Through these variables, it aims to know the effect of input of resources and activity of patent production on company value. First, the result of regression analysis shows that R&D cost has the positive effect on a patent production and sales promotion cost positively affects on the registration of the trademark. Second, the output of regression analysis indicates that a patent has the positive effect on company value but a trademark has not. • The purpose of this study is to analyze how the relative proportion of retention between real estate for business and investment real estate among the real estate held by corporations has been changed after and before the Financial Crisis as well as whether there has been any difference between KOSPI and KOSDAQ listed companies in terms of their share of the real estate. The increasing pattern of real estate owned by KOSDAQ were similar to the KOSPI companies except for investment properties during the Financial Crisis. The proportion of real estate owned by KOSPI had been lower than that of KOSDAQ companies in both investment and business real estate before the Financial Crisis. However, during the period of the Financial Crisis, the proportion of real estate for business held by KOSPI firms was higher than that of KOSDAQ firms. Furthermore, the portion of investment of real estate owned by KOSPI has remained higher than that of KOSDAQ after the Financial Crisis period and the recent period. Based on the results of this analysis, how the relevance of the change of portion between real estate for business and investment real estate affects management performance will be figured out in the future studies.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop a detection model for companies designated as administrative issue in KOSDAQ market using financial data. Administration issue designates the companies with high potential for delisting, which gives them time to overcome the reasons for the delisting under certain restrictions of the Korean stock market. It acts as an alarm to inform investors and market participants of which companies are likely to be delisted and warns them to make safe investments. Despite this importance, there are relatively few studies on administration issues prediction model in comparison with the lots of studies on bankruptcy prediction model. Therefore, this study develops and verifies the detection model of the companies designated as administrative issue using financial data of KOSDAQ companies. In this study, logistic regression and decision tree are proposed as the data mining models for detecting administrative issues. According to the results of the analysis, the logistic regression model predicted the companies designated as administrative issue using three variables - ROE(Earnings before tax), Cash flows/Shareholder's equity, and Asset turnover ratio, and its overall accuracy was 86% for the validation dataset. The decision tree (Classification and Regression Trees, CART) model applied the classification rules using Cash flows/Total assets and ROA(Net income), and the overall accuracy reached 87%. Implications of the financial indictors selected in our logistic regression and decision tree models are as follows. First, ROE(Earnings before tax) in the logistic detection model shows the profit and loss of the business segment that will continue without including the revenue and expenses of the discontinued business. Therefore, the weakening of the variable means that the competitiveness of the core business is weakened. If a large part of the profits is generated from one-off profit, it is very likely that the deterioration of business management is further intensified. As the ROE of a KOSDAQ company decreases significantly, it is highly likely that the company can be delisted. Second, cash flows to shareholder's equity represents that the firm's ability to generate cash flow under the condition that the financial condition of the subsidiary company is excluded. In other words, the weakening of the management capacity of the parent company, excluding the subsidiary's competence, can be a main reason for the increase of the possibility of administrative issue designation. Third, low asset turnover ratio means that current assets and non-current assets are ineffectively used by corporation, or that asset investment by corporation is excessive. If the asset turnover ratio of a KOSDAQ-listed company decreases, it is necessary to examine in detail corporate activities from various perspectives such as weakening sales or increasing or decreasing inventories of company. Cash flow / total assets, a variable selected by the decision tree detection model, is a key indicator of the company's cash condition and its ability to generate cash from operating activities. Cash flow indicates whether a firm can perform its main activities(maintaining its operating ability, repaying debts, paying dividends and making new investments) without relying on external financial resources. Therefore, if the index of the variable is negative(-), it indicates the possibility that a company has serious problems in business activities. If the cash flow from operating activities of a specific company is smaller than the net profit, it means that the net profit has not been cashed, indicating that there is a serious problem in managing the trade receivables and inventory assets of the company. Therefore, it can be understood that as the cash flows / total assets decrease, the probability of administrative issue designation and the probability of delisting are increased. In summary, the logistic regression-based detection model in this study was found to be affected by the company's financial activities including ROE(Earnings before tax). However, decision tree-based detection model predicts the designation based on the cash flows of the company.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of cash holdings on firm value in export companies. To investigate this effect, we analyzed 5,386 samples drawn from export companies listed in the KOSDAQ from 2011 to 2018. During this period, the International Financial reporting Standards have been employed. The research results are as follows. First, the results of a T-test showed that the level of the firm value of export companies with high levels of cash holdings is significantly higher than that of those with low levels of cash holdings. In addition, the level of the firm value of export companies with higher levels of cash holdings than in the previous year is higher than the level might otherwise be. Furthermore, the effects of cash holdings on firm value are similar to those on return on asset. These results suggested that export companies have little used a way of increasing their debt levels in order to increase cash holdings. Second, the results of a multivariate regression analysis presented that the cash holdings of export companies in listed the KOSDAQ significantly influence their firm value. Moreover, a higher level of cash holdings than in the previous year significantly affect firm value. These results proposed that making higher cash holdings than in the previous year might be useful in enhancing firm value. We found that export companies efforts to increase cash holdings positively influence changes in firm value. We also found that Korean export companies maintain their financial stability by obtaining sufficient liquidity specifically in a high uncertainty era like the recent time. We finally firmed an effort to maintain cash holdings as a reasonable choice for export companies.

  • Purpose - This study examines the determinants of offer price and short-term and long-term performance of small and medium-sized enterprise(SME) IPO stocks listed on the KOSDAQ during the period from July 2007 to December 2016. Design/methodology/approach - The SME IPO samples are classified into three categories of regular listing, technology-based special listing, and listing by merger with special purpose acquisition company(SPAC), whose results are compared each other and compared to the result for the KOSDAQ listing of large firms. Findings - From the point of SME management which attempts to list its company on the KOSDAQ, the listing by merger with SPAC is the most unfavorable, and the underpricing phenomenon of the technology-based special listing is severe in the second place. By contrast, IPO stock investors can earn the largest abnormal return by purchasing the SPAC which succeeds the merger with unlisted firm, and the next abnormal returns are obtained in the order of the IPO stocks of technology-based special listing, regular listing of SMEs, and regular listing of large firms. However, it is interesting to observe that the net buying ratio of individual investors is relatively large for the IPO stocks of regular listing of SMEs and large firms, which exhibit the long-term under-performance. Research implications or Originality - This result implies that the exceptional listing system such as the technology-based special listing or the listing by merger with SPAC cost the SMEs which bypass the complicated procedure of the regular listing.

Financial statements and comments in general and internal transactions were extracted from TS-2000 of the Korea Listed Company Association (KLCA), and data related to stock price was extracted from KISVALUE-III of NICE Information Service Co., Ltd. STATA 12.0 was used as the statistical package for panel analysis. Second, the debt ratio (external finance) had a negative influence on R&D investment. The pharmaceutical company prefers internal funds to external funds due to the asymmetry of information in the loan markets. In other words, this shows why internal finances have a significant influence on R&D investment at pharmaceutical companies.
