Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Klebsiella species isolated from clinically ill companion animals

  • Background: Klebsiella spp. is an important conditional pathogen in humans and animals. However, due to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, the incidence of antimicrobial resistance has increased. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate antimicrobial resistance in strains of Klebsiella strains and the phylogenetic relatedness of extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC)-resistance among Klebsiella strains isolated from clinically ill companion animals. Methods: A total of 336 clinical specimens were collected from animal hospitals. Identification of Klebsiella species, determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations, detection of ESC resistance genes, polymerase chain reaction-based replicon typing of plasmids by conjugation, and multilocus sequence typing were performed. Results: Forty-three Klebsiella strains were isolated and, subsequently, 28 were identified as K. pneumoniae, 11 as K. oxytoca, and 4 as K. aerogenes. Eleven strains were isolated from feces, followed by 10 from ear, 7 from the nasal cavity, 6 from urine, 5 from genitals, and 4 from skin. Klebsiella isolates showed more than 40% resistance to penicillin, cephalosporin, fluoroquinolone, and aminoglycoside. ESCresistance genes, CTX-M groups (CTX-M-3, CTX-M-15, and CTX-M-65), and AmpC (CMY-2 and DHA-1) were most common in the K. pneumoniae strains. Some K. pneumoniae carrying CTX-M or AmpC were transferred via IncFII plasmids. Two sequence types, ST709 and ST307, from K. pneumoniae were most common. Conclusions: In conclusion, this is the first report on the prevalence, ESCresistance genotypes, and sequence types of Klebsiella strains isolated from clinically ill companion animals. The combination of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance by Klebsiella in companion animals suggest that, in clinical veterinary, antibiotic selection should be made carefully and in conjunction with the disease diagnosis.

신호 감지성이 향상된 반려견용 무선 심전도 측정 의복 개발 (Development of Wireless ECG Clothing for Dogs with Improved Signal Detection)

  • This study sought to develop clothing for a companion animal that can provide stable ECG measurements. A pattern for the smart clothing of a companion dog was manufactured using the replica method to select a location and method that best suited the stable measurement of ECG and improved the clothing's fitness. The smart clothing was developed as the following three types: strap type, top type, and combined top and vest type with a detachable wireless ECG monitor. The detection abilities of these were observed using the PQRST rate taken after ECG measurements while the three companion dogs were tested while resting and moving. The results revealed that apart from using an electrode, applying a gel pad is the most effective way to achieve stable ECG measurements, and the central chest region is more reliable than the left armpit for providing steady readings. The combined top and vest type showed the highest average ECG PQRST detection number, meaning that the ECG signal measurement was steady. These results may contribute to the measurement of ECG in smartwear for U-Healthcare to measure other biometric data of a companion dog.

반려동물이 인간에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구: 홍성 의견(義犬) 설화를 중심으로 (A Study on the Effects of Companion Animals on Humans: Based on the Tale of a Righteous Dog in Hongseong)

  • 본 연구는 반려동물이 인간에 미치는 영향을 홍성의견 설화를 중심으로 분석한 연구이다. 이를 위해 논문과 홍성의견 설화를 대상으로 질적연구 방법 가운데 문화기술지 분석과 초점면접집단을 사용하였다. 연구 분석 결과, 반려동물이 인간에 미치는 영향은 정서적, 경제적, 문화 환경적 영향으로 분석되었다. 정서적 영향의 경우, 반려동물을 키우는 사람이 사회정서면에서 더 건강하다는 반려동물효과는 아동청소년을 비롯한 노년층, 사회 취약계층에 이르기까지 다양한 계층에서 긍정적 효과를 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 경제적 측면에서는 펫코노미 시장이 대변하듯 급격한 반려동물산업의 확장과 연관을 지어 SWOT 분석을 시도하였고, 문화 환경적 영향으로는 다양하게 등장하는 문화 캠페인이나 설화 등을 중심으로 분석을 시도하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 통해 본 연구는 반려동물의 문화 기술분석을 처음 시도하였다는 점과 반려동물과 인간과의 공생관계를 특정 지역을 중심으로 분석하여 지역사회 발전의 기여를 촉발한 점, 나아가 개인주의가 극대화될 4차산업혁명 시대에 인간의 삶에 반려동물이 정서적으로 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것이라는 점에 깊이를 더한 연구라는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다고 할 수 있다.

진도개의 체형 - 몸통과 다리 (The Conformation of the Jindo (Canis familiaris), Korean Native Dog - the trunk and limb)

  • 진도개의 기본체형에 관한 지표를 얻기 위해서 진도군에서 실시한 진도개 심사에 합격되어 전자칩이 삽입된 개를 대상으로 체형을 조사했다. 1998년 8월 현재 총 두수의 약 10%인 195마리의 백구와 황구를 선정하여 개의 기본체형을 가장 잘 표현하는 것으로 생각되는 몸통과 다리의 18개 부위를 측정하였다. 측정결과 중에 중요한 것만을 들자면, 먼저 체고는 수캐 50.67 cm, 암캐 47.48 cm로 수캐가 컸으며 모색에 따른 차이는 없었다. 이어 체장은 수캐 52.99 cm, 암캐 50.33 cm로 역시 수캐가 컸으며 모색에 따른 차이는 없었다. 마지막으로 체고 대 체장 비는 수캐 104.70, 암캐 106.08로 성이나 모색에 따른 차이는 없었다. 이 연구의 결과는 진도개의 보존 및 육성 방향의 지표로 활용될 수 있음은 물론 진도개의 표준화를 위한 형태학적 연구의 자료로도 이용될 수 있으며 아울러 체형의 주기적인 변화를 확인하는 데에도 중요한 자료가 될 것으로 믿는다.

