  • Objectives: Residents of a single room occupancy (Jjok-bang) in Seoul are at high risk of having mental health issues. The majority of residents live in single households with past traumatic experiences including self-deprivation and social exclusion. This study was to investigate the association between mental health and socio-ecological factors at the intrapersonal and community levels. Methods: We conducted face-to-face surveys in Dongja-dong Jjok-bang area in June, 2014. Of 78 participants, 76% were male and the mean age was 60 years (SD=11.53). A multiple regression was used to analyze the association among depression, a sense of well-being, socio-ecological factors, and perceived empowerment and community solidarity. Results: Perceived empowerment (${\beta}=0.83$; 95% CI=0.40, 1.26) and community solidarity (${\beta}=0.52$; 95% CI=0.04, 1.01) were positively associated with a sense of well-being. Participants with empowerment (${\beta}=-2.55$; 95% CI=-4.86, -0.23) and those with community solidarity (${\beta}=-2.36$; 95% CI=-4.94, 0.21) were negatively associated with being depressed. Conclusion: Mental health of the residents in Jjok-bang was more influenced by empowerment and community solidarity than socio-demographic factors. It is necessary to improve public health infrastructures that can enable the residents to enhance empowerment and community solidarity utilizing socio-ecological perspectives.

  • Objectives: The workplace is an ideal place for encouraging health-promoting behaviors. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of an empowerment program on the health-promoting behaviors of women workers. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted with 80 women workers employed at a food packaging facility in 2020. The subjects were selected using convenience sampling and were classified into intervention and control groups using block randomization. An empowerment program for women workers was conducted across 6 sessions based on an empowerment model. Data collection tools included a demographic questionnaire and the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II, which participants completed both before the program and 8 weeks after the last session. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 16 using descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. Results: There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in various health-promoting behaviors before the program. However, the intervention group's scores for nutrition (34.92±1.09 vs. 27.87±4.23), physical activity (24.40±2.94 vs. 17.40±5.03), stress management (26.35±2.60 vs. 23.05±4.27), spiritual growth (34.02±3.00 vs. 30.22±5.40), interpersonal relationships (30.82±2.38 vs. 27.60±4.61), and health responsibility (31.60±2.71 vs. 28.22±4.59) were significantly higher than the control group's 8 weeks after the program had ended. Moreover, there was a significant difference in the total score of health-promoting behaviors for the intervention group compared to the control group (179.00±9.22 vs. 151.42±20.25, p=0.001). Conclusions: An empowerment program for women workers led to significant improvements in the health-promoting behaviors of the participants. Similar programs can ultimately improve women's health in the workplace.

  • The Korean government has promoted rural development projects aimed at bridging the gap between cities and rural areas. However, prior research in assessing available rural projects was mainly focused on only part of the agricultural area, evaluation of project types and improvement measures, analysis of operating management policies, and measuring levels of importance by sub-project categories, and yet the study found a little study on residents' satisfaction of the project who is the direct and fundamental beneficiary. In particular, comparative studies on rural and fishing village residents were insufficient. Thus, the present study chose village residents from Chodo-ri where the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries held the Customized Capacity Empowerment Project from the Gangwon Fishing Village Specialized Support Center and Songgye-ri where was the project area for rural revitalization project to navigate changes on both perception and satisfaction of the village residents before and after the education.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between self-empowerment and a health promoting lifestyle in climacteric women, and to provide the basic data for health promoting intervention. The subjects were 246 women who visited the sports center in Taegu, Korea and ranged in age from 40 to 59. The data was collected during the period from December 2nd to December 15th, 2001. The instruments were the revised health promoting lifestyle scale developed by Park, In Suk(1997) Originally the instruments were developed by Spreitzer(1995) and Jung Hea Joo(1998), who translated it into Korean. The data was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Mean score of total empowerment was 3.76 and the subcategory 'meaning', had the highest score at 4.08. 2.Mean score of total health promoting lifestyle was 2.83 and in the subcategory, the highest degree of performance was 'sanitary life', followed by 'harmonious relationships' and 'self actualization'. The lowest degree was 'professional health management'. 3. A significant statistical difference between age, education and self-empowerment was found. 4. A significant statistical difference between age, marital status, leisure time activity (hobbies/community service) and a health promoting lifestyle was found. 5. Health promoting lifestyle was positively related to self-empowerment(r=.4592). A health promoting lifestyle was the highest positively related to the subcategory 'impact' (r=.4329). 6. The most important variable affecting the health promoting life style was impact which accounted for 19% of the total variance in stepwise multiple regression analysed. Five variables, impact, age, meaning, marital status and leisure time activity(hobbies/community service) accounted for 26% in promoting a healthy life style. From the results of the study, the following recommendations are presented : 1) Adopting the concept of self-empowerment is required in broad nursing fields. 2) Using and making a self-empowerment promoting program which can cause positive effects on a health promoting lifestyle are required. 3) It is required to check the rank of the subcategories such as meaning, competence, self determination and impact according to the subjects. 4) It is required to check the effects of all variances of self-empowerment, self-efficacy and self-esteem variances through the repeated studies.

  • Objectives: his study was performed to examine whether a community organization strategy had been driven by core values explicit in Ottawa Charter and to give some suggestions for using values in health promotion practice in Korea. Methods: We searched literature online with key words of 'values', 'health promotion', and/or 'Ottawa Charter', etc, and reviewed published papers on design, implementation, and evaluation of Health Plus Happiness Plus Projects in Gyeongsangnam-Do, a community organization strategy. Results: Evident core values since Ottawa Charter had been holistic definition of health, empowerment, community participation, addressing the impact of broader determinants of health, reducing social inequities and injustice, and intersectoral collaboration. A community organization strategy was good at realization of most values. Some ways for value-driven health promotion practice were suggested. Conclusions: More discussion and debate on values in health promotion are needed in Korea.

  • Purpose: This study developed an instrument to evaluate the health empowerment of North Korean women refugees and examined its validity and reliability. Methods: Through literature review and focused group interviews, 66 preliminary items with three constructs, including perceived control, perceived competence, and goal internalization were selected based on Menon's psychological health empowerment model. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 239 North Korean women refugees in the community from August 31 to September 4, 2020. Content, construct, convergent, and discriminative validity were evaluated. Cronbach's α was used to evaluate the reliability of scale. Results: The final instrument consisted of 31 items with three factors that were identified through confirmatory factor analysis. The convergent validity showed that the correlation coefficient was .52 (p < .001), which confirmed the validity of the developed measurement tool. Cronbach's α for all the items was .94, and Cronbach's α for the factors was .76~.91. Conclusion: This health empowerment scale has been developed to include aspects of health empowerment, provide a conceptual framework, and offer objective indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of a health education program.
