This paper presents a numerical investigation on the structural response of a multi-story building subjected to spreading multi-compartment fires. A recently proposed simple fire model has been used to simulate two spreading multi-compartment fire scenarios in a 10-story steel-framed office building. By assuming simple temperature rising and distribution profiles in the fire exposed structural components (steel beams, steel column and concrete slabs), finite element simulations using a three-dimensional structural model has been carried out to study the failure behavior of the whole structure in two multi-compartment fire conditions and also in a standard fire condition. The structure survived the standard fire but failed in the multi-compartment fire. Whilst more accurate fire models and heat transfer models are needed to better predict the behaviors of structures in realistic fires, the current study based on very simple models has demonstrated the importance and necessity of considering spreadingmulti-compartment fires in fire resistance design of multi-story buildings.
Acoustic modal characteristics are investigated on the passenger compartment and trunk coupled system. One-dimensional theoretical model is proposed and the validity of the model is verified by experiment on a simplified compartment model. The theoretical model identifies the occurrence of a new low frequency compartment mode, which does not exist in the uncoupled passenger compartment. The effect of the hole size on the compartment modes is analytically and experimentally examined.
Every nuclear power plant measured concentrations of tritium in groundwater and surface water around the plants periodically. It was not easy to predict the tritium concentration only with these measurement data in case of various release scenarios. KAERI developed a new approach to find the relationship between the tritium release rate and tritium concentration in the environment. The approach was based upon a dynamic compartment model. In this paper the dynamic compartment model was modified to predict the tritium behavior more accurately. The mechanisms considered for the transfer of tritium between the compartments were evaporation, groundwater flow, infiltration, runoff, and hydrodynamic dispersion. Time dependent source terms of the compartment model were introduced to refine the release scenarios. Also, transfer coefficients between the compartments were obtained using realistic geographical data. In order to illustrate the model various release scenarios were developed, and the change of tritium concentration in groundwater and surface water around the nuclear power plants was estimated.
To analyze the unique aspects of biomolecular processing for monoclonal antibody (MAb) production and secretion, the simple working model based on 3-compartment (endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and extracellular medium) was developed. Based on in vitro MAb assembly experimental results, the kinetic model for MAb assembly in the endoplasmic reticulumn was proposed. The dynamics of MAb assembly and secretion was simulated using methematica program. According to the simulation results, the proposed 3-compartment model provides an efficient means to predict the specific MAb productivity as well as intracompartmental concentrations of MAb in endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and extracellular compartment model. In vivo profiles of MAb intermediates gave good agreements with the simulation profiles predicted by the intracellular compartment model. Furthermore, results of such analysis can help in directing the control strategy for optimum biomolecular processing in a mammalian cell culture system.
Background: Generally, pharmacokinetics (PK) models could be stratified into two models. The compartment PK model uses the concept of simple compartmentalization to describe complex bodies, and the physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model describes the body using multi-compartment networking. Notwithstanding sharing a theoretical background in both models, there was still a lack of knowledge to enhance compatibility in both models. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the compatibility among PBPK, lumping model and compartment PK model with voriconazole PK case study. Methods: The number of compartments and blood flow on each tissue in the PBPK model were modified using the lumping method, considering physiological similarities. The concentration-time profiles and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) parameters were simulated at each model, assuming taken voriconazole oral 400 mg single dose. After that, those mentioned PK parameters were compared. Results: The PK profiles and parameters of voriconazole in the three models were similar that proves their compatibility. The AUC of central compartment in the PBPK and lumping model was within a 2-fold range compared to those in the 2- compartment model. The AUC of non-eliminating tissues compartment in the PBPK model was similar to those in the lumping model. Conclusion: Regarding the compatibility of the three PK models, the utilization of the lumping method was confirmed by suggesting its reliable PK parameters with PBPK and compartment PK models. Further case studies are recommended to confirm our findings.
