  • Studies on community annoyance caused by transportation noise exposure were carried out in fifty-one areas around Gimpo and Gimhae international airports, Gyungbu and Honam railway lines and east and riverside-northen motorway to accumulate social survey data and to assess the relationship between each transportation noise level and degree of annoyance in Korea. The measurements of transpotation noise were carried out using portable precision sound level meters (B&K type 2238 and LD 812) except in aircraft noise. Aircraft noise levels were measured automatically by airport noise monitoring system, B&K type 35n Social surveys were carried out to people living around noise measurement points. Questionnaires were only aggregated by face-to-face interviews using various questions concerned with demographic factors, degree of noise annoyance, interference with daily activities and health-related symptoms. The questions of noise annoyance were answered on an 11-point numerical scale. The respondents, from 18 to 70 years of age, were randomly selected and completed the questionnaire for themselves. The total number of respondents for the questionnaires was 1,839. The results showed that community annoyance of railway noise in Korea is similar to that in Japan, but is more severe than that in European countries.

  • Studies of community annoyance caused by civil aircraft noise exposure were carried out in fifteen areas near Gimpo and Gimhae international airports, Korea, to accumulate social survey data in Korea and to assess the relationship between aircraft noise level and degree of annoyance. Aircraft noise levels were measured automatically by airport noise monitoring system, B&K type 3597. A social survey was carried out people living within In meters of noise measurement points, as a rule. Questionnaires were only aggregated face-to-face interviews using various questions which concerned with demographic, degree of noise annoyance, interference with daily activities and health-related symptoms. The questions of noise annoyance were answered on an 11-point numerical scale. The respondents, from 18 to 70 years of age, were randomly selected and completed the questionnaire themselves. The total number of respondents for the questionnaires was 554.

  • This study examine the annoyance of transportation noise exposure and found the survey method about which noise induces more disturbance or annoyance when more than two kinds of noise exist. This study describes the noise annoyance survey performed in the vicinity of Sin-wol interchange. This residential area was exposed to aircraft noise and traffic noise simultaneously and aircraft noise exposure of this area is about 81 WECPNL, traffic noise exposure is about 81.2 dB(A) nearby road. Noise sources are grouped into three part, traffic noise, aircraft noise and community noise. The questionnaire includes how often, how loud each noise is heard. Also this deals with comparative annoyance reaction from specific noise sources such as aircraft or traffic and its disturbance of daily activities. Facade noise mapping are executed by using a commercial noise mapping software.

  • Valid evaluation of community reaction to road-traffic noise exposure is important for the policy making and quality of life. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between community reaction and nighttime road-traffic noise. The study measured nighttime roadside noise caused by high traffic which is greater than LAeq(22:00-07:00) 65dB(A) and lower than 65dB(A) at Chonju city, from March to April, 2003. Three hundred sixty seven subjects, aged from 20 to 65, were selected from those who are residing close to the major roads. They were asked to answer the questions regarding noise source, stress(PWI-SF), annoyance, disturbance of specific activity, disturbance of sleep, somatic symptom, and four suggested confounding factors. The relationship between annoyance, somatic symptom and noise exposure was not significant. Adjusted odds ratio(95% C.I.) for disturbance of communication and disturbance of attention and rest were 1.59(1.03-2.71), 1.64(1.06-2.81), respectively. On the other hand sleep disturbance was indicated as 1.34(0.77-2.32). The results suggested that federal policy-making about road-traffic noise should consider community reaction evaluated by various perspective including annoyance, disturbance of specific activity, disturbance of sleep, and confounding factors.

  • Recently a number of social surveys on community response to environmental noises have been conducted to summarize response relationship obtained from different areas. Some problems have been pointed out in comparing the result of surveys using verbal scales with different number of categories. ICBEN (International Commission on Biological Environment of Noise) Team 6 planned a international joint study and constructed comparable standardized noise annoyance scales using the same method. In Korea the survey was conducted in four areas such as Seoul, Taejon, Taegu, Kwangju. About 100 subjects participated in each area approximately. Finally five verbal annoyance were constructed as follows; 1 (Jeonhyu), 2 (Jokm), 3 (Bikyojerk), 4 (Ajoo), 5 (Umcheongnage).

  • Relationship between exposure to combined noise sources and community annoyance have been investigated. Social surveys were conducted in urban spaces near the construction site with road traffics. The question relating to noise annoyance was answered on an 11-point numerical scale and 5-point verbal scale according to ISO 15666. The questionnaire also contained demographic factors, interference with daily activities, health-related symptoms, and noise sensitivity. Noise levels were measured in terms of A-weighted equivalent level ($L_{Aeq}$), and noise mapping technique was applied to predict the noise levels of urban spaces. Synthesis curves for the relationship between noise levels and percentage highly annoyed for combined noise sources were derived, and compared to the curves from a single noise source.

  • For the purpose of finding if aircraft noise annoyance response is affected to variables when noise survey is performed, the questionnaire survey is conducted around the Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, Republic of Korea. This residential area is exposed to the aircraft noise and road traffic noise, simultaneously. Research areas are classified according to three different aircraft noise exposure levels expressed in WECPNL, under 75, between 75 and 80, and above 80 WECPNL, on aircraft noise map. The 7-step numerical magnitude with verbal category scales is used to measure the annoyance level. This surrey suggests that aircraft noise annoyance is not affected to an important extent by other noise sources (road traffic noise, community noise) and demographic variables (sex, age, education, occupation, dwelling type, length of residence). Aircraft noise annoyance would be related to complaint activity which is one of attitudinal variables.
