워터제트 선박추진용 사류펌프의 설계 및 성능해석 (Design and Performance Analysis of Mixed-Flow Pumps for Waterjet Marine Propulsion)

  • The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study, the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses, and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. Newly designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mired-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.

  • Numerical studies have been conducted to predict the solid-liquid separation efficiency of turbulent flow in a hydrocyclone using a commercial CFD code. To validate the CFD code, several preliminary numerical calculations are carried out to determine the influence of parameters such as grid systems, numerical schemes, and turbulence models. The numerical studies have been performed on the hydrocyclones with the different vortex finder geometries by changing the mass flow rate, and the results were compared with the experimental data. The results show that the CFD code can be used as a design tool to improve the performance of hydrocyclones.

CFD를 이용한 쌍축 컨테이너선 주위의 유동계산 (Computation of Flow around a Container Ship with Twin-Skegs using the CFD)

  • In this study. a numerical analysis has been performed for the turbulent flow around a 15,000TEU twin-skeg container ship using a commercial CFD code. FLUENT. The computed results have been compared with the model test data from MOERI. We investigated viscous resistance coefficient. wake distribution and characteristics of the shear flow according to the grid numbers. Although the free surface is approximated by the plane of symmetry in this work. the calculated axial velocity and transverse vector show a good agreement with the MOERI experimental data except for the region of 0.9 level of axial velocity at the propeller plane. The numerical analysis show that commercial CFD code is useful tool for the evaluation of complex hull form with twin-skegs.

  • Over the past 30 years, numerical methods and simulation tools for fluid dynamic problems have advanced as a new discipline, namely, computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Although a wide spectrum of flow regimes are encountered in many areas of science and engineering, simulation of compressible flow has been the major driver for developing computational algorithms and tools. This Is probably due to a large demand for predicting the aerodynamic performance characteristics of flight vehicles, such as commercial, military, and space vehicles. As flow analysis is required to be more accurate and computationally efficient for both commercial and mission-oriented applications (such as those encountered in meteorology, aerospace vehicle development, general fluid engineering and biofluid analysis) CFD tools for engineering become increasingly important for predicting safety, performance and cost. This paper presents the author's perspective on the maturity of CFD, especially from an aerospace engineering point of view.

Experimental and CFD Simulations of Polluted Air Behavior in Rectangular Tunnels

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the flow characteristics of polluted air behavior in rectangular tunnels using a PIV system and a commercial CFD program. The PIV experiments are simulated by using the olive oil as the tracer particles in scaled rectangular tunnels. Each model has one of four different outlet vents, each dimensionless L/H ratio of which is 0, 0.375, 0.75 and 1.125, respectively as the locations of each outlet are away from the vertical centerline through the inlet. A commercial CFD program, ANSYS CFX, was used to examine the velocity fields and the pressure distributions in numerical simulations. The kinematic viscosity of the air flow of $1.51{\times}10^{-5}m^2/s$ and the flow velocity of 0.3 m/s at the inlet are given under the same conditions in order to analyze the polluted air flow characteristics experimentally and computationally. This study is considered to examine the effect of the outlet locations in the naturally ventilated tunnel models.

  • In this study, a cross-flow fan system used in indoor unit of the split-type air conditioner is analyzed by computational simulation. A commercial CFD code - Fluent - is used to calculate the performance and its unsteady flow characteristics. The unsteady incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations are solved using a sliding mesh technique on the interface between rotating fan region and the outside. The acoustic pressure is calculated by using Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings equation. (omitted)

  • Optimal flow-field design of bipolar-plates for a commercial class PEM(polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell stack was carried out on the basis of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation. A three-dimensional CFD model originally developed by Shimpalee et al., has been utilized for performing large-scale simulation of a single fuel cell consisting of bipolar-plates gas diffusion layers, and a membrane-electrode-assembly(MEA). The CFD model is able to predict the current density, pressure drops, gas velocities, vapor and liquid water contents, temperature distributions, etc. inside a single fuel cell. Depending on simulation results from the CFD modeling of a PEM fuel cell, several flow-fields of bipolar-plates were designed and verified. The final design of the bipolar-plate has been chosen from the simulations and experimental tests and showed the best performance as expected from the simulation results under a normal operating condition. Thus, the CFD simulation approach to design the optimal flow-field of the bipolar-plates was successful. The final design was adopted as the best flow-field to build a commercial scale PEM fuel cell stack, the performance of which shows about 42% higher than that of the older bipolar-plate design.

원자로 내부유동 예측을 위한 상용 전산유체역학 소프트웨어 성능 비교 연구 (Comparative Study of Commercial CFD Software Performance for Prediction of Reactor Internal Flow)

  • 전산유체역학 소프트웨어의 일부 개발자 및 사용자는 최신 전산유체역학 소프트웨어가 최소한 단상 원자로 안전문제는 타당하게 해석할 수 있을 것으로 생각하지만 계산 결과에는 여전히 제한성 및 불확실도가 존재한다. 현재 한국원자력안전기술원에서는 규제관점에서 원자로 안전문제에 대한 상용 전산유체역학 소프트웨어의 성능평가를 수행하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 축소 APR+ 원자로 내부유동 해석시다공성 모델을 적용한 상용 전산유체역학 소프트웨어의 예측 성능을 평가하기 위해 ANSYS CFX R.14 및 FLUENT R.14 에 탑재된 수치모델을 이용하여 계산을 수행하였다. 결론적으로 전산유체역학 소프트웨어에 따라 축소 APR+ 원자로 내부유동 분포는 국부적으로 차이가 발생하였다. 비록 제한된 수의 측정치로 인해 상용 전산유체역학 소프트웨어간 예측성능을 평가하기에는 다소 한계가 있으나 CFX R.14 가 FLUENT R.14 에 비해 상대적으로 타당한 예측결과를 제시하였다. 한편 적용된 차분법의 차이로 인해 동일한 격자에 대해 FLUENT R.14 가 CFX R.14 에 비해 상대적으로 많은 계산 메모리를 필요로 하였다. 따라서 대용량 병렬 계산시 가용한 계산 자원에 적합한 전산유체역학 소프트웨어가 선정되어야 한다.
