  • To develop more compact and light generators which have high capacity, the most important thing that should be considered is the inner cooling system. Under all circumstances, the temperature of rotor and stator windings must be kept below the maximum temperature of insulation to maintain reliability and prolong durability of the machine. Therefore, the development of more effective cooling system and the exact prediction of windings are essential to produce our unique generator model which is reliable and competitive in international market. In this study, the flow of cooling air and the temperature distribution of winding is analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics. This analysis can lead to optimize the structure of cooling system and predict a local temperature rise.

The Effect of Supply Chain Dynamic Capability on Competitiveness and Business Efficiency of Vietnamese Wood Enterprises

  • Purpose: Developing and nurturing supply chain dynamic capability is one of the leading solutions to create competitive advantages, maintain growth and sustainable development for businesses. The study was conducted to experimentally confirm the impact of supply chain dynamic capability on competitiveness and business efficiency for Vietnamese wood enterprises. Research design, data and methodology: The study surveyed 236 managers of Vietnamese wood manufacturing and distribution enterprises. The authors applied the structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the relationship between the dynamic capability of the supply chain and the competitiveness, business efficiency of enterprises to achieve those goals. Results: The results show that businesses owning supply chain dynamic capability will have better competitiveness and business efficiency. Especially, in the context of Vietnamese wood sector, the larger the scale of business, the more profound the impact of supply chain dynamic capability on competitiveness and business efficiency. Conclusions: Focusing on developing supply chain dynamics would be a promising solution to improve the competitiveness of Vietnam's wood enterprises in the global market.

  • The symbiotic dynamics of Bradyrhiwbium japonicum YCK strains indigenous to Korean soils were investigated accordingly to their competitive conditions for nodulation. For this experiment the single strain inoculants of YCK strains and the mixed inoculants of one YCK strain and one USDA strain were applied to Korean Jangbaekkong and American Clark soybeans at mollisol soils(Torroxic Haplustoll, pH 6.8). The results were summarized as follows : 1. The symbiotic effectiveness of B. japonicum YCK strains was increased on the average of nitrogen accumulation by mixing with USDA strains, especially with strain USDA 110. 2. The effectiveness of each mixed inoculant was affected by soybean cultivar. 3. YCK strains occupied on the average of 83 and 86 % of the nodules against strain USDA 110 on Jangbaekkong and Clark soybeans, respectitvely. 4. The most effective strain among three YCK strains was strain YCK 213 as a single inoculant and was strain YCK 141 as a mixed inoculant with USDA strains. 5. The mixed inoculants of YCK strains and strain USDA 123 showed antagonism for nodulation.

  • Architecture-based competition has become a very important issue in many industries. As companies seek lower cost, fast development, and more customizability at the same time, modular architecture of products and processes seem to be an inevitable choice. Existing literature, however, has only focused on the basic contents of architecture-based competition. Different competitive environments and technological competencies of incumbent companies influence the evolutionary dynamics of dominant architecture of industries. In this paper we suggest a new theoretical framework to deal with the complex co-adaptation process of architecture-based competition. We first explore the emerging modular architecture in Chinese commercial vehicle industry, and then compare it with the architecture strategies of Korean companies. Based on the explorative case study, we propose new hypotheses relating the market demand, technological competencies of major players and dominant architecture in an indus-try.

Competitive Ability and Allelopathy of Ericaceous Plants as Potential Causes of Conifer Regeneration Failures (Ericaceous식물의 allelopathy와 경쟁력에 의한 침엽수 갱신 저해)

  • Certain ericaceous understory plants of temperate forests proliferate following forest clearcutting and fire. Rapid vegetative growth of these plants may affect conifer regeneration due to their strong competitive abilities and allelopathic properties. Planted conifers in these shrub-dominated habitats experience "growth check" which may result in a loss of productivity or in extreme cases total failure of forest regeneration. This growth check phenomenon is exemplified in Calluna Sitca spruce Scots pine ecosystems of western Europe, Kalmia black spruce ecosystem of eastern Canada and Gaultheria-cedar/hemlock ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Dynamics of Kalmia black spruce ecosystem following disturbance was used to explain the mechanism of conifer growth inhibition and their regeneration failure. It is argued that in addition to competition for nutrients, Kalmia allelopathy plays a major role in growth inhibition of black spruce. This conclusion is supported by the results of various field, laboratory and greenhouse experiments. Eight phenolic compounds were isolated and identified from the leaves of Kalmia angustifolia, four of which are known to be highly phyotoxic to black spruce. Methods of overcoming the allelopathic effects of Kalmia in order to enhance black spruce regeneration in Kalmia-dominated sites are discussed.

