  • Separation of soluble oil was investigated during filtration of cutting oil emulsion using various commercial ultrafiltration membranes. The surface properties of membranes used were hydrophilic hydrophobic and modified surfaces by various surfactant pretreatments. Conditions varied include stirring speed transmeembrane pressure membrane type and surfactant type for pretreatment. The results give some indication of mechanisms occurring at the membrane surface. Surfactant pretreatments significantly improved water flux and UF flux of hydrophilic regenerated cellulose(up to 2.4x for YM100) and hydrophobic polysulfone (up to 2.2x for PTHK) membranes depending on surfactant type and operating conditions. The UF flux enhancement was attributed to membrane swelling and reduction of interfacial surface tension between oil droplets and membrane surface. unexpectedly the hydrophilic membranes revealed greater flux enhancement than the hydrophobic membranes. The results also showed a greater improvement in UF flux at lower operating pressure.

  • Total tocopherol and phenol contents were determined for virgin and pure oilve oil, and their autoxidation and thermal oxidation were compared with those of commercial soybean oil, in the presence or absence of fluorescent light. The total tocopherol contents of virgin, pure olive oil, and soybean oil were 15.7, 11.2, and 80.7 mg/100 g, respectively. Their total phenol contents were 10.4, 1.6 and 0.5 mg/l00 g, respectively. In autoxidation under dark place at 45$^{\circ}C$, the oxidative stability of the substrate oils decreased in order of virgin oilve oil, pure olive oil, and soybean oil. The average temperature coefficients of the virgin, pure olive oil and soybean oil in the range of 45∼$65^{\circ}C$ were 1.73, 1.83 and 1.64, and the activation energies were 26.86, 29.49, and 24.07 KJ/mol, respectively. In temperature range of 45∼$65^{\circ}C$, pure olive oil was the most susceptible to temperature change, whereas soybean oil the least. In autoxidation under fluorescent light at 45$^{\circ}C$, the oxidative stability of substrate oils decreased in the order of soybean oil, pure olive oil, and virgin olive oil. In thermal oxidation at 18$0^{\circ}C$, the oxidative stability of substrate oils decreased in order of pure olive oil, virgin olive oil, and soybean oil.

  • This paper is to study on the phenomena that the compound dielectric strength through double layers of air-insulating oil dielectrics is much lower than that of air dielectrics only. the change of the dielectric strength by the variance of air gap depends on the characteristics of air gap discharge and, in case of commercial voltage, the degree of dependance is greeter than in case of direct current voltage.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary mugwort (0, 1, 2, 4%) and sardline oil(1%) on weight gain, pH, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), and meat color in meat-type chickens. Birds were randomly assigned to the four dietary treatments: control (commercial feed), control plus 1% mugwort and sardine oil (T1), 2% mugwort and 1% sardine oil(T2), or 4% mugwort and 1% sardine oil (T3). Birds were sacrificed and meat samples were taken and stored for either 0, 3, 7 or 10 days at $4^{\circ}C$. Weight gain in T3 was lowest than other treatment groups (P<0.05). pH of dietary mugwort and sardine oil treatments increased significantly compared to that of control during storage periods (P<0.05). VBN and TBARS of all treatment groups were significantly increased as storage period extended (P<0.05). Meat color $(L^*,\;b^*)$ significantly increased during storage periods. $L^*\;and\;b^*$ values were higher in treatment groups than in control (P<0.05). These results indicate that the mugwort and fish oil may improve quality and self-life of meat-type chickens during storage.

