive to the secant modulus of elasticity of concrete, which has been included in many international standards following the pioneering work of Ollgaard et al. In contrast, it increases when the stud height-to-diameter ratio increases, which is not reflected by the design models in the current international standards. The nominal resistance equations were subsequently refined for use in design from reliability analyses to ensure that the target reliability index required by the Eurocodes was achieved. Resistance factors for the developed equations were also determined following US design practice. The stud shear resistance predicted by the proposed models was compared with the predictions from 13 existing models. The accuracy of the developed models exceeds the accuracy of the existing equations. The proposed models produce predictions that can be used with confidence in design, while providing significantly higher stud resistances for certain combinations of variables than those computed with the existing equations given by many standards.
