  • Community nutritionists draw upon theories from the social sciences to improve their work in health promotion and disease prevention. Social science theories are sets of concepts that provide systematic explanations that can predict events or situations, and are classified into several paradigms and worldviews. these theories interact with research and practice around the subject matter of community nutrition. Use of these theories provides benefits in community nutrition by helping to organize thinking about nutrition topics in ways that are useful for assessing , understanding, intervening, and evaluation community nutrition issues. Community nutrition researchers and practitioners can be choose from many available social science theories by evaluating assumptions, scope, applicability, complexity, effectiveness, and other aspects of the theories. Awareness and use of social science theories should enhance the development of community nutrition. (Korean J Community Nutrition2(5) : 671-679, 1997)

  • The National Health Promotion Act passed in 1995 was a milestone for initiating a national and local health promotion program in Korea. And since then local governments and health centers have been developing and providing health promotion programs for the community population. To apply the effectiveness of community health promotion program, it is important to understand the key issue related to health education and the role of health education personnel. The purpose of this study was to define the responsibility and competency of health education specialist, and to develop the activity areas of health promotion program in Korea. Those who provide the service for health promotion and health education should be properly qualified and professionally trained. However, the skills and responsibilities of those who are in charge of providing health education program have not yet been clearly defined in Korea because the areas of health promotion and health education are composed of multi-academic fields. In case of United States, health education specialist is being developed through professional preparation in colleges and graduate schools, and certified through the examination. Also health education specialist is in charge of the planing, implementing and evaluation of health education program in school, hospital, health center, workplace and health food company. Therefore it is important to develop the programs to train and certify health education specialist. Also to extend the activity areas, the government should support continuously program development for health promotion and health education personnel.

Methods: Data were collected by a mail questionnaire from September 20, 2012 to December 20, 2012. Among 253, a total of 161 responded, constituting a 63.3% return rate. Results: Primary staff of diabetes education was the nurse and respondents recognized their role largely as a director. More than half of respondents provided education to people with type 2 diabetes by group. Most common service offered was nutrition therapy and the majority of respondents used printed materials. Among 4 criteria of outcomes, eating (nutrition), knowledge scores, blood pressure, and patients' survey on satisfaction were collected most frequently. Nearly three quarters of respondents were not participated in activities for quality improvement and outcomes were not reported properly. Conclusions: The results are able to draw ideas for organizing diabetes education programs and evaluating outcomes in community heath centers. This article has significance that it is the first comprehensive survey of diabetes education practice in community health centers and provides a baseline for establishing national standards of diabetes self-management education.

The data were collected from May 18th to 21st, 2004 with a self-administered questionnaire, using frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS 10.0 win. Results: 1) The mean score of health promotion behavior by general characteristics was significant in educational status of mother (F=5.352, p=0.005), living standard (F=9.646, p=0.000) and perceived health status (F=8.349, p=0.000). 2) The mean score of family functioning was 3.57 (5 point scale), self-concept was 3.47 (5 point scale) and health promotion behavior was 3.67 (5 point scale). 3) In the relationship between family functioning and self-concept was correlated (r=.547), family functioning and health promotion behavior was correlated (r=.518) and self-concept and health promotion behavior was correlated (r=.670). 4) The most influencing variable was self-concept, accounting for 43% in stepwise multiple regression. A combination of self-concept, family functioning and perceived health status explained 47% of the variance for health promoting behavior. Conclusion: Considering the results above, we can recognize that there are close relations among the family functioning, self-concept and health promotion behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to elevate the level of self-concept and family functioning in order to get health promotion behavior of the elementary school students.
