Ultimate behavior of composite beams with shallow I-sections

  • Bending behavior of reinforced concrete slabs encased over shallow I-sections at different levels of compression heads were investigated in present study. 1500 mm long I-sections were used to create composite slabs. Compression heads of monolithic experimental members were encased at different levels into the concrete slabs. Shear connections were welded over some of the I-sections. The testing was carried out in accordance with the principles of four-point loading. Results revealed decreasing load bearing and deflection capacities of composite beams with increasing encasement depths into concrete. Mechanical properties of concrete and reinforcing steel were also examined. Resultant stresses calculated for composite beams at failure were found to be less than the yield strength of steel beams. Test results were discussed with regard to shear and slip effect.

An Analytical Study on the Structural Behavior of the Composite Slab with New-Shaped Deckplate (신형상의 합성용 데크플레이트를 사용한 합성슬래브의 구조적 거동에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of the composite slabs with the new-shaped deckplate. In order to examine the deckplate as structural members, the composite slabs with new-shaped deckplate are compared and verified with the international design codes, and the simple inertia-moment equation of the composite slabs is suggested from the regression analysis of the results of the experiments. Besides, the finite element analysis was added on the purpose of the observation of structural behavior of the section items such as the Locking rib and the Dovetail. 36 experiments of composite slabs were performed with two new-type deckplates. And the finite-element analysis was performed by ABAQUS package with the function of the 3-dimension solid modeling.

Tests on composite slabs and evaluation of relevant Eurocode 4 provisions

  • The paper addresses some key issues related to the design of composite slabs with cold-formed profiled steel sheets. An experimental programme is first presented, involving six composite slab specimens tested with a view to evaluating Eurocode 4 (EC4) provisions on testing of composite slabs. In four specimens, the EC4-prescribed 5000 load cycles were applied using different load ranges resulting from alternative interpretations of the reference load $W_t$. Although the rationale of the application of cyclic loading is to induce loss of chemical bond between the concrete plate and the steel sheet, no such loss was noted in the tests for either interpretation of the range of load cycles. Using the recorded response of the specimens the values of factors m and k (related to interface shear transfer in the composite slab) were determined for the specific steel sheet used in the tests, on the basis of three alternative interpretations of the related EC4 provisions. The test results confirmed the need for a more unambiguous description of the m-k test and its interpretation in a future edition of the Code, as well as for an increase in the load amplitude range to be used in the cyclic loading tests, to make sure that the intended loss of bond between the concrete slab and the steel sheet is actually reached. The study also included the development of a special-purpose software that facilitates design of composite slabs; a parametric investigation of the importance of m-k values in slab design is presented in the last part of the paper.

Punching Strength of Long-Span PSC Deck Slabs (장지간 PSC 바닥판의 정적펀칭강도)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the static strength of long-span PSC deck slabs. In the previous study, the minimum thickness of PSC deck slabs in the composite two-girder bridge was proposed. To examine the structural behavior and safety of the PSC deck slabs designed in accordance with the proposed minimum thickness, 1/3 scaled PSC deck slabs in the composite two-girder bridge were tested under the static loading. The test results were compared with the predicted values proposed by the code and Matsui. Test results showed ultimate static strength of the PSC deck slabs designed in accordance with the proposed minimum thickness have enough margin of safety. The static failure mode of each test specimen was punching shear mode.

Determining the effective width of composite beams with precast hollowcore slabs

  • This paper evaluates the effective width of composite steel beams with precast hollowcore slabs numerically using the finite element method. A parametric study, carried out on 27 beams with different steel cross sections, hollowcore unit depths and spans, is presented. The effective width of the slab is predicted for both the elastic and plastic ranges. 8-node three-dimensional solid elements are used to model the composite beam components. The material non-linearity of all the components is taken into consideration. The non-linear load-slip characteristics of the headed shear stud connectors are included in the analysis. The moment-deflection behaviour of the composite beams, the ultimate moment capacity and the modes of failure are also presented. Finally, the ultimate moment capacity of the beams evaluated using the present FE analysis was compared with the results calculated using the rigid - plastic method.

  • The Eurocode 4 presents some negative aspects in the design of composite slabs by the m-k Method or the Partial Connection Method. On one hand, the component chemical adherence is not accounted for in the connection between the profiled steel sheet and the concrete. On the other hand, the application of these methods requires some fitting parameters that must be determined by full scale tests. In this paper, the Eurocode 4 methods are compared with a method developed at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, based on pullout tests, which can be a valid alternative. Hence, in order to calculate the necessary parameters for the three methods, several tests have been performed such as the full scale test described in Eurocode 4 and pull-out tests. This last type of tests is of small dimensions and implicates lower costs. Finally, a full-scale test of a steel-concrete composite slab with a generic loading is presented, with the goal of verifying the analytical formulation.

Influence of shear bolt connections on modular precast steel-concrete composites for track support structures

  • Through extensive research, there exist a new type of connection between railway bridge girders and steel-concrete composite panels. In addition to conventional shear connectors, newly developed blind bolts have been recently adopted for retrofitting. However, the body of knowledge on their influence and application to railway structures has not been thoroughly investigated. This study has thus placed a particular emphasis on the application of blind bolts on the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a feasible alternative constituent of railway track upgrading. Finite element modeling has been used to simulate the behaviours of the precast steel-concrete panels with common types of bolt connection using commercially available package, ABAQUS. The steel-concrete composite track slabs have been designed in accordance with Australian Standards AS5100. These precast steel-concrete panels are then numerically retrofitted by three types of most practical bold connections: head studded shear connector, Ajax blind bolt and Lindapter hollow bolt. The influences of bolt connections on load and stress transfers and structural behaviour of the composite track slabs are highlighted in this paper. The numerical results exhibit that all three bolts can distribute stresses effectively and can be installed on the bridge girder. However, it is also found that Lindapter hollow bolts are superior in minimising structural responses of the composite track slabs to train loading.

An Experimental Study on the Shear Behavior of Composite Slabs Using Newly Developed Flat Deck-Plate(ACE-DECK) (신개발된 평데크플레이트(ACE-DECk)를 이용한 합성술래브의 전단거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Longitudinal shear failure is the most common failure-type in composite slabs. In this paper, the shear-connection behavior of composite slabs with a particular profiled steel sheeting, so called ACE-DECK, having a depth of 60mm is studied experimentaly. Twenty two pull-out test specimens of different shapes, concrete topping thickness, and different steel sheeting thickness are carried out. It is founded that the shear connection behavior of composite slabs are not affected significantly in the steel sheeting thickness and concrete topping thickness. A new type of profiled steel sheeting is more effective in shear-bond strength that of existing flat-type deck plate, which can offer longitudinal shear strength in composite slope up to $3.6kgf/cm^2$
