  • Development cases of space launch vehicle upper stage engine were studied. HM-7, Vinci, LE-5, RL10 engines are representative upper stage engines of Europe, Japan, and United States. It was realized that upper stage engines were developed with more than two engine test facilities and the development period was 5 to 8 years accompanied with 10~11 engines.

Impact spectrum of flood hazard on seismic vulnerability of bridges

  • Multiple hazards (multihazard) conditions may cause significant risk to structures that are originally designed for individual hazard scenarios. Such a multihazard condition arises when an earthquake strikes to a bridge pre-exposed to scour at foundations due to flood events. This study estimates the impact spectrum of flood-induced scour on seismic vulnerability of bridges. Characteristic river-crossing highway bridges are formed based on the information obtained from bridge inventories. These bridges are analyzed under earthquake-only and the abovementioned multihazard conditions, and bridge fragility curves are developed at component and system levels. Research outcome shows that bridges having pile shafts as foundation elements are protected from any additional seismic vulnerability due to the presence of scour. However, occurrence of floods can increase seismic fragility of bridges at lower damage states due to the adverse impact of scour on bridge components at superstructure level. These findings facilitate bridge design under the stated multihazard condition.

  • Suitable replacement materials for ultrathin SiO2 in deeply scaled MOSFETs such as lattice polarizable films, which have much higherpermittivities than SiO2, have bandgaps of only 3.0 to 4.0 eV. Due to these small bandgaps, the reliability of these films as a gate insulator is a serious concern. Ramped voltage, time dependent dielectric breakdown, and hot carrier effect measurements were done on 190 layers of TiO2 which were deposited through the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition of titanium tetrakis-isopropoxide (TTIP). Measurements of the high and low frequency capacitance indicate that virtually no interface state are created during constant current injection stress. The increase in leakage upon electrical stress suggests that uncharged, near-interface states may be created in the TiO2 film near the SiO2 interfacial layer that allow a tunneling current component at low bias.

  • This paper proposes a method to evaluate the TTC by considering uncertainty of weather. Impact of the contingency on the system performance could not be addressed in a deterministic way because of the random nature of the system equipment outage and the increase of outage probability according to weather condition. For this reasons, probabilistic approach is necessary to realize evaluation of TTC. This method uses a sequential MCS. In sequential simulation, the chronological behavior of the system is simulated by sampling sequence of the system operating states based on the probability distribution of the component state duration. Therefor, MCS is used to accomplish the probabilistic calculation of TTC with consideration of weather condition.

  • Photophysics of 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (HBQ) has been in controversy, in particular, on the nature of the electronic states before and after the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), even though the dynamics and mechanism of the ESIPT have been well established. We report highly time resolved fluorescence spectra over the full emission frequency regions of the enol and keto isomers and the anisotropy in time domain to determine the accurate rates of the population decay, spectral relaxation and anisotropy decay of the keto isomer. We have shown that the ~300 fs component observed frequently in ESIPT dynamics arises from the $S_2{\rightarrow}S_1$ internal conversion in the reaction product keto isomer and that the ESIPT occurs from the enol isomer in $S_1$ state to the keto isomer in $S_2$ state.

  • We developed $Sn^{4+}$-porphyrin complexes that show thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). TADF intensities increased with an increase of temperature because of an acceleration of the reverse intersystem crossing from triplet to singlet excited states by heat activation. TADF component provides a novel pathway for high efficiency OLEDs.

Emotion Expressiveness and Knowledge in Preschool-Age Children: Age-Related Changes

  • Emotion is a central feature of social interactions. In this study, we examined age-related changes in emotion expressiveness and emotion knowledge and how young children's emotion expressiveness and knowledge were related. A total of 300 children attending a daycare center contributed data for the study. Observation and interview data relevant to measures of emotion expressiveness and knowledge were collected and analyzed. Both emotion knowledge and expressed positive affect increased with age. Older preschool children expressed positive affect more frequently than did younger preschoolers. Older preschool children also labeled, recognized, and provided plausible causes mores accurately than did younger preschool children. In addition, we tested whether children's errors on the free labeling component conform to the structural model previously suggested by Bullock and Russell (1986) and found that preschool children were using systematic strategies for labeling emotion states. Relations between emotion expressiveness and emotion knowledge generally were not significant, suggesting that emotional competence is only gradually constructed by the child over the preschool years.

  • The flow characteristics around a floating cylinder in a swirling flow field in a vertical pipe with a length of 600mm and an inner diameter of 100mm is investigated by the use of the Stereoscopic-PIV system. The measurement system consists of two cameras, a Nd-Yag laser and a host computer. Optical sensors(LEDs) were used to detect the location of the floating cylinder and to activate the Stereoscopic-PIV system. A conditional sampling Stereoscopic-PIV system was developed in which the flow fields around the floating cylinder are measured at the events of the activations. It has been verified that the motion of the floating cylinder becomes stable when the azimuthal velocity component of the swirl flow is maintained at stable states.

  • A theoretical study of the hydration of the model compound of collagen, poly(Gly-Pro-Pro), has been carried out using empirical potential energy functions. The optimum locations and binding energies of water molecules bound to the model compound have been determined by minimizing the interaction energy. The stabilization energy due to the presence of water in the first hydration shell has been evaluated by comparing the internal interaction energies between the different groups of the model compound in its non-hydrated and hydrated states. The different energy components contributing to the overall stabilization are determined and discussed.

Probabilistic analysis of a partially-restrained steel-concrete composite frame

  • The paper investigates the seismic performance of a Partially-Restrained (PR) steel-concrete composite frame using the probabilistic approach. The analysed frame was tested at the ELSA laboratory of the Joint Research Centre of Ispra (Italy), while the representative beam-to-column composite connections were tested at the Universities of Pisa, Milan and Trento (Italy). The component modelling of both interior and exterior composite joints is described first, including the experimental-numerical validation. The Latin Hypercube method has been used to draw the probabilistic distribution curves of joints, and then the whole PR composite frame has been analysed. Pushover and incremental dynamic analyses have been carried out using the non-linear FE code SAP2000 version 9.1. The fragility and performance curves of the PR composite frame have been determined for four damage limit states.