A numerical reproducibility of the backdraft phenomena in a compartment was investigated. The prediction performance of two combustion models, the mixture fraction and finite chemistry models, were tested for the backdraft phenomena using the FDS code developed by the NIST. The mixture fraction model could not predict the flame propagation in a fuel-air mixture as well as the backdraft phenomena. However, the finite chemistry model predicted the flame propagation in the mixture inside a tube reasonably. In addition, the finite chemistry model predicted well the backdraft phenomena in a compartment qualitatively. The flame propagation inside the compartment, fuel and oxygen distribution and explosive fire ball behavior were well simulated with the finite chemistry model. It showed that the FDS adopted with the finite chemistry model can be an effective simulation tool for the investigation of backdraft in a compartment.
Hydrogen safety is one of important issues for future public usage of hydrogen. When hydrogen is released in a compartment, the occurrence of detonation must be prohibited. In order to evaluate the possibility of DDT (Deflagration to Detonation Transition) in the compartment with the hydrogen release, sigma-lambda criteria which were developed from experimental data are commonly used. But they give a little conservative results because they do not consider the detailed geometrical effect of the compartment. This is the main reason of the need to mechanistic combustion model for evaluation of hydrogen flame propagation and acceleration. In this study, sigma-lambda criteria and combustion model were systematically applied to evaluate a possibility of DDT in a IRWST compartment of APR1400 nuclear power plant during a hypothetical accident. A combustion model in an open source CFD code OpenFOAM has been applied for analyses of hydrogen flame propagation. The model was validated by evaluating the flame acceleration tests conducted in FLAME facility. And it was applied to evaluate the characteristics of a hydrogen flame propagation in the IRWST compartment of APR1400.
Car body resonance often generates severe vibrational and noise problems in vehicle compartment. In this study, vibrational characteristics of 2-D vehicle compartment model is investigated and structural modification is carried out by numerical simulation to shift natural frequencies and to reduce stresses in resonance. To this end, ring models of the compartment are manufactured and analysed by FEA. The results are verified to be in good agreement with those of experimental modal testing. And the results of this study offer efficient strucural modification technique for vibration reduction of real cars.
The purpose of this study was to determine pharmacokinetic parameters of vancomycin using the compartment model dependent and compartment model independent analysis in 6 Korean normal volunteers and 8 ovarian cancer patients. Vancomycin was administered 1.0 g bolus by IV infusion over 60 minutes. The elimination rate constant ($\beta$), volume of distribution (Vd), total body clearance (CLt), and area under the plasma level-time curve (AUC) of vancomycin in normal volunteers using the compartment model dependent analysis were $0.150\pm0.030\;hr^{-1},\;32.9\pm2.81\;L/kg,\;5.36\pm0.63\;L/hr,\;and\;186.5\pm20.5\;{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The $\beta$, Vd, CLt, and AUC of vancomycin in ovarian cancer patients using the compartment model dependent analysis were $0.109\;0.008\;hr^{-1},\;41.5\pm3.01\;L/kg,\;4.58\pm0.57\;L/hr\;and\;218.3\pm22.9\;{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$, respectively. There were significant differences (p<0.05,\;p<0.01) in $\beta$, Vd, CLt, and AUC between normal volunteers and ovarian cancer patients. The elimination rate constant (Kel), CLt, and AUC of vancomycin in normal volunteers using the compartment model independent analysis were $0.152\pm0.022\;hr^{-1},\;5.77\pm0.75\;L/hr,\;and\;173.2\pm22.5;{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$, respectively. The Kel, CLt, and AUC of vancomycin in ovarian cancer patients using the compartment model independent analysis were $0.126\pm0.012\;hr^{-1},\;4.96\pm0.55\;L/hr,\;and\;201.7\pm25.6;{\mu}g/ml{\cdot}hr$, respectively. There were significant differences (p<0.05, p<0.01) in Kel, CLt, and AUC between normal volunteers and ovarian cancer patients. And also, there was significant difference (p<0.05) in Kel of vancomycin in ovarian cancer patients between the compartment model dependent and independen analysis. It is necessary for effective dosage regimen of vancomycin in ovarian cancer patient to use these population parameters.
