  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of information commons and learning commons that has emerged in recent years, and point out the difference between the two concepts, as well as its implications for public libraries, which get lessons learned from learning commons at Japanese public libraries. To track its evolution to learning commons, the theoretical component of learning commons was analyzed. Based on the reference, a research framework for the case study of learning commons was developed. With IT technology diffusion, libraries have become information commons. However, the main mission of libraries should basically remain as learning. Because of this, libraries which function as information commons should go back to being learning commons, which are primarily places of learning. This research shows that libraries should stress its original basic mission which is learning, beyond being information commons in the Japanese library.

  • We propose effective motion and observation models for the position of a WiFi-equipped smartphone user in large indoor environments. Three component motion models provide better proposal distribution of the pedestrian's motion. Our Gaussian interpolation-based observation model can generate likelihoods at locations for which no calibration data is available. These models being incorporated into the particle filter framework, our WiFi fingerprint-based localization algorithm can track the position of a smartphone user accurately in large indoor environments. Experiments carried with an Android smartphone in a multi-story building illustrate the performance of our WiFi localization algorithm.

  • Due to increased concern about the distributed web application, the interest in EJB - server-side Java component architecture that enables to make out Business Logic without writing codes related to complicated distributed framework - is also increasing. Despite of these increased interest, However, efforts for reliability of these systems have been insufficient. Thus, in this paper, we propose specification technique for applying DbC approach, which can elevate the reliability of software in the Object-Oriented system development, in writing formal specification of EJB-based application. Through this specification technique, developers can gain reliability in the EJB-based application development.

  • This study is a comparative analysis of the creation and development of visual techniques used in girls' comics in the paradigmatic low and high-context cultures of American and Japan. As previous analyses have shown, there are qualitative differences in the expressive mechanisms employed in girls' comics in Eastern and Western cultures, and it is an investigation of this realm of expression that is the basis of this study. Particular emphasis is placed on an analysis of the structure of frames, one of the most fundamental expressive mechanisms in girls' comics. A close examination of this underlying structural component reveals that both cultures demonstrate autonomous growth, providing a theoretical framework for future studies.

  • High resolution satellite imagery is regarded as one of the important data sets to engineering application, as well as conventional scientific application. However, despite this general view, there are a few target applications using this information. In this study, the possibility for the future wide uses in associated with smart graphics of this information is investigated. The concept of smart graphics can be termed intelligent graphics with XML-based structure and knowledge related to semantic web, which is a useful component for the data dissemination framework model in a multi-layered web-based application. In the first step in this study, high resolution imagery is transformed to GML (Geographic Markup Language)-based structure with attribute schema and geo-references. In the second, this information is linked with GIS data sets, and this fused data set is represented in the X3D (eXtensible 3D), ISO-based web 3D graphic standard, with styling attributes, in the next stop. The main advantages of this approach using GML and X3D are the flourished representations of a source data according to user/clients’ needs and structured 3D visualization linked with other XML-based application. As for the demonstration of this scheme, 3D urban modelling case with actual data sets is presented.

  • This paper deals with wind fragility and risk analysis of high rise buildings subjected to stochastic wind load. Conventionally, such problems are dealt in full Monte Carlo Simulation framework, which requires extensive computational time. Thus, to make the procedure computationally efficient, application of metamodelling technique in fragility analysis is explored in the present study. Since, accuracy by the conventional Least Squares Method (LSM) based metamodelling is often challenged, an efficient Moving Least Squares Method based adaptive metamodelling technique is proposed for wind fragility analysis. In doing so, artificial time history of wind load is generated by three wind field models: i.e., a simple one based on alongwind component of wind speed; a more detailed one considering coherence and wind directionality effect, and a third one considering nonstationary effect of mean wind. The results show that the proposed approach is more accurate than the conventional LSM based metamodelling approach when compared to full simulation approach as reference. At the same time, the proposed approach drastically reduces computational time in comparison to the full simulation approach. The results by the three wind field models are compared. The importance of non-linear structural analysis in fragility evaluation has been also demonstrated.

  • EPCIS(EPC Information Services) system is a core component of EPCglobal Architecture Framework offering information of the freights, the time of awareness and the location of awareness on the EPCglobal Network. The role of EPCIS is to exchange information based on EPC. There are four kinds of event data which are object event data, aggregation event data, quantity event data, and transaction event data. These EPCIS events data are stored and managed in EPCIS repository. This study suggest the quantitative modeling about total number of EPCIS event data under the assumption to aware the RFID tags of items, cases(boxes), vehicles(carriers, forklifts, auto guided vehicles, rolltainers) at a time on the reading points. We also estimate the number of created EPCIS event data by the suggested quantitative modeling under scenario of process in the integrated logistics center based on RFID system And this study compare the TO-BE model with the AS-IS model about the total sizes of created EPCIS event data using the simulation, in which we suggested the TO-BE model as the development of the repository by skipping the overlapped records.

  • During the past 25 years, in the context of probabilistic safety assessment, efforts have been directed towards establishment of comprehensive pipe failure event databases as a foundation for exploratory research to better understand how to effectively organize a piping reliability analysis task. The focused pipe failure database development efforts have progressed well with the development of piping reliability analysis frameworks that utilize the full body of service experience data, fracture mechanics analysis insights, expert elicitation results that are rolled into an integrated and risk-informed approach to the estimation of piping reliability parameters with full recognition of the embedded uncertainties. The discussion in this paper builds on a major collection of operating experience data (more than 11,000 pipe failure records) and the associated lessons learned from data analysis and data applications spanning three decades. The piping reliability analysis lessons learned have been obtained from the derivation of pipe leak and rupture frequencies for corrosion resistant piping in a raw water environment, loss-of-coolant-accident frequencies given degradation mitigation, high-energy pipe break analysis, moderate-energy pipe break analysis, and numerous plant-specific applications of a statistical piping reliability model framework. Conclusions are presented regarding the feasibility of determining and incorporating aging effects into probabilistic safety assessment models.

  • Common-cause failure (CCF) events can significantly impact the availability of safety systems of nuclear power plants. For this reason, the International Common Cause Data Exchange (ICDE) project was initiated by several countries in 1994. Since 1997 it has been operated within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)/Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) framework and has successfully been operated over six consecutive terms (the current term being 2015-2017). The ICDE project allows multiple countries to collaborate and exchange CCF data to enhance the quality of risk analyses, which include CCF modeling. As CCF events are typically rare, most countries do not experience enough CCF events to perform meaningful analyses. Data combined from several countries, however, have yielded sufficient data for more rigorous analyses. The ICDE project has meanwhile published 11 reports on the collection and analysis of CCF events of specific component types (centrifugal pumps, emergency diesel generators, motor operated valves, safety and relief valves, check valves, circuit breakers, level measurement, control rod drive assemblies, and heat exchangers) and two topical reports. This paper presents recent activities and lessons learnt from the data collection and the results of topical analysis on emergency diesel generator CCF impacting entire exposed population.
