Research on the Solution and Properties of Ni-P/n-$Al_2O_3$ Electroless Composite Plating

  • In order to further improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the Ni-P coatings of electroless plating, electroless Ni-P/n-$Al_2O_3$ composite deposits were prepared by adding some nano $Al_2O_3$ Particles in Ni-P plating bath. The bath composition and proproties were studied in this paper. The orthogonal test was applied in order to get the new composite solution, taking the initial stable potential as evaluation standard and considering the elements correlation at the same time. The processing parameters have been optimized by single factor experiment in which the depositing speed was chosen as the evaluation standard. The results showed that the process is stable and the composite Ni-P/n-$Al_2O_3$ deposits werebright and smooth, whose hardness and corrosion resistance are much better than simple Ni-P coatings. Furthermore the surface appearance and structure of the composite Ni-P/n-$Al_2O_3$ coating were investigated by SEM and XRD method. It was proved that the coating surface is typical cystiform cells and its structure is amorphous. All test results ofcomposite coating showed that all various physical coating properties had been improved by adding nano-particles. The hardness of optimal coating is more than 600HV and increases to 1000HV after heat-treating, and its hardness is 20~50% higher than Ni-P coating. The rust points appeared in 200 hour by immersing the coating into the 10%HCl solution and the corrosive speed is $3{\times}10^{-3}mg/(cm^2{\cdot}h)$which was obtained after 300 hour. In the same condition Ni-P coating is $5.6{\times}10^{-3}mg/(cm^2{\cdot}h)$. The salt spray resistance of the layers can exceed 600h with the thickness $20{\mu}m$.

Excluding molten fluoride salt from nuclear graphite by SiC/glassy carbon composite coating

  • SiC coating and SiC/glassy carbon composite coating were prepared on IG-110 nuclear graphite (Toyo Tanso Co., Ltd., Japan) to strengthen its inertness to molten fluoride salt used in molten salt reactor (MSR). Two kinds of modified graphite were obtained and correspondingly named as IG-110-1 and IG-110-2, which referred to modified IG-110 with a single SiC coating and a SiC/glassy carbon composite coating, respectively. Both structure and property of modified graphite were carefully researched and contrasted with virgin IG-110. Results indicated that modified graphite presented better comprehensive properties such as more compact structure and higher resistance to molten salt infiltration. With the protection of coatings, the infiltration amounts of fluoride salt into modified graphite were much less than that into virgin IG-110 at the same circumstance. Especially, the infiltration amount of fluoride salt into IG-110-2 under 5 atm was merely 0.26 wt%, which was much less than that into virgin IG-110 under 1.5 atm (13.5 wt%) and the critical index proposed for nuclear graphite used in MSR (0.5 wt%). The SiC/glassy carbon composite coating gave rise to highest resistance to molten salt infiltration into IG-110-2, and thus demonstrated it could be a promising protective coating for nuclear graphite used in MSR.

$Al_2O_3$세라믹 용사피막의 특성개선에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Improvement of Properties of Sprayed $Al_2O_3$ Ceramic Coating Layer.)

  • Thermal spraying is one of the most common surface coating techniques to be used for many applications and flame spraying covers a wide range of different materials which can be coated onto various substrates. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mixed ratio in composite coatings on the mechanical and anti-corrosion properties. The five different types of composite coatings were made with $Al_2O_3$ ceramic and Ni-alloy powder on the mild steel substrate by flame spraying method. The mechanical properties such as microhardness, adhesive strength and erosion resistance and corrosion resistance were tested for the sprayed coating specimens. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The composite coating layers greatly improve the microstructure, erosion resistance and adhesive strength by increasing the content of Ni-Al alloy. 2. Microhardness of the compsite coating layer is decreased by increasing the content of Ni-Al alloy. 3. The anti-corrosion properties is considerably improved by increasing the compsite rate of Ni-Al alloy.

  • In this study, WC-l7wt% Co composite powder for thermal spray was fabricated by spray drying method. The agglomerated composite powder had spheroidal morphology and the particle size distribution was 20~60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. WC and Co were distributed homogeneously. However, the strength of the spray-dried agglomerate was low due to the pores within the agglomerate. Therefore, the spray-dried agglomerate was broken down during HVOF thermal spray and the microstructure was inhomogeneous with many pores within the coating layer. And the decomposition of WC to W and $W_{6}$ $C_{2.54}$ was accelerated. The strength and flowability of the agglomerate were greatly improved by sintering heat treatment(110$0^{\circ}C$, 1 hour, hi atmosphere), and then the coating layer showed dense and homogeneous microstructure with well-developed splats. The hardness of the coating layer was H $v_{300}$ = 1072.2.2.