Sports injuries: a 5-year review of admissions at a major trauma center in the United Kingdom

  • Purpose: Sports offer several health benefits but are not free of injury risk. Activity dynamics vary across sports, impacting the injury profile and thereby influencing healthcare resource utilization and health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate sports-related major trauma cases and compare differences across sports and activity groups. Methods: A retrospective case notes review of sports-related major traumas over a 5-year period was conducted. Demographic, hospital episode-related, and health outcome-related data were analyzed, and differences were compared across sports and activity groups. The Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at discharge was used as the primary outcome measure and the length of hospital stay as the secondary outcome measure. Results: In total, 76% of cases had good recovery at discharge (GOS, 5), 19% had moderate disability (GOS, 4), and 5% had severe disability (GOS, 3). The mean length of hospital stay was 11.2 days (range, 1-121 days). The most severely injured body region was the limbs (29.1%) and vertebral/spinal injuries were most common (33%) in terms of location. A significant difference (P<0.05) existed in GOS across sports groups, with motor sports having the lowest GOS. However, no significant differences (P>0.05) were found in other health-outcome variables or injury patterns across sports or activity groups, although more competitive sports cases (67%) required admission than recreational sports cases (33%). Conclusions: Spinal injuries are the most frequent sports injuries, bear the worst health outcomes, and warrant better preventive measures. Head injuries previously dominated the worst outcomes; this change is likely due to better preventive and management modalities. Competitive sports had a higher injury frequency than recreational sports, but no difference in health outcomes or injury patterns.

  • This study explores the role of organizational culture, job characteristics, and work values and orientation in shaping the competitiveness of a multinational company (MNC) based in Korea. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of these variables on the competitiveness attributes of the organizational culture profile through MR-QAP analysis. Data were collected from 161 employees in 15 different teams at a Korean automotive company headquartered in Seoul. The results of the study revealed the impact of network characteristics associated with competitive organizational culture on competitiveness. 'found to have a negative effect on competitiveness. Among the organizational culture profiles, social responsibility, supportiveness, innovation, and performance orientation have a significant positive effect on competitive organizational culture, while emphasis on rewards and stability have no significant effect. These findings provide practical implications for understanding the complex dynamics of organizational culture and promoting strategic approaches to enhance organizational competitiveness.

Investigating the Effect of Open Skies Policies (항공자유화의 추진이 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • As open skies polices have permeated all over the world, Korea's basic direction of aviation policy is promoting the benefit of the public and the national carriers' competitive power by establishing open skies agreements between the countries. The open skies' directions should be promoted by considering the relationships of various attributes such as governments, airlines, and passengers. To decide the right directions of open skies, we should investigate the economic effects of open skies policies. This research develops a simulation model to analyze the dynamic characteristics of open skies. By using the developed model, this research analyzes the economic effects of open skies. The results showed that open skies have direct impacts on not only frequencies, airfare, consumer welfare but also air transport industry and regional economy. Therefore, it is necessary to take suitable aviation policy that can increase the effects of open skies.

  • This paper critically examines the role performance of local distributors within the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model, while also considering the moderating influence of market competition on the organism (O) and response (R) elements. Adopting a holistic approach, the SOR model provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing how external stimuli, including distributive, procedural, and interaction unfairness, interact with internal psychological processes, such as perceived unfairness, to shape the long-term orientation of importing agents. Moreover, this study acknowledges the pivotal role of market competition in the operational context of local distributors. It posits that competitive market dynamics play a crucial role in intensifying the relationship between behavioral factors and the long-term orientation of distributors, thereby revealing contingent effects within the SOR model. Through the exploration of these dynamics, this study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the interplay among external stimuli, internal psychological processes, and market competition within the SOR framework, advancing our knowledge in this field.

Six Major Shifts and Implications of the Video Distribution Ecosystem in the Era of N-screen and OTT Services: A case of US media industry (N-/멀티스크린 및 OTT 서비스시대의 미디어 생태계 변환의 여섯 가지 특징과 함의: 미국 사례)

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide an answer for the following question: What are the major shifts and implications of the unprecedently competitive and rapidly changing media ecosystem in the era of N-screen and OTT services? I've attempted to understand the complex and competitive nexus among media from an historical context by focusing on the displacement vs. complement thesis. The TPC model by Han has been employed for the analysis of the current dynamics of US media industries by triangulating three areas: Technology/industry, public policy and consumer/culture. More specifically, the US media landscape is initially divided into two competitive turfs - the competitors equipped with OTT services and the legacy media industry, and then the traditional media industry was grouped again into PayTV group(telecom service providers with IPTV and mobile TV, cable/Satellite TV networks) and Free (over-the-air) TV networks. Six major shifts were identified by the analysis: power shift in telecom carriers, power shifts in TV industry, Telecom/OTT partnership, time shifts, place shifts, and finally business model shifts.
