An experimental study is presented for the effect of number of terms of a pewee series type stress function on stress analysis around a hole in tensile loaded plate. The hybrid method coupling photoelastsic data inputs and complex variable formulations involving conformal mappings and analytical continuity is used to calculate tangential stress on the boundary of the hole in uniaxially loaded, finite width tensile plate. In order to measure isochromatic data accurately, actual photoelastic fringe patterns are two times multiplied and sharpened by digital image processing. For qualitative comparison, actual fringes are compared with calculated ones. For quantitative comparison, percentage errors and standard deviations with respect to percentage errors are caculated for all measured points by changing the number of terms of stress function. The experimental results indicate that stress concentration factors analyzed by the hybrid method are accurate within three percent compared with ones obtained by theoretical and finite element analysis.
The effects of seepage force and out-of-plane stress on cavity contracting and tunnel opening was investigated in this study. The generalized Hoek-Brown (H-B) failure criterion and non-associated flow rule were adopted. Because of the complex solution of pore pressure in an arbitrary direction, only the pore pressure through the radial direction was assumed in this paper. In order to investigate the effect of out-of-plane stress and seepage force on the cavity contraction and circular tunnel opening, three cases of the out-of-plane stress being the minor, intermediate, or major principal stress are assumed separately. A method of plane strain problem is adopted to obtain the stress and strain for cavity contracting and circular tunnel opening for three cases, respectively, that incorporated the effects of seepage force. The proposed solutions were validated by the published results and the correction is verified. Several cases were analyzed, and parameter studies were conducted to highlight the effects of seepage force, H-B constants, and out-of-plane stress on stress, displacement, and plastic radius with the numerical method. The proposed method may be used to address the complex problems of cavity contraction and tunnel opening in rock mass.
An experimental test is presented for photoelastic stress analysis around a crack tip in tensile loaded plate. The hybrid method coupling photoelastsic fringe inputs calculated by finite element method and complex variable formulations involving conformal mappings and analytical continuity is used to calculate full-field stress around the crack tip in uniaxially loaded, finite width tensile plate. In order to accurately compare calculated fringes with experimental ones, both actual and regenerated photoelastic fringe patterns are two times multiplied and sharpened by digital image processing. Regenerated fringes by hybrid method are quite comparable to actual fringes. The experimental results indicate that Mode I stress intensity factor analyzed by the hybrid method are accurate within three percent compared with ones obtained by empirical equation and finite element analysis.
This study reviews the influence function method(IFM) for calculating stress intensity factors (SIFs, K) and modifies it to apply for the estimating the residual fatigue life for the cracked components under complex stress fields. An IFM has been developed to analyze SIFs for surface cracks which are subjectedto nonuniformly distributed stresses. Through elastic superposition, the influence function method properly accounts for redistribution of stress as the crack grows through the component. This influence function is unique to the given geometry and independent of the loading. Some examples have been provided to show the effectiveness of the IFM including the distributions of K in a residual stress field. The significant effect of residual stress upon fatigue crack growth in a welded component has been demonstrated with the IFM.
Viscoelastic characteristics of agricultural products may be determined through three basic tests ; stress relaxation, creep, and dynamic test. Considering the changeability of living materials, dynamic test in which information is derived in a relatively short time appears to be highly desirable, in which either cyclic stress or cyclic strain is imposed and the remaining quantity (strain or stress) is measured. The periodically varying stress will also result in periodically varying strain which in a viscoelastic material should theoretically be out of phase with the stress, because part of the energy subjected to sample is stored in the material as potential energy and part is dissipated as heat. This behavior results in a complex frequency-dependent compliance denoted by J($i{\omega}$). The complex compliance and therefore the storage compliance, the loss compliance, the phase angle, and percent energy loss for the sample should be obtainable with a given static viscoelastic property of the material under static load. The complex compliance of the rough rice kernel were computed from the Burger's model describing creep behavior of the material which were obtained in the previous study. Also, the effects of cyclic load and moisture content of grain on the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of the samples were analyized. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The storage compliance of the rough rice kernel slightly decreased with the frequency applied but at above the frequency of 0.1 Hz it was nearly constant with the frequency, and the loss compliance of the sample very rapidly decreased with increase in the frequency on those frequency ranges. 2. It was shown that the storage compliance and the loss compliance of the sample increased with increase in grain moisture content. Effect of grain moisture content on the storage compliance of the sample was highly significant than effect of the frequency applied, but effect of the frequency on the loss compliance of the sample was more significant than effect of grain moisture content. 3. In low moisture content, the percent energy loss of Japonica-type rough rice was much higher than that of Indica-type rough rice, but, in high moisture content, vice versa.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of orthopedic forces on the craniofacial complex utilizing the three kinds of the head gear. (high pull head gear, straight pull head gear, cervical pull head gear) For this study, the teeth and alveolar bone and palate were reproduced from birefringent materials and other parts of craniofacial complex were coated with birefringent material on the model. The effect of orthopedic forces on the craniofacial complex was analyzed by photoelastic method using transmission polariscope and reflection polariscope. The results were as follows. 1. The cervical pull head gear had the greatest tipping effect on the maxillary molars and high pull head gear had the least tipping effect. 2. In areas stressed, the cervical pull head gear stressed the greatest degree. 3. Only cervical pull head gear produced stress at the zygomaticofrontal suture and the posterior region of palate. 4. The straight pull head gear and high pull head gear produced stress at just inferior to the anterior nasal spine. 5. The cervical pull head gear and straight pull head gear produced tensile stress at the fronto-maxillary suture. 6. The pterygoid plates of the sphenoid bone, the zygomatic arches, the junction of the maxilla with the lacrimal and ethmoid bone, and the maxillary molars were affected by three types of head gear.
A boundary element method is applied to the analysis of crack trajectory in materials with complex microstructure, such as discontinuously reinforced composite materials, and systems subjected to complex loading, such as indentation. The path followed by the crack(s) has non-trivial geometry. A study of the stress intensity factors and fracture toughness of such systems must therefore be accompanied by an analysis of crack trajectory. The simulation is achieved using a dual boundary integral method in planar problems, and a single boundary integral method coupled with substructuring in axisymmetric problems. The direction of crack propagation is determined using the maximum mechanical energy release rate criterion. The method is demonstrated by application to (i) a composite material composed of components having the elastic properties of aluminium (matrix) and silicon carbide (reinforcement), and (ii) analysis of contact damage induced by the action of an indenter on brittle materials. The chief advantage of the method is the ease with which problems having complex geometry or loading (giving rise to complex crack trajectories) can be treated.

A novel ZCS high frequency inverter in complex resonance applied for reduction of PM is developed. This inverter is suppressed the switching stress by using complex resonance. The stable operation is realized by ZCS using overlapping commutation phenomenon. The ZCS characteristics are investigated based on numerical analysis and experimental results.

For two dimensional elasticity, we suggest a new complex variable method using the Navier's displacement equation. This method gives alternative displacement and stress formulae to those resulting from the Muskhelishvili's complex function method.
