Machine tool design concepts have evolved towards high efficiency, accurate precision. high structural integrity, and multi-functional systems. Like many other structures, machine tools are also composed of many parts. When these parts are assembled, many kinds of joints are used. In the finite element analysis of these assembled structures, most joints are commonly considered as rigid joints. But, to get the more accurate solution, we need to model these joints in a appropriate manner. In this study, rational dynamic modeling and analysis method for complex structures are studied with special attention to slide way joints. For modeling of slide way joints, a general modeling technique is used by influence coefficients method which is applied to the conversion of detailed finite element model to the equivalent reduced joint model. The theoretical part of this method is illustrated and the method is applied to the structure with slide way joint. In this method. the non-linearity of the contact surfaces is considered within a proper range and the boundary effect of the joint model can be eliminated. The proposed method was applied to finite element modal analysis of a clamp jointed cantilever beam and slide way joints of the vertical type lathe. The method can also be used to other kinds of joint modeling. The results of these analysis were compared with those of Yoshimura models and rigid joint models. which demonstrated the practical applicability of the proposed method.

Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for 25- and 42-story buildings to evaluate their inherent properties, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Both are reinforced concrete buildings adopting a core wall, or with shear walls as the major lateral force resisting system, but frames are added in the plan or elevation. In particular, shear walls in a 25-story building are converted to frames from the 4th floor level downwards while maintaining a core wall throughout, resulting in a fairly complex structure. Due to this, along with similar stiffness characteristics in the principal directions, significantly coupled and closely spaced modes of motion are expected in this building, making identification rather difficult. By using various state-of-the-art system identification methods, the modal parameters are extracted, and the results are then compared. Three frequency-domain and four time-domain based operational modal identification methods are considered. Overall, all natural frequencies and damping ratios estimated from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for both buildings, while mode shapes exhibited some degree of discrepancy, varying from method to method. On the other hand, in comparison with analysis results obtained using the initial finite element(FE) models, test results exhibited a significant difference of about doubled frequencies, at least for the three lower modes in both buildings. To improve the correlation between test and analysis, a few manual schemes of FE model updating based on plausible reasons have been applied, and acceptable results are obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of each identification method used are addressed, and some difficulties that might arise from the updating of FE models, including automatic procedures, for such large structures are carefully discussed.

The finite element analysis is frequently used to predict dynamic responses of complex structures. Since the predicted responses often differ from experimentally measured ones, updating of the finite element models is performed to make the finite element results agree with the measured ones. Among several model updating methods, one is to use FRF(frequency response function) data without a modal analysis. This paper investigates characteristics of the model updating method in order to improve the method. The investigation is focused on how to obtain FRFs for unmeasured rotational displacements and how to consider damping. For the investigation simulated data and experimental data for a cantilever beam are used.

The cask is used to transfer the radioactive material in various fields required to withstand hypothetical accident condition such as 9m drop impact in accordance with the requirement of the domestic requlations and IAEA. So far the impact force has been obtained by the finite element method with complex computational procedure. In this study, the dynamic impact response of the cask body is analyzed using the mode superposition method, and the analysis method is proposed. The results we also validated by comparing with previous experimental results and finite element analysis results. The present method Is simpler than finite element method and can be used to predict the global impact response of cask

Recent studies have dealt with brake squeal in terms of the coupled vibration of brake component parts. In this paper, we assemble the mode models derived from FE analysis of the individual components of the drum brake system into the system model by considering the friction interaction of the lining and drum at the interface. The validity of the component models are backed up by the experimental confirmation work. By scrutinizing the real parts of the complex eigen-values of the system, the unstable modes, which may be strong candidate sources of squeal noise, are identified. Mode participation factors are calculated to examine the modal coupling mechanism. The model predictions for the unstable frequencies pointed well the actual squeal noise frequencies measured through field test. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to identify parametric dependency trend of the unstable modes, which would indicate the direction for the squeal noise reduction design. Finally, reduction of the squeal noise tendency through shape modification is tried.
Evaluation of stability in traditional designing of reinforced soil structures is executed by examination of internal and external stability. Analysis of internal stability is for pull-out and ductile strength. Analysis of external stability is for settlement, overturning and sliding. To minimize inherent uncertainties of soil properties and analytical model, reliability analysis was developed recently. In this study, reliability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for various failure mode of internal and external stability is proposed. By applying uni-modal bounds, Stability of system reliability of reinforced soil structures is evaluated by integrating multi failure mode for various analytical model. Because of complex consideration for various failure shapes and modes, it is possible to secure advanced safety by using simultaneous failure probability. And evaluation of reinforced soil structure is executed by representative index, simultaneous failure probability, than previous method.
The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, mu1ti-layer laminated beams. The damping radio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. Finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite beams with an ER fluid. For the validation of modeling methodology using viscoelastic theory the predicted dynamic properties are compared to the measured ones by author's previous work. They are in good agreement. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with an ER fluid.
This paper discusses the techniques, procedures and the results of the ground vibration test(GVT) performed on the development aircraft and the simple procedure of FE model updating technique from the GVT results. The GVT was carried out using random excitation technique with MIMO(Multi-Input-Multi-Output) data acquistion method, and taking full advantage of poly-reference global parameter estimation technique to identify the vibration modes. In dynamic FE modeling, the aircraft was represented by beam elements and all dynamic analysis was performed using MSC/NASTRAN for this model. In updating procedure, the stiffness of the beam model was adjusted iteratively so as to get the natural frequencies and mode shapes close to the GVT results.

In order to obtain dynamic behaviors of complex structures, it demands large amounts computational cost and time to perform the numerical analysis. The model reduction method helps these problems by dividing the full model into primary and unnecessary parts. In this research, we perform the modal analysis using the dynamic substructuring method, which is one of the model reduction methods, in order to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the cylindrical structures efficiently. To select the master degrees of freedom (dofs), we consider the mode shapes of the cylindrical structures. And then, we identify the validity of the dynamic substructuring method by applying the method to the simple cylinder and core support barrel (CSB) which is one of the reactor internals with the cylindrical shape. The results demonstrate that the dynamic characteristics from the dynamic substructuring method are well matched with the original method.
The area of this study will cover the location-wise seismic response variation of an electrical cabinet in nuclear power point (NPP) based on classical reliability analysis. The location-based seismic ground motion (GM) selection is carried out with the help of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis using PSHRisktool, where the variation of reliability analysis can be understood from the relation between the reliability index and intensity measure. Two different approaches such as the first-order second moment method (FOSM) and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) are helped to evaluate and compare the reliability assessment of the cabinet. The cabinet is modeled with material uncertainty utilizing Steel01 as the material model and the fiber section modeling approach is considered to characterize the section's nonlinear reaction behavior. To verify the modal frequency, this study compares the FEM result with recorded data using Least-Squares Complex Exponential (LSCE) method from the impact hammer test. In spite of a few investigations, the main novelty of this study is to introduce the reader to check and compare the seismic reliability assessment variation in different seismic locations and for different earthquake levels. Alongside, the betterment can be found by comparing the result between two considered reliability estimation methods.