  • The composite coating of suspended inert particles $\alpha$-Al2O3 and copper from acid sulphate bath was investigated at the Rotating Disk Electrode. Effects of rotation speeds of electrode, physical properties of electrolyte, the size and concentration of suspended particles on the codeposition ratio of Al2O3 and the enhancement of mass transfer of copper ions were examined. Particularly, new experimental method for the measurement of the codeposition ratio was suggested and also the characteristics of the composite coating layer were measured by Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry. Mass transfer of suspended particles system were increased up to 40% more than those of without suspended particles system. Optimum conditions of current density, hydrodynamics of RDE, and particles concentration showing maximum codeposition ratio were appeared in our experimental ranges. It was shown that the suspended inert particles were codeposited mainly near the surface of the composite coating layer.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube(CNT) reinforced hydroxyapatite composite coating with a thickness of $5{\mu}m$ has been successfully deposited on Ti substrate using aerosol deposition(AD). The coating had a dense microstructure with no cracks or pores, showing good adhesion with the Ti substrate. Microstructural observation using field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) showed that CNTs with original tubular morphology were found in the hydroxyapatite-CNT(HA-CNT) composite coating. Measurements of hardness and elastic modulus for the coating were performed by nanoindentation tests, indicating that the mechanical properties of the coating were remarkably improved by the addition of CNT to HA coating. Therefore, HA-CNT composite coating produced by AD is expected to be potentially applied to the coating for high load bearing implants.

  • In this paper, we fabricated flexible antenna radiator using the CNT/PVDF (carbon nanotube / polyvinylidene fluoride) composite film. We used polymer film as a matrix material for the flexible devices, and introduced CNTs for adding conductivity into the film resulting in obtaining performances of the antenna radiator. Spray coating method was used to form the CNT/PVDF composite radiator, and pattern formation of the radiator was done by shadow mask during the spray coating process. We investigated the electrical properties of the CNT/PVDF composite films with the CNT concentration, and also estimated the radiator performance. Finally we discuss the feasibility of the CNT/PVDF composite radiator for the flexible antenna.

  • This study formed a hard TiAlSiWN coating layer using Ti, Al, Si and W raw powders that were mechanically alloyed and refined. The TiAlSi and TiAlSiW coating targets were fabricated using a single PCAS process in a short time with the optimal sintering conditions. The coating targets were deposited on the WC substrate by forming coating layers using TiAlSiN and TiAlSiWN nitride nano-composite structures with an AIP process. The properties of the nitride nano-composite coating layers were compared according to the addition of W. The microstructure of the nitride nano-composite coating layer was analyzed, focusing on the distribution of the crystalline phases, amorphous phases ($Si_3N_4$), and growth orientation of the columnar crystal depending on the addition of W. The mechanical properties of the coating layers were exhibited a hardness of approximately $3,000kg/mm^2$ and adhesion of about 117.77N in the TiAlSiN. In particular, the TiAlSiWN showed excellent properties with a hardness of more than $4,300kg/mm^2$ and an adhesion of about 181.47N.

Using scratch test to evaluate cohesive bond strength of Mo composite coating

  • Bonding strength of a thermal sprayed coating is difficult to measure using a conventional pull-off test method. Scratch test is a potential alternative testing method. An adhesive and a cohesive bond strength of the coating can be measured by the pull-off test while the scratch test performed on the cross-section of the thermal sprayed coating can only demonstrate the cohesive bond strength of the coating. Nevertheless, it is still beneficial to perform the scratch testing on the cross-section of the coating for the sake of comparison thus providing an alternative to the pull-off test. The scratch test method can reduce testing time and cost in the long run due to a significant cost reduction in consumables and energy and time saving from the curing step of the glue used in the pull-off test. This research investigates the possibility of using the scratch test to measure the cohesive bond strength of Mo/NiCrBSi composite coating. The results from the pull-off test and the scratch test indicate that the cohesive bond strengths of the Mo composite coating show similar trend and that the cohesive bond strength are increased when increasing NiCrBSi content.

Incorporation of Montmorillonite/Silica Composite for the Corrosion Protection of an Epoxy Coating on a 2024 Aluminum Alloy Substrate

  • Layered silicate clay montmorillonite (MMT) has been used in nanocomposite coating to improve corrosion protection by reinforcing the barrier property. The better dispersion of MMT in the coating produces a higher barrier effect. Pretreatment with MMT could favor the delamination of clay platelets, facilitating MMT dispersion in the coating. In the present work, a montmorillonite/silica (MMT/Si) composite was prepared by the in situ sol-gel method. x-ray diffraction measurements and field-emission scanning electron microscopy observations showed silica crystal formation and increased basal spacing between the MMT platelets. Composite MMT/Si particles were introduced in an epoxy resin to reinforce the corrosion protection of the coating applied on the AA2024 surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed to characterize the protective property of the coating. The results demonstrated the high barrier effect of the coating containing 5 wt% of MMT/Si. Adhesion evaluation after a salt spray test exhibited a high adherence to the epoxy coating containing MMT/Si.