증강현실 기반 멸종위기종 반려동물 게임 콘텐츠 설계 (Game Content Design for Raising Endangered Species as Companion Animal based on Augmented Reality)

  • 생명존중인식은 '자신과 타인, 동·식물을 소중히 여겨 해치지 않는 마음을 가지며 환경을 보호하는 마음가짐까지 포함하는 넓은 개념'을 의미한다. 선행 연구를 통해 반려동물과 생명존중인식 사이의 관계에 대해 고찰하였다. 본 연구에서는 증강 현실에서의 가상 반려동물과의 상호작용 게임 콘텐츠를 개발하여 생명존중인식 개선 효과가 나타나는지 조사 분석하였다. 이를 위해 멸종위기종인 판다 사육사의 일과를 참고하여 6가지 콘텐츠를 개발하였다. 실험 결과 가상 반려동물과의 상호작용에도 생명존중인식 효과가 유사하게 적용되고 있음을 확인하였고 이를 통해 멸종위기종을 반려동물로 키우고 싶은 사용자의 니즈도 충족시킬 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

Challenges of stem cell therapies in companion animal practice

  • Regenerative medicine using stem cells from various sources are emerging treatment modality in several refractory diseases in veterinary medicine. It is well-known that stem cells can differentiate into specific cell types, self-renew, and regenerate. In addition, the unique immunomodulatory effects of stem cells have made stem cell transplantation a promising option for treating a wide range of disease and injuries. Recently, the medical demands for companion animals have been rapidly increasing, and certain disease conditions require alternative treatment options. In this review, we focused on stem cell application research in companion animals including experimental models, case reports and clinical trials in dogs and cats. The clinical studies and therapeutic protocols were categorized, evaluated and summarized according to the organ systems involved. The results indicate that evidence for the effectiveness of cell-based treatment in specific diseases or organ systems is not yet conclusive. Nonetheless, stem cell therapy may be a realistic treatment option in the near future, therefore, considerable efforts are needed to find optimized cell sources, cell numbers and delivery methods in order to standardize treatment methods and evaluation processes.

Investigation of candidated genes for molecular characterization of DongGyeong dog populations (Gyeongju)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characters of short-tailed dogs (DongGyeong dogs) with anatomical insights, molecular genetics in Gyeongju. The present study was conducted to further characterize of short-tailed dog population in Gyeongju. The short-tailed dog was analyzed in the distribution of 55 individual. The anatomical insights were by x-ray. For discovery of specific genes expressions were measured by Hot-start PCR analysis. Anatomy survey, the number of vertebral typical consists of more than 20. 88.9% of short-tailed dog populations consists of 3-8 vertebrates. The 54 individuals of the 47 observe the vestigial tailed of the sacrum. No detected sacrococcygeal vertebrae degradation individuals were malformation defects. The 3 genes were DEGs (differentially expressed genes) in Dong-Gyeong dogs. We succeeded in finding 3 novel DongGyeong dogs specific genes by using Hot-start PCR analysis, this study suggests that these novel genes may play role (s) in DongGyeong dogs.

여러 제형의 발효홍국 어성초를 오리사료첨가제로 적용한 현장연구에서 오리축산경영의 경제성 평가 (Economic Evaluation of Duck Livestock Management in Utilizing of Various Forms of Houttuynia cordata With Fermented Red Koji as Feed Additives in a Field Study)

  • The influence of various forms of Houttuynia cordata with fermented red koji as feed additives on the performance of duck livestock was evaluated through a field study. Two hundred and forty ducks (Pekins) aged 0-38 d were used. They were randomly assigned to four treatment groups (0%, 1% H. cordata powder with fermented red koji, 1% H. cordata pelleted with fermented red koji, and 1% H. cordata coated with fermented red koji) with four replicates (15 ducks per replication). Foreconomic evaluation, the data (a total of 240 duck) obtained from each treatment were applied to 10,000 ducks per treatment 38-d after the feeding trial. Overall, the results of economic evaluation were the highest in the treatment with 1% H. cordata coated with fermented red koji, followed by 1% H. cordatapelleted with fermented red koji, 1% H. cordatapowder with fermented red koji, and control. In conclusion, using 1% H. cordatawith fermented red koji as coating and pellet type duck diets might be of economic advantage for sustainable environmental management.

경주지방의 무미 또는 단미 형태의 개(경주개 동경이)의 혈청 단백질의 분획에 대환 실태조사 (Investigation of serum protein electrophoresis fractions analysis in Gyeongju DongGyeong dogs)

  • Serum proteins of Korean native dogs (Gyeongju DongGyeong dogs) was analyzed by capillary electrophoresis system. Electrophoretic patterns showed six fractions. Total serum protein and ratio of albumin to globulin were $5.99{\pm}0.83$ (g/dl) and $1.41{\pm}0.29$ (g/dl) in DongGyeong dogs. Relative percentages of total serum albumin and $\alpha-1$, $\alpha-2$, $\beta-1$, $\beta-2$, $\gamma$-globulin fraction were $57.94{\pm}5.43$, $3.15{\pm}2.30$, $7.49{\pm}4.09$, $9.43{\pm}3.50$, $7.63{\pm}5.70$, and $14.36{\pm}7.63$, respectively. It was observed that $\beta$-globulin was higher than other fractions. The most striking alternation with age was founded in the $\gamma$-fractions. Also, it was observed that ratios of albumin to globulin in DongGyeong dogs were higher than on other dogs.