  • Plant seed oil-bodies or oleosomes ate the repository of the neutral lipid stored in seeds. These organelles in many oilseeds may comprise half of the total cellular volume. Oleosomes are surrounded by a half-unit membrane of phospholipid into which are embedded proteins called oleosins. Oleosins are present at high density on the oil-body surface and after storage proteins comprise the most abundant proteins in oilseeds. Oleosins are specifically targeted and anchored to oil-bodies after co-translation on the ER. It has been shown that the amino-acid sequences responsible for this unique targeting reside primarily in the central hydrophobic tore of the oleosin polypeptide. In addition, a signal-like sequence is found near the junction of the hydrophobic domain and ann N-terminal hydrophilic / amphipathic domain. This "signal" which is uncleaved is also essential for correct targeting. Oil-bodies and their associated oleosins may be recovered by floatation centrifugation of aqueous seed extracts. This simple partitioning step results in a dramatic enrichment for oleosins in the oil-body fraction. In the light of these properties, we reasoned that it would be feasible to create fusion proteins on oil-bodies comprising oleosins and an additional valuable protein of pharmaceutical or industrial interest. It was further postulated that if these proteins were displayed on the outer surface of oil-bodies, it would be possible to release them from the purified oil-bodies using chemical or proteolytic cleavage. This could result in a simple means of recovering high-value protein from seeds at a significant (i.e. commercial) scale. This procedure has been successfully reduced to practice for a wide variety of proteins of therapeutic, industrial and food no. The utillity of the method will be discussed using a blood anticoagulant, hirudin, and industrial enzymes as key examples.

  • Three types of artificial microparticle diets were developed for rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) enrichment. The efficacies of enrichment with the artificial diets were evaluated and compared to those with commercial enrichment diets on the growth and survival of flounder larvae. Total lipid content was highest in the rotifer enriched with oil capsule (40.5% in dry weight). The n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (n-3 HUFA) content was also highest in the rotifer fed with oil capsule (7.08% in dry weight). The flounder larvae fed on the rotifer enriched with oil capsule showed the highest growth compared to those fed on any other enriched rotifer (P<0.05). The survival ratio of flounder larvae fed on the rotifers enriched with oil capsule and emulsion oil were higher than those fed on any other enriched rotifer (P<0.05). From the feeding study, the growth and survival of flounder larvae were enhanced by feeding rotifer enriched with oil capsule compared to rotifer enriched with any other diets. The rotifer fed on oil capsule containing high contents of n-3 HUFA. Therefore, a significant relationship between the growth and survival of flounder larvae and the n-3 HUFA content of rotifer could be obtained.

  • The oxidative stability of the potato chip prepared with canola oil fortified with antioxidnats was studied to explore the possibility of substituting it for imported frying fats and oils. BHT, BHA, TBHQ and silicone were added to the oil at a level of 0.02% and 10 ppm, respectively. Potato chip samples were prepared in a commercial scale and stored at $25.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ for 5 months. The oxidative stability of the extracted oils from potato chips during storage was estimated on the basis of some their physico-chemical changes, such as acid values, peroxide values, iodine values, ansidine values, fatty acid composition of the oils. An organoleptic test for the flavor of the samples was also performed. The oxidative stability of the samlpes was estimated on the basis of the changes of the parameter values. The effectiveness of the antioxidants was in the order of canola oil+TBHQ (0.02%)+silicone (10 ppm) > canola oil+TBHQ (0.02%) > canola oil+BHA (0.02%)+silicone (10 ppm) > canola oil+BHT (0.02%)+silicone (10 ppm) > canola oil+BHA (0.02%) > canola oil+BHT (0.02%) > canola oil. The antioxidant effect of canola oil+TBHQ (0.02%)+silicone (10 ppm) was more salient than any other antioxidant used in the potato chip.

  • A cab roof fairing is a device that reduces the drag coefficient of a commercial vehicle, by controlling the resistance of flow separation occurring in the front when the commercial vehicle travels. Commercial vehicles are designed to facilitate aerodynamic resistance that cannot be avoided from the driving direction of the vehicle, because they must structurally load containers in the rear. For this reason, it is closely related to oil costs and environmental pollutants. In this study, the 3D fairing shape was designed based on the Rankine half body theory, and the design results were verified through aerodynamic analysis.
