  • This study examined patterns of parenting variables in relation to children's peer competence. The subjects were 333 5- and 6-year-old children in early childhood settings. Classroom teachers rated each children's peer competence, and mothers responded to questionnaires on parenting goals, parenting behaviors, and management strategies pertaining to peer relations. Mothers' warm and encouraging behavior, mediation-supervision strategies, and parenting goals for peer competence were positively related to children's peer competence; that is, high warmth and encouragement and mediation-supervision of mothers was strongly associated with children's peer competence. Mothers high in parenting goals for peer competence used more management strategies to enhance peer relations which in turn contributed to children's peer competence.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the association of factors related to clinical practice training for clinical competence among nursing students, and to analyze those factors influencing clinical competence, providing recommendations for improving their clinical competence and clinical learning environment. This descriptive correlative study completed organized questionnaires from 557 nursing students. The data was analyzed by SPSS 19.0. The most important factor affecting the clinical competence among nursing students was teaching effectiveness (${\beta}=.22$). followed by critical thinking (${\beta}=.19$). and the professional self-concept (${\beta}=.19$). The explained variable for clinical competence was 45.2% in nursing students. Thus, the development of an effective clinical internship program is important for strengthening nursing students' clinical competence. We suggest that the capability of nursing students should be strengthened and effective clinical internship programs should be developed to improve the clinical competence of nursing students.

A survey was administered to 233 children of elementary school age(5th-6th grades) in G-city, Korea, using the IPPA-R, the Social Competence Inventory and an Emotion Regulation Scale. The collected data were then analyzed using a Canonical Correlation Analysis. First, the relationship between attachment and social competence was analyzed. The results showed that attachment and social competence have a positively correlated relationship. Peer attachments strongly affect the attributes of social competence when using a canonical variate analysis. Secondly, the relationship between attachment and emotional regulation was analyzed. The results showed that attachment and emotion regulation are also positively correlated. Maternal attachment particularly strongly affected the attributes of emotion regulation. Thirdly, the relationship between social competence and emotional regulation was analyzed. The results showed that social competence and emotional regulation have a positive relationship.

  • This study was performed to identify the predictability of maternal authority from the perspective of children's social competence and mothers' control behavior. The subjects of this study were 369 children from an elementary school in Mokpo. The results were as follows: 1) There were relationships among children's social competence and maternal control behavior and authority. 2) Children's social competence was explained by the maternal control behavior. Maternal imperative control nagatively effected the sociability among children's social competence. Maternal position control positively effected all the children's social competence. 3) Children's social competence was explained by the maternal authority. All maternal control types changed when maternal authority was included. The change of children's social competence was related due to maternal control plus maternal authority. This result illustrates that maternal authority exhibited a powerful effect on children's social competence.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the relationship between critical thinking disposition and clinical competence among nurses in general hospitals. Methods: This study was a descriptive-correlational study with a convenience sample of 560 nurses from 5 general hospitals. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaires. Critical thinking disposition was measured using the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale for Nursing Students. Clinical competence was measured using the Standardized Nurse Performance Appraisal Tool. Results: The mean score for critical thinking disposition and clinical competence was 3.37 and 4.10 respectively on a 5 point scale. A statistically significant correlation was found between critical thinking disposition and clinical competence. A regression model explained 72.8% of clinical competence. Prudence is the most significant predictor of clinical competence ($R^2=.728$). Conclusion: Study findings suggest that nurses with a higher level of critical thinking disposition would have a higher level of clinical competence. Furthermore, prudence might be the most important predictor of clinical competence. In order to strengthen clinical competence in nurses, the development and enhancement of critical thinking should be emphasized at the college level and nurses should be encouraged to make a clinical decision with greater prudence.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to conduct a concept analysis of cultural nursing competence. Methods: Cultural nursing competence was analyzed using Rodgers' evolutionary concept development method. A literature search using the keywords "cultural nursing competence", "intercultural nursing competence", "cultural nursing", "cultural health nursing", and "cultural competence" was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, and RISS on material published before 2015. Database and bibliographic searches yielded 35 records. Results: Cultural nursing competence comprised cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains. The critical attributes of the concept were sensitivity, equality, and activity. The analysis identified the following dimensions: awareness, openness, and coherence. The consequences of cultural nursing competence were personal satisfaction and social justice. The definition contained competence on both an individual and social level. Conclusion: Cultural competency enhances quality of care by narrowing health disparities and increasing client satisfaction. The concept analysis of cultural nursing competence may offer an acceptable framework which can be used to develop psychometric tools of this concept and provide guidelines in nursing practice.

The current study sought to determine the degree of compassionate competence in oncology nurses, as well as to determine the relationships between compassionate competence, burnout, job stress, turnover intention, degrees of job satisfaction, and organizational commitment in oncology nurses. Materials and Methods: A descriptive correlational study evaluating the relationships between compassionate competence, burnout, job stress, turnover intention, degrees of job satisfaction, and organizational commitment in 419 oncology nurses was conducted between January 30 and February 20, 2015. Results: The average score of compassionate competence for oncology nurses in the current study was higher than for clinical nurses. Conclusions: The correlational analysis between compassionate competence and organizational commitment, burnout, job stress, turnover intention, and degree of job satisfaction revealed a high correlation between compassionate competence and positive job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Conclusions: Compassionate competence was higher in oncology nurses than in nurses investigated in previous studies and positively correlated with work experience. Job satisfaction and organizational commitment in nurses may be improved through compassionate competence enhancement programs that employ a variety of experiences.
