  • Commercial and Art movies have different characteristics even when they belong to the same 'movie' category. This study investigated the differential effects of reviewer professionalism and expectation about a movie on the intention to watch the movie. Based on the survey on young potential movie goers, we found that movie types indeed have significant effects. Specifically, in the case of art movie, people had high level of intention to watch when they were exposed to professional reviews. We found that utilitarian expectation mediates between reviewer professionalism and intention to watch for art movie. On the other hand, in the case of commercial movie, people had high level of intention to watch when they were exposed to amateur reviewers. We found that hedonic expectation mediates between reviewer professionalism and intention to watch for art movie. In result, this study contributes to our knowledge to movie industry through showing that reviewer professionalism have different impacts on commercial and art movies.

  • This study focused on whether the existence and type of originals have any effects on box-office performance of the movie. Cultural products have characteristics of experience goods of which consumers hardly know the value of the products before they actually experience the products. To reduce the uncertainty, movie producers may want to use existing contents already made for other type of cultural products, which is generally called of One Source Multi Use. Using 381 Korean box-office data during January 2010 and September 2012, this study found that, first, the existence of original affects positively the movie's box office performance, second, the fiction based original has a positive effect on the movie's box office performance while cartoon and movie/TV based originals do not, and third, the movie type(commercial movie) positively moderates the relationship between fiction based original and movie performance. This study showed that box-office performance is not only affected by the characteristics of the movie itself, but also affected by other conditions including the use of existing originals created for other purposes.

  • The demand prediction is a critical issue for the film industry. As the social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, gains momentum of late, considerable efforts are being dedicated to prediction and analysis of hit movies based on unstructured text data. For prediction of trends found in commercially successful films, the correlations between the amount of data and hit movies may be analyzed by estimating the data variation by period while opinion mining that assigns sentiment polarity score to data may be employed. However, it is not possible to understand why the audience chooses a certain movie or which attribute of a movie is preferred by using such a quantitative approach. This has limited the efforts to identify factors driving a movie's commercial success. In this regard, this study aims to investigate a movie's attributes that reflect the interests of the audience. This would be done by extracting topic keywords that represent the contents of Twits through frequency measurement based on the collected Twitter data while analyzing responses displayed by the audience. The objective is to propose factors driving a movie's commercial success.

  • With the development of technology and the creation of an entertainment environment for leisure, various marketing strategies are being used in the film industry. Among them, the use of the credit cookie of ending credits was very effective in producing the series. The ending credit is the time it takes to show the names of the people who made the movie, which is meaningless to the audience. There is a cost to produce a ending credit but It wasn't made because no revenue was generated. The credit cookie was inserted into this ending credit area, which brought new pleasure to the audience. Most of them were epilogue images showing the story behind the movie, NG images showing the NG situation during film production, and In videos mentioned in the movie but not shown in the movie itself. As various ideas about credit cookie were connected with marketing, a series movie and a spin-off foretelling the derivative works after the screening work were produced and have a new meaning. As a result, the time of ending credits, which had no commercial value, became the methodology of the most powerful promotional strategy. Looking at the difference between live-action film and animation in producing such credit cookie, unlike live-action films that edit the remaining parts after shooting, the NG video of the animation has a lot of time and money to produce. So, it hasn't try very well, and it seems to have been actively produced when moving from 2D animation to 3D animation. This is because 3D animation, which has already been modeled, can create new NG scenes by simply adding animating based on the layout of the created scene. Since it is possible to produce an episode movie at a low cost and time, and to use the scenes of the movie after the production, it will be necessary to strategically produce credit cookie for promotion in animation.

  • Computer Graphics(CG) are very important in the movie industries. Recently, many domestic CG Companies participate in a movie creation. However, most companies only use commercial tools, and do not concentrate on developing techniques. This is why they use the commercial tools in spite of its lack of functions. In this paper, we explain the importance of developing technical tools to complement the shortage of commercial tools through the previewer for fluid simulation. We present how we design and implement the previewer to specialize it for fluid simulation. Finally, we estimate our previewer's performance and discuss with result.

  • This study aims to find out predictors of a movie's eventual box office, focusing on a movie's box office rank on an opening day. For an empirical analysis, I use data of 794 commercial movies released in the Korean theatrical exhibition market during the recent five years(2013~2017). The regression analysis shows that being box office number one on an opening day has statistically significant impact on a movie's final box office. A movie's quality, measured by audience's review, does not give significant impact on top1 movie's final success. Indexes such as increase of showing number on Sunday are strongly related to a movie's economic success. The additional analysis on box office number one movie on an opening day, totally 158 movies, finds that box office growth rate on a second week is strongly related to a movie's final success. Lastly, correlation coefficient of a movie's opening day box office and final box office does not show consistent growth when the coefficient is compared yearly. This study might have meaning in that it proposes new box office predictors and shows the relation of the indexes and a movie's final performance empirically.

  • Interest has increased in academic research regarding key factors that drive box-office success as well as the ability to predict the box-office success of a movie from a commercial perspective. This study analyzed the relationship between key success factors of a movie and box office records based on movies released in 2010 in Korea. At the pre-production investment decision-making stage, the movie genre, motion picture rating, director power, and actor power were statistically significant. At the stage of distribution decision-making process after movie production, among other factors, the influence of star actors, number of screens, power of distributors, and social media turned out to be statistically significant. We verified movie success factors through the application of a Multinomial Logit Model that used the concept of choice probabilities. The Multinomial Logit Model resulted in a higher level of accuracy in predicting box-office success compared to the Artificial Neural Network and Discriminant Analysis.

The following conclusion was deduced through this study. First, in 1920s which becomes the background of this study, the slim shape of Flapper which looks like a young and boy became an ideal figure condition and the straight silhouette with low waist line and the short skirt that rose to knee was popular. Second, as a result of analysing movie costume by classifying it in silhouette, colors, and materials, straight silhouette of low waistline with a near colored - tone seen in the pastel series, including white, beige, pink, and gray was mainly constituted and the metal colors like silver and gold were used. As a material, chiffon, satin, velvet, flower patterned prints, and beads were used, which represented luxurious life of women in the upper classes. Third, as a result of comparing and analysing, it turned out that there was a similarity. However, in dress collection for a heroine, some dissimilarity differentiated from a movie costumes was found out in that the dresses in collection expressed moderate beauty and modernism and elegant beauty at the same time by matching a variety of materials and using black color.
