  • An engineering estimation equation for the crack opening displacement (COD) is proposed for a complex cracked pipe, based on the reference stress approach. To define the reference stress, a simple plastic limit load analysis for the complex cracked pipe subjected to combined bending and tension is performed considering the crack closure effect in the compressive-stressed region. Comparison with ten published test data and the results from existing method shows that the present method not only reduces non-conservatism associated with the existing method, but also provides consistent and overall satisfactory results.

  • Since a non-nulling method of five-hole probes is valid only when the flow angle is within the calibrated angle range, it can not be used in a complex flow field. Full angle range pressure coefficient maps show that widely used nulling methods do not guarantee correct alignment of the probe with the flow direction in the unknown complex flow field. Zone decision method and features of zone map were studied by investigating the full angle range pressure coefficient maps. A reliable and efficient new nulling algorithm using zone decision by pressure ordering is proposed and verified. Since the zone decision method by pressure ordering can decide whether the flow is within the calibration angle range or not, it is useful in wide angle nonnulling methods, too.

  • The optimum design parameters of several hydraulic systems are obtained using the complex method that is one kind of constrained direct search method. First, the parameters of lead-lag controller of the direct drive servovalve is designed using the complex method to satisfy the steady-state error requirement. Second, the optimum locating point of hydraulic cylinder Is determined to minimize the cylinder force in the operation range of rotational sluice gate. For the third application case, the optimum piston area of hydraulic cylinder is determined to minimize the man power to elevate the manually operated sluice gate.

  • This paper provides a numerical solution for a finite internally cracked plate using hybrid crack element method (HCE). In the formulation, an inclined crack is placed in any place of a rectangular element and the complex variable method is used. The complex potentials are expressed in a series form, and several undetermined coefficients are involved. The complex potentials for the cracked rectangle are first suggested in this paper. Based on a variational principle, the element stiffness matrix can be evaluated. The next steps are same as in the usual finite element method. Several numerical examples with computed stress intensity factor and T-stress are presented.

  • The modified power method has been studied by many researchers to calculate the higher eigenmodes and accelerate the convergence of the fundamental mode. Its application to multidimensional problems may be unstable due to degenerated or near-degenerated eigenmodes. Complex eigenmode solutions are occasionally encountered in such cases, and the shapes of the corresponding eigenvectors may change during the simulation. These issues must be addressed for the successful implementation of the modified power method. Complex components are examined and an approximation method to eliminate the usage of the complex numbers is provided. A technique to fix the eigenvector shapes is also provided. The performance of the methods for dealing with those aforementioned problems is demonstrated with two dimensional one group and three dimensional one group homogeneous diffusion problems.

  • The flow distribution characteristics in a complex duct system have been investigated in this paper by three means, namely experimental measurement, numerical simulation and the Extended T-method analysis. While the exit flow rates predicted by the three-dimensional CFD calculation and those given by the experiment show a close agreement, the results from the one-dimensional Extended T-method are found to differ from the experiment by -22.2% to 26.3% for the various exits. These discrepancies may be attributed to the underlying limitation concerning the fitting loss coefficients, which assume that the flow in front of the fittings is fully developed. It is proposed that, in order to analyse the three-dimensional flow distributions in a complex duct system by one-dimensional analysis such as the Extended T-method, further Improvements to the fitting loss coefficients should be made.

  • A fast gamma-ray dose rate assessment method for complex geometries based on stylized model reconstruction and point-kernel method is proposed in this paper. The complex three-dimensional (3D) geometries are imported as a 3DS format file from 3dsMax software with material and radiometric attributes. Based on 3D stylized model reconstruction of solid mesh, the 3D-geometrical solids are automatically converted into stylized models. In point-kernel calculation, the stylized source models are divided into point kernels and the mean free paths (mfp) are calculated by the intersections between shield stylized models and tracing ray. Compared with MCNP, the proposed method can implement complex 3D geometries visually, and the dose rate calculation is accurate and fast.

  • The substructure synthesis method is used for making it easy to analyze vibration systems generally in vibration field. In the past, this method has been to be used mainly because of shortage of computer memory and CPU time. But recently this method is used for analyzing complex structure or identifying the characteristics of systems precisely. The purpose of this study is to develop acoustic substructure synthesis method that can be applied to acoustic modal analysis of complex acoustic systems. Acoustic modal analysis method to be introduced here is a method that analyze acoustic natural mode shape of the complex acoustic system by the principle of CMS(component mode synthesis method). This paper describes the acoustic modal analysis of the acoustic finite element model of simple expansion pipe by acoustic substructure synthesis method. The resutls of acoustic modal analysis analyzed by Acoustic substructure synthesis method and the results by FEM(finite element method) shows good agreement.

  • Inclusion complex formation of fenbufen with ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$ in water and in solid state was comfirmed by solubility method, ultra violet absorption, circular dichroism and infra-red spectroscopies, differential thermal analysis, and X-ray diffractometry. A solid complex of fenbufen with ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$ in 1 : 1 molar ratio was prepared by the freeze-drying method, its dissolution characteristics in water and its analgesic and antiinflammatory effect in mouse or rat were examined. The apparent release of fenbufen from the inclusion complex was significantly improved, hut no significant difference in its analgesic and antiinflammatory effect was found.

  • Sodium alizarin sulfonate forms stable complex with uranyl ion, particularly over pH 3.85 condition. Spectrophotometric measurements have been used to study these complex. The continuous variation method and mole ratio method have been used to establish that the most stable complex contains one uranyl ion per sodium alizarin sulfonate.
