A new method on the evaluation of insulation oil was proposed. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was applied to investigate the properties of the insulating oil. For the diagnostics of oil degradation, three kinds of oils have been analyzed by THz-TDS. The degraded oil showed different optical and electrical constants compared with a new one. Generally, the power absorption coefficient, the refractive index, the dielectric constant and loss $tan{\delta}$ of the oil increase as the aging of insulating oil proceed. And the characteristics of two kind of insulation oil, 1-4 and 7-4, was compared in terahertz spectral region. Difference in refractive index and complex dielectric constant has been observed between the samples. The results of this study suggest that THz-TDS is a promising new means for evaluating degradation and identification of insulating oil.
SiO thin films are deposited by evaporator the refractive index of wave length, photon energy and the absorptive rate of these films are measured by spectroscopic ellipsometer. It is derived the absorptive rate and permitivity of SiO thin films from the equations that calculating the refractive index. And the result show good agreement with the calculated values and experimental values. As a result, the wave length of light is increased in the condition that the angle of incidence is fixed on SiO thin film, the basic absorption and the absorption impurities are found in the low wave length (below 450 nm in this study) and the reflective absorption and conductive absorption is increased by the form of exponential function over the low wavelength. The absorptive rate is increased by increased the angle of incidence and thickness of SiO film for the insulating layer. As the thickness of SiO film is increased, the value of complex permitivity is decreasing and as wave length of incidence is increased., the value of dielectric is linearly increasing.
Complex permittivity spectra of Allyl Chloride (AC), 2-Butanone (2-BU) and their binary mixtures over the entire range of concentration were obtained using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique in microwave frequency range at various temperatures. Static dielectric constant and relaxation time are obtained from complex permittivity spectra. Density ($\rho$) and refractive index ($n_D$) are also measured. These parameters are used to determine excess dielectric constant, excess inverse relaxation time, excess molar volume, excess molar refraction, polarity, Bruggeman factor and thermodynamic parameters viz. enthalpy of activation and entropy of activation. The values of static dielectric constant and relaxation time increases while density and refractive index decreases with the percentage of 2-Butanone in Allyl Chloride increases. Excess parameters were fitted to a Redlich-Kister equation.
We have studied the stability of W/O high internal phase emulsions(HIPE) containing water, cetyl dimethicone copolyol and oils varying magnesium sulfate in the range 0 to 0.5 wt% and oil polarities, respectively. The rheological consistency was mainly destroyed by the coalescence of the deformed water droplets. The greater the increase of complex modulus was, the less coalescence occurred and the more consistent the concentrated emulsions were. The increasing pattern of complex modulus versus volume fraction has been explained with the resistance to coalescence of the deformed interfacial film of water droplets in concentrated W/O emulsion. The stability is dependent on: (i) the choice of the oil is important, the requirements coincide with the requirements for the formation of the rigid liquid crystalline phases; and (ii) addition of salts the aqueous phase opposes the instability due to coalescence. Increasing the salt concentration increases the refractive index of the aqueous phase. It lowers the difference in the refractive index between the oil and aqueous phases. This decreases the attraction between the water domains, thus increasing the stability.
Adopting an elaborately designed reflective objective consisting of four mirrors, we have developed a rotating-polarizer-type microspot spectroscopic ellipsometer (SE) with an ultra-small spot size. The diameter of the focused beam, whether evaluated using a direct-image method or a knife-edge method, is less than 8.4 ㎛. After proper correction for the polarizing effect of the mirrors in the reflective objective, we unambiguously determine the dispersion of the complex refractive index and the thickness of monolayer MoS2 using the measured microspot-spectroellipsometric data. The measured ellipsometric spectra are sensitive enough to identify small variations in thickness of MoS2 flakes, which ranged from 0.48 nm to 0.67 nm.
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been used to study the optical and dielectric properties of three chalcogenide glasses: $Ge_{30}As_8Ga_2Se_{60}$, $Ge_{35}Ga_5Se_{60}$, and $Ge_{10}As_{20}S_{70}$. The absorption coefficients ${\alpha}({\nu})$, complex refractive index n(${\nu}$), and complex dielectric constants ${\varepsilon}({\nu})$ were measured in a frequency range from 0.3 THz to 1.5 THz. The measured real refractive indices were fitted using a Sellmeier equation. The results show that the Sellmeier equation fits well with the data throughout the frequency range and imply that the phonon modes of glasses vary with the glass compositions. The theory of far-infrared absorption in amorphous materials is used to analyze the results and to understand the differences in THz absorption among the sample glasses.
The effect of axial slit wall of outer cylinder on Taylor-Couette flow was experimentally investigated. The axial slits were azimuthally located along the inner wall of outer cylinder and the number of slits was 6, 9 and 18. The radius ratio and aspect ratio of the experimental models was 0.825 and 48, respectively. We used PIV method to measure the flow field and applied refractive index matching method to resolve the image distortion due to the complex model geometry. The results showed the effect of slit on the flow transition is increased as the number of slit increased. When the model has 6 slits, there were hardly the effect of axial slit wall and the flow transition happened at the same Reynolds number of plain smooth wall model case.
The effect of the axial slit of outer cylinder on Taylor-Couette flow was experimentally investigated. The radius ratio and aspect ratio of the model was 0.825 and 48, respectively. The depth of slits was 5mm and total 18 slits were azimuthally located along the inner wall of outer cylinder. We used PIV method to measure the flow field and applied refractive index matching method to resolve the image distortion due to the complex model geometry. The results showed the axial slit did not affect the transition from laminar Couette flow to Taylor vortex. The effect of slit wall appeared when the Reynolds number is larger than Re=143 and the slit model shows the transition to turbulent Taylor vortex flow above Re=143.
When a small absorbing particle is exposed to a strong thermal radiation incidence, it moves towards or away from the radiation source due to the nonuniform internal absorption of the radiation. It is called the photophoretic phenomena and governed by the asymmetry factor. An asymmetry factor for the total wavelength range is calculated to estimate the photophoretic phenomena of a particle in a combustor or in the atmosphere and compared to that for a single wavelength. The samples are soot particulates, water droplets, ice particles, silicon particles, $SiO_2$ particles, aluminium oxide particles, whose spectral complex refractive index are available. Although differences between total and monochromatic asymmertry factors are not much for relatively uniform distribution of the spectral refractive index, they are great in general. Therefore the use of the monochromatic factor will considerably deteriorate the accuracy of the calculation of the photophoresis.
