  • Though weight manufacturing has in national gross production is decreasing, it has still a decisive role in economic growth of Korea, and foreign competitiveness of manufacturing has a great influence on our whole economy. Therefore, as this study speculates export competitiveness of manufacturing item by item, the results can be used for selection of strategic export-oriented products. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows: first, products that are found as competitive through analysis of trade specialization indexes are plastic, rubber, fabric, home electronic appliances, computers, communication equipment, automobiles and their spare parts. Second, electronic-electric industry such as semi-conduits, communication equipment, home electronics, computers was decided as advantageous through analysis of comparative advantages at present, while paper, print and publishing, and leather industries were classified as comparatively disadvantageous. Its political implications are presented as follows: Private corporations should develop more advanced technology and government should give more support to secure export competitiveness of manufacturing toward America. Governmental policies should be prepared to induce consistent and daring investment to technology-intensive products for export products with high-added value.

  • Piercing or blanking process is widely used to manufacture most of lead frame parts, but it is difficult to analyze the real process by the actual shape through progressive dies. In this paper several stages in progressive punching are modeled by 2D and 3D configurations using $DEFORM^{TM}$ 2D/ 3D code. During the progressive stage some state variables and deformed configurations are analyzed in each model. There are three stages in the process, the deformations at each stage are cumulative. The advantages and disadvantages of these two type modeling are discussed and analyzed. The experiments are performed as a working material copper alloy through manufactured die. Computed results in load by two types are compared to experiments.

  • This paper measures the extent to which South Korea participated in global value chains (GVCs) from 1995 through 2011 and scrutinizes the consequences of such participation on the Korean economy. To this end, the World Input Output Database is utilized to calculate GVC income, GVC employment, and value-added exports created by Korean and foreign industries. Our findings show that Korea radically internationalized its production activities during the sample period, widening the gap between gross exports and value-added exports. We also document that Korea's participation in GVCs has changed the value-added and employment structures in domestic industries in accordance with their comparative advantages while exacerbating the degree of wage inequality.

  • PURPOSES : In this study, the effects of installation of diagonal crosswalks on traffic flow depending on the types of intersections are analyzed. METHODS : Scrambled crosswalks have advantages in the traffic safety. Therefore, a comparative analysis of the overall average delay before and after installation of the scrambled crosswalk was conducted using VISSIM. RESULTS : The overall average delay for the scrambled crosswalk decreased when the traffic volume ratio of the major to the minor street is 1: 6 in 2-by-1 and 3-by-1 types of intersections. The scrambled crosswalk improved efficiency of traffic operation in intersections: higher traffic volume for a major street, lower traffic volume for a minor street, and longer cross-distance for a major street. CONCLUSIONS:This study can be used to determine when a scrambled crosswalk should be installed to improve operational efficiency.

  • Ethylene oxide gas has been used as a cold sterilant for heat-sensitive medical equipments and as a fumigant for food for more than 30 years, and it is used more widely than radiation although radiation sterilization has made significant inroads in recent years. But according to recent studies of toxicities such as mutagenicity, haemolytic effect and possible carcinogenicity of Ethylene oxide (ETO) and its two main reaction products, Ethylene chlorohydrin (ETCH) and Ethylene glycol (ETG), Environmental Protection Agency in U.S.A. has suggested some regulations on residual gas in drug products and medical devices for human use. The mutagenic activity of ETO compared with that of X-ray has an equivalency of 1 ppm/hr for ETO as compared to 20 mrad for X-ray, and one could suggest the present maximum allowable concentration for ETO (50 ppm) should be 400 times lower than the radiation standard (2.5 mrad/hr). Although radiation sterilization has advantages of simplicity of operation and complete reliability, changes of physico-chemical properties with possible formation of toxic substances may occur. It is therefore necessary to make some regulations of our own for residual toxicities orginated from each sterilization method.

  • A cyber shopping mall is a place where consumers acquire product information, and make purchase decisions in the cyber space. Even though it offers many advantages over traditional malls, there are still several limitations to do shopping in an existing cyber mall. One of these limitations is the absence of an efficient shopping aid to compare multiple items from multiple malls. Existing search systems usually support a keyword search with limited conditions. Consumers spend lots of their time to compare multiple alternatives from search results. In this paper, we propose an intelligent product search system. There are two main features in our system. The first one is a full support of comparison shopping with multiple perspectives based on commercial search engines. The second one is an enhancement to the shopping aid based on a new concept of Shopping AssistanT. Our system is implemented in Visual Basic and PERL, and experimental results show a satisfactory performance.

  • Recently the issue of brand equity has emerged as one of the most critical areas for fashion marketing management. Despite strong interest in the subject, there is little evidence of how brand equity is created by marketing mix elements and what their effects are. This study explores the influences of marketing mix elements on the brand equity of apparel products. Based on a literature review, a conceptual model for the quality, design, price, advertisements, and brand leadership on consumer's view on brand equity through brand identification and brand values was formulated and tested. For comparative purposes, two basic casual brands are tested, one is Polo and the other is Giodano. The subjects were Korean .50 college women living in Seoul and Daejeon. Results showed that brand equity of casual brand is affected by quality, brand leadership, design, price, advertisements. Therefore marketers should develop the core element to position its brand strategy to create competitive advantages.

  • Animal shoulder models are important in the investigation of the natural history of various pathologic conditions and for evaluation of the effectiveness of different treatments and biomaterials. The characteristics of animal shoulder models that may be used for rotator cuff related experiments are different with regard to the anatomy, behavioral pattern, advantages and disadvantages in application to each other. The lower primates and all the non-primate species, except the tree kangaroo, were neither functional overhead nor had a true rotator cuff. Utilizing more advanced primates, or perhaps even the tree kangaroo would be ideal and the most relevant to man as they possess a true rotator cuff. However, ethical concerns, costs, and many limitations in obtaining primates generally preclude the use of these animals for such research. Finally we should consider the differences in comparative anatomy and behavioral pattern of each animal model during performance or interpretation of rotator cuff experiments.
