  • In this paper, the lines of investigation on a problem of the development of remote acoustic sensing methods in oceanology are formulated. This paper summarizes the results of investigations into the possibilities for monitoring temperature and flow fields in shallow seas. In the discussed experiments, the instrumentation being constituents of the complex for long-duration remote monitoring of marine medium climatic variability and that of the acoustic tomography of shallow sea dynamic processes is used. The acoustic instruments were located on the POI FEB RAS acousto-hydrophysical polygon (Pacific Oceanological Institute, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) near the Gamov Peninsula. Acoustic receiving and transmitting systems operating with multiplex phase-manipulated signals (of M-codes) at frequency range 250-2500 Hz form the basis for this complex.

  • In our previous studies, we have observed that curcumin and momordin I isolated from Ampelopsis radix inhibit the formation of Fos-Jun-activation protein-1 (AP-1) DNA complex. We have screened more effective compounds which have a 5-membered ring framework like momordin I and have modified disaccharide or carboxylic acid portions in momordin I. We synthesized momordin I derivatives according to the published method with slight modification. Synthetic momordin I derivatives showed remarkable inhibitory activities on Fos-Jun-AP-1 DNA complex formation results in in vitro assays. The $IC_{50}$ values of momordin I derivatives were about 4.0 $\mu$M in an electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). This value is about 125 times higher than that of curcumin and about 12 times higher than that for curcumin derivative C1, and moreover about 30 times higher than that for momordin I. We found momordin I derivatives (a) and (b) are the strongest inhibitory compound for Fos-Jun-AP-1 DNA complex formation.

  • The solubilities of the n-propyl iodide in nitrobenzene and m-xylene have been measured at 8$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$ and 25$^{\circ}C$ in the presence and the absence of gallium iodide. When gallium iodide does not exist in the system, the solubility of n-propyl iodide in m-xylene is greater than in nitrobenzene, indicating a stronger interaction of n-propyl iodide with m-xylene than that with nitrobenzene. It could be thought that n-propyl iodide forms unstable complex with gallium iodide in the presence of gaillium iodide in the system. This complex has been assumed in various ways and evaluated, that instability constant (K value) is relatively certain under the assumption of 1:1 complex, n-C$_3H_7I{\cdot}GaI_3$. Therefore, the complex would form the following equilibrium in the solution: n-C$_3H_7{\cdot}GaI _3{\rightleftharpoons}n-C_3H_7I+1/2Ga_2I_6$ the instability of the complex of n-propyl iodide with gallium iodide is compared with similar complexes of gallium iodide with methyl iodide. The changes of enthalpy, free energy and entropy for the dissociation of the complex are also calculated.

  • The taxonomy of the Isodon excisus complex has been ambiguous and problematic because the morphological characters, especially characters related to the leaf distinguishing subgroups of the complex in the original descriptions, are variable. To elucidate the taxonomic structure of the I. excisus complex in Korea, 34 characters were measured from 70 OTUs representing different locations and analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). The analysis showed that principle component axis 1, 2, 3 (PC1, PC2, PC3) represents 52.0% of the total variance and characters showing high loading values for PC1 were leaf shape, density of non-glandular hairs on the lower surface of the leaf, and characters related to the teeth of the leaf. The length of apical tooth and the angle between two widest points of the leaf were highly correlated to PC2 and PC3, respectively. Three-dimensional scatter plotting of OTUs for PC1, PC2, and PC3 axis showed that the areas of previously recognized three subgroups of I. excisus completely overlapped. Our result supported that just one taxon, I. excisus var. excisus, should be recognized in the complex at the variety level.

  • We have made a multi-wavelength study of the X-ray bright giant shell complex 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This is the one of the largest H II complexes in the Local Group. The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes 64-m single dish observations reveal that the distribution and internal motions of H I gas show the effects of fast stellar winds and supernova blasts. The hot emitting gas within the 30 Doradus complex and the entire giant H II complex are encompassed by an expanding H I shell. We investigate the dynamical age of this H I shell and compare to the age of starbursts occurred in the 30 Doradus nebula using the radiative transfer model and the infrared properties.

  • Fas-associated death domain (FADD) is an adapter molecule that bridges the interaction between receptor-interacting protein 1 (RIP1) and aspartate-specific cysteine protease-8 (caspase-8). As the primary mediator of apoptotic cell death, caspase-8 has two N-terminal death-effector domains (DEDs) and it interacts with other proteins in the DED subfamily through several conserved residues. In the tumor necrosis receptor-1 (TNFR-1)-dependent signaling pathway, apoptosis is triggered by the caspase-8/FADD complex by stimulating receptor internalization. However, the molecular mechanism of complex formation by the DED proteins remains poorly understood. Here, we found that direct DED-DED interaction between FADD and caspase-8 and the structure-based mutations (Y8D/I128A, E12A/I128A, E12R/I128A, K39A/I128A, K39D/I128A, F122A/I128A, and L123A/I128A) of caspase-8 disrupted formation of the stable DED complex with FADD. Moreover, the monomeric crystal structure of the caspase-8 DEDs (F122A/I128A) was solved at 1.7 Å. This study will provide new insight into the interaction mechanism and structural characteristics between FADD and caspase-8 DED subfamily proteins.

  • Today, people are becoming more conscious regarding environmental-friendliness, and the society as a whole is becoming more aware of it. With such phenomenon, the purpose of this research is to examine how comfort and pleasantness of indoor environment influences when selecting a place for multi-cultural complex. To demonstrate the stated hypothesis, I have preceded the experiment by selecting the C multi-cultural complex of closed-type structure and T multi-cultural complex of open-type structure. The next step I took, in order to validate the public's awareness of environmental-friendliness, was conducting a survey. I then deducted a conclusion through comparison and analysis of experiment measures with survey result. As a result of the research, the experiment measures of each air, light, heat condition of the T multi-cultural complex of open-type structure had a higher measurement for the comfort and pleasantness than the C multi-cultural complex of closed-type structure. Moreover, after validating the consciousness of the public through the survey, they had a tendency preferring T multi-cultural complex of open-type structure over C multi-cultural complex of closed-type structure in terms of comfort and pleasantness. To summarize, it is proper to conclude that the criteria - comfort and pleasantness of indoor environment - has influenced significantly when it comes to selecting a multi-cultural complex through both the experiment and the survey result.

  • Complex-cultural facilities in the contemporary era are significantly influenced by the anti-modernism and space relativism movement of the 20th century. Complex-cultural facilities have the complex-layered space. In many contemporary buildings, this complex-layered space has void center space within it which primarily functions as indoor plaza. This study pays attention to the fact that the design of indoor plaza has developed differently in Europe and the US, which vividly demonstrates spatial relativism in contemporary buildings. With this backdrop, I analyze the architectural and cultural backgrounds of indoor plaza in Europe and the US. In addition, I examine the cultural functions and visual interpretation of indoor plaza in the regions to compare the design features and functionality.
