  • This study focuses on systematic structure of factors, which affect commercialization of ocean science and technology (OST), applying both grounded theory methodology (GTM) and semantic network analysis methodology (SNAM) by using in-depth interviews with 8 specialists previously experienced in the same field. This study further focuses on clarification of the distinctiveness and universality of commercialization factors on OST by comparatively analyzing on the commercialization factors of general sciences and technologies. Using SNAM, it was determined that commercialization success required connected support system, government support, technology marketing, technology power and characteristics of commercialized entities, which were identified as dominant factors. GTM presented an outcome that connected support systems among participants in commercialization and found that research institute strategies are significant factors in the core phenomenon of commercialization, while technology marketing, technology power and market-oriented technology are important conditions. In addition, the factors of technology, market, connection of participants and government support of commercialized entities are shown as equally important factors for commercialization of ocean science and technology. Secondly, SNAM results indicate that ocean science characteristics depend on a network of government support, research institute strategy, organization and manpower, capital power, and technology marketing, as these ocean science characteristics have been identified as significant factors in the GTM study. It has been determined that technology, market and government support should be connected in order for commercialization of ocean science and technology (OST). Moreover, commercialization methods, applied to the marketing of commercialization of ocean science and technology is differentiated from others since commercialization success is more relevant to these factors.

  • This paper investigates the success and failure factors of technology commercialization for SMEs developing public sector technologies. The 2014 Korea Technology Transfer Commercialization Status Report states that only 30% of the technologies that are transferred are being used and the rest are neglected. The objective of this paper is to determine the relationship between quantitative variables and the success rate of technology commercialization of 1,222 SMEs in Korea by using three analyzes (cross tabulation, process and logistic) methodologies to increase the success of public technology commercialization. The outcome shows that the number of successful technology deployment cases and the number of IPR registration cases have a positive impact on the success rate of public technology commercialization. The statistical outcome also verifies that unnecessary technology development, more attempts and failures of technology development, and longer lead time in the planning phase have a negative impact on the success rate of the public technology development and commercialization. For policy implications, the government should be selective in supporting public technology commercialization and development for SMEs as not all technology attempts exert positive effects.

  • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) have been of great interest particularly in the automobile industries because of their high energy density and low pollutant emission. However, some of the issues such as, the necessarily high contents of Pt catalysts and their slow kinetics of cathode oxygen reduction reaction remain as obstacles in the commercialization of the PEMFC. In this presentation, after brief explanation on basic principles of PEMFC and its application to FC vehicles, recent researches to improve the activity and durability of Pt-based nano catalysts toward oxygen reduction will be introduced. It covers size and shape control of Pt nano particle, binary and ternary Pt-M alloys, novel core-shell nano structures of Pt, and a little bit about non-Pt catalysts. Strategies and methodologies for design and synthesis of novel catalysts will also be included.

  • Recently, it is very important to create economic value as well as develop core algorithms and technologies in the field of R&D. Various R&D projects make an effort to do the technology commercialization of their results and, as part of efforts, many studies on business model(BM) are conducted to create economic benefits in using the developed technology. However, it is difficult to use the general business model methodologies, which are usually utilized for companies, to the government's research due to different processes and characteristics between them. And for the practical application of business models, it needs to systematize conceptual business models in technical perspective through technical architecture analysis. In this study, a business model development process and a technical architecture analysis for national R&D project is developed for the technology commercialization. In addition, the process is applied to Korean Land Spatialization Program (KLSP) organized by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs to verify the feasibility of its practical application.

  • As ubiquitous computing technology is proliferating, a wider range of u-services applying ubiquitous computing technology has been implemented and some of the u-services have been actively considered for commercialization. Accordingly, establishing corresponding business models based on u-services also have been increased. However, structured methodologies to build u-service business models are still in its very early age. Moreover, since most of the legacy business model formulation and analysis methodologies have stressed on conventional or digital services, not u-services. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to propose a structured methodology of formulating and analyzing business models for u-services. An illustrative example is described to show the feasibility of the proposed methodology. To do so, Business Model Diagram (BMD), which adopts model components for u-services, is newly developed.

  • Low-Temperature-cofired ceramics (LTCC) antenna packages have been extensively researched and utilized in recent years due to its excellent electrical properties and ease of implementing dense package integration topologies. This paper introduces some of the key research and development activities using LTCC packaging solutions for 60 GHz antennas at Samsung Electronics [1]. The LTCC 60 GHz antenna element topology is presented and its measured results are illustrated. However, despite its excellent performance, the high cost issues incurred with LTCC at millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies for antenna packages remains one of the key impediments to mass market commercialization of mmWave antennas. To address this matter, for the first time to the author's best knowledge this paper alleviates the high cost of mmWave antenna packaging by devising a novel, broadband antenna package that is wholly based on low-cost, high volume FR4 Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The electrical properties of the FR4 substrate are first characterized to examine its feasibility at 60 GHz. Afterwards a compact multi-layer antenna package which exhibits more than 9 GHz measured bandwidth ($S_{11}{\leq}-10$ dB) from 57~66 GHz is devised. The measured normalized far-field radiation patterns and radiation efficiency are also presented and discussed.

  • Although fuel cell systems have advantages in terms of electric efficiency and environmental impact compared with conventional power systems, fuel cell systems have not been deployed widely due to their low reliability and high price. In order to guarantee the lifetime of 10 years, which is the commercialization goal of Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), it is necessary to improve durability and reliability through optimized operation and maintenance technologies. Due to the complexity of components and their degradation phenomena, it's not easy to develop and apply the diagnose and prognostic methodologies for PEFCs. The purpose of the paper is to show the current state on PEFC prognostic technology for condition based maintenance. For the prognostic of PEFCs, the model driven method, the data-driven, and the hybrid method can be applied. The methods reviewed in this paper can contribute to the development of technologies to reduce the life cycle cost of fuel cells and increase the reliability through prognostics-based health management system.

  • A technology in development called CACD (Computer Aided Clothing Design) can reproduce fashion shows by utilizing computers, and is of particular interest. Considering the growth potential of this area, the purpose of this study is to present the development potentials that CACD technology will bring to the fashion area and to promote the diversity of the fashion industry. This will be realized by identifying the current status of CACD and its reach in the field of Fashion, followed by an in-depth analysis of its application. The methodologies employed in this study are as follows; in-depth study of related literature, field research of business firms, and investigation on Internet data. For the systematic advance of CACD, the development of user-friendly programs for 3D clothing design is of the utmost priority. The four technologies that should be intensively developed to enhance the development of the clothing industry through the utilization and commercialization of CACD are as follows; First, technology capable of performing accurate three-dimension measurement of the human body is needed. Second, technology which realizes automatic pattern formation is needed. Third, the nature physical properties of the material and textile design when applied to pre-formed patterns must be expressed similarly to the real thing. Last of all, an integrative technology which can conduct fast and accurate clothing simulations must be developed.
