A sandwich element is a special Hybrid structural form of the composite construction, which is consisted of three main parts : thin, stiff and relatively high density faces separated by a thick, light, and weaker core material. In a sandwich construction, the shear deformation of the faces. Therefore, in the calculation of the bending stiffness, the shear effect should be included. In this paper, the minimum weight is selected as an object function, as the weight critical structures are usually composed of these kind of construction. To obtain the minimum weight of sandwich panel, the principle of minimum potential energy is used and as for the design constraints, the allowable bending stress of face material, the allowable shear stress of core material, the allowable value of panel deflection and the wrinkling stress of faces are adopted, as well as the different boundary conditions. For the engineering purpose of sandwich panel design, the results are tabulated, which are calculated by using the nonlinear optimization technique SUMT.
In this paper, the sandwich panel composites consisting of core material and face sheet were studied to evaluate the mechanical properties, noise level and fire resistance including flammability, smoke, and toxicity. Four types of sandwich panel were prepared using various kinds of panel and honeycomb materials. It was observed that Al honeycomb/Al skin composite materials had the excellent flatwise tensile strength and edgewise compressive strength compared with other types of composites. The flatwise compressive strength and flexural strength of Nomex honeycomb/Al skin composite were higher than those of other composites. PMI form/Al skin composite showed the higher core shear strength and facing bending strength. From the experimental results of flame resistance tests, it can be said that the phenol based skin composite has the excellent flame retardation properties, which are similar to those of the commercial skin composites.

Experimental investigation on heat transfer ratio was firstly performed with three types of sandwich panels such as the Carbon/Epoxy Skin-Aluminum Honeycomb and Balsa Core Sandwich Panel of 37mm thickness, the Carbon/Epoxy Aluminum Skin-Honeycomb Core Sandwich Panel of 57mm thickness (including insulator) and the Carbon/Epoxy Skin-Aluminum Honeycomb Core Sandwich Panel of 37mm thickness based on the KS F 2278:2003(Insulation test method of windows). In additional to this investigation, experimental tests were also done for evaluation of heat transportation ratio with the Aluminum Skin- Aluminium Honeycomb Sandwich Panels of 27mm and 35mm thickness, and Aluminum Skin-Foaming Aluminum Sandwich Panel of 27mm thickness by the KS F2277:2002 (Insulation measuring method of construction component-Calibration heat box method or protective heat box method). In this study, it was found that the larger net heat transfer cross sectional area between the skin and the sandwich core is given, the higher heat transportation ratio occurs. It was also found that the hybrid type insulation had better insulation characteristics compared to the non-hybrid type insulation.
The present article reported the thermal buckling strength of the sandwich shell panel structure and subsequent improvement of the same by embedding shape memory alloy (SMA) fibre via a general higher-order mathematical model in conjunction with finite element method. The geometrical distortion of the panel structure due to the temperature is included using Green-Lagrange strain-displacement relations. In addition, the material nonlinearity of SMA fibre due to the elevated thermal environment also incorporated in the current analysis through the marching technique. The final form of the equilibrium equation is obtained by minimising the total potential energy functional and solved computationally with the help of an original MATLAB code. The convergence and the accuracy of the developed model are demonstrated by solving similar kind of published numerical examples including the necessary input parameter. After the necessary establishment of the newly developed numerical solution, the model is extended further to examine the effect of the different structural parameters (side-to-thickness ratios, curvature ratios, core-to-face thickness ratios, volume fractions of SMA fibre and end conditions) on the buckling strength of the SMA embedded sandwich composite shell panel including the different geometrical configurations.

In this paper, a study on low-velocity impact response of four different sandwich panels for the hybrid bodyshell and floor structure application of the Korean low floor bus vehicle was done. Square samples of 100mm sides were subjected low-velocity impact loading using an instrumented testing machine at six energy levels. Impact parameters like maximum force, time to maximum force, deflection at maximum force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for four different types of sandwich panels. The impact damage size and depth of the permanent indentation were measured by 3-Dimensional Scanner. Failure modes were studied by sectioning the specimens and observed under optical microscope. The impact test results show that sandwich panel with composite laminate facesheet could not observe damage mode of a permanent visible indentation after impact and has a good impact damage resistance in comparison with sandwich panel with metal aluminum facesheet.

Recently, with development of mechanics of materials, as pursuing the high speed of the ships, a demanding of composite construction which satisfies high strength and low weight at the same time is iner casing. A sandwich element is a type of composite construction, which is composed of thin, strong, stiff and relatively high density faces and a think, light, and weaker core material. As 2nd moment is increased by faces is separated from the neutral axis farther, a sandwich element is most effective light structural form. In this paper, the make a comparative study Aluminum Honeycomb Sandwich Panel(AHSP) and Aluminum Pyramid Sandwich Panel(APSP).
In this study, low velocity impact analysis on composite sandwich structure was performed. Sandwich structure configuration is made of Carbon-Epoxy face sheets and foam cores. For validating study, the results of an experimental and a finite element method analysis were compared previously. From the finite element method analysis results of sandwich panel, it was confirmed that the results of analysis was reasonable. Impactor velocity to initiate damage was estimated, and in order to investigate the damage at the predicted velocity, impact analysis using finite element method was performed. According to the impact analysis results of sandwich panel, it was confirmed that the damage was generated at the estimated impact velocity. Finally, The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement.

In this research, optical fiber sensors and shape memory alloys (SMA) were incorporated into sandwich panels for development of a smart honeycomb sandwich structure with damage detection and shape recovery functions. First, small-diameter fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were embedded in the adhesive layer between a CFRP face-sheet and an aluminum honeycomb core. From the change in the reflection spectrum of the FBG sensors, the debonding between the face-sheet and the core and the deformation of the face-sheet due to impact loading could be well detected. Then, the authors developed the SMA honeycomb core and bonded CFRP face-sheets to the core. When an impact load was applied to the panel, the cell walls of the core were buckled and the face-sheet was bent. However, after the panel was heated over the reverse transformation finish temperature of the SMA, the core buckling disappeared and the deflection of the face-sheet was relieved. Hence the bending stiffness of the panel could be recovered.
The numerical thermal frequency responses of the skew sandwich shell panels structure are investigated via a higher-order polynomial shear deformation theory including the thickness stretching effect. A customized MATLAB code is developed using the current mathematical model for the computational purpose. The finite element solution accuracy and consistency have been checked via solving different kinds of numerical benchmark examples taken from the literature. After confirming the standardization of the model, it is further extended to show the effect of different important geometrical parameters such as span-to-thickness ratios, aspect ratios, curvature ratios, core-to-face thickness ratios, skew angles, and support conditions on the frequencies of the sandwich composite flat/curved panel structure under elevated temperature environment.
