  • Anti-lock Braking System(ABS) is a device which prevents the wheels form locked up under emergency braking of a vehicle. So it helps the vehicle to maintain the steerability and shortens the braking distance by maintaining optimal frictional force during braking since the tire road slip is controlled in acceptable range. Recently, ABS is accepted as a standard equipment in vehicles, especially in commercial vehicles(bus and trucks). Commercial vehicles don´t use hydraulic lines but use pneumatic lines for braking system mostly.   • Recently, many automotive companies tend to apply an air quality system (AQS), which prevents polluted air such as smoke or dust by controlling air intake actuator of vehicle, to satisfy the consumer's need for agreeable in-vehicle environment. However, performance of the traditional AQS is not satisfactory because a polluted air may enter into the inside of vehicle through the breaks of windows. Especially, the commercial vehicles such as bus or truck need to be prevented polluted air from the breaks of vehicle. Hence, as an alternative to the traditional AQS, this paper presents the architecture of smart AQS for commercial vehicle and implementation of the smart AQS. Also, the performance of the suggested system is evaluated through an experimental testbed.

  • According to the accident statistics published by the National Police Agency in 2007, the number of commercial vehicle accidents explains 3.5 percent of the total number of traffic accidents of the year. Compared to other types of vehicles commercial vehicles may provide more serious damages to both driver himself and passengers. Thus, they generate more serious social and economic problems. There have been various forms of systems such as a digital speedometer or a black box to meet the social requirement for reducing traffic accidents and improving safe driving. However, since the current systems are based on the data often accidents happened, there are lots of limitations to control drivers in real-time. Also, the current speedometers provide drivers with only speeds of vehicles and RPM information regardless of actual dangerous drive behaviors. Therefor, they lack of the effectiveness in terms of safety. In this research, real-time information systems for improving driver safety based on automatic risky driving behaviors, and thresholds to determine risky driving patterns were studied.

  • Antilock Brake System (ABS) is indispensable safety equipment for vehicles today. In order to develop new ABS ECU suitable for pneumatic brake system of a bus, a Hardware In-the-Loop Simulation (HILS) System was developed. In this HILS, the pneumatic brake system of a bus and antilock brake component were used as hardware. For the computer simulation, the 14-Degree of Freedom (DOF) bus dynamic model was constructed using the Matlab/Simulink software package. This model was compiled and downloaded in the simulation board, where the Power PC processor was used for real-time simulation. Additional commercial package, the ControlDesk was used to monitor the dynamic simulation results and physical signal values. This paper will focus on the procedure and results of evaluating the ECU in the HILS simulation. Two representative cases, wet basalt road and $split-{\mu}$ road, were used to simulate real road conditions. At each simulated road, the vehicle was driven and stopped under the help of the developed ECU. In each simulation, the dynamical behavior of the vehicle was monitored. After enough tests in the laboratory using HILS, the parameter-tuned ECU was equipped in a real bus, which was driven and stopped in the real test field in Korea. And finally, the experiment results of ABS equipped vehicle's dynamic behavior both in HILS test and in test fields were compared.

  • For bus drivers' safe driving, a policy that analyzes the causes of the drivers' traffic accidents and then assists their safe driving is required. Therefore, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport set up its plan to gradually expand the equipping of commercial vehicles with FCWS (Forward Collision Warning System) and LDWS(Lane Departure Warning System), from the driver-supporting ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). However, there is not much basic research on the analysis of bus drivers' traffic accidents in Korea. As such, the time is appropriate to research what is the most necessary ADAS for bus drivers going forward to prevent bus accidents. The purpose of this research is to analyze how serious the accidents were in the different bus routes and whether the accidents were repetitive, and to give recommendations on how to support ADAS for buses, as an improvement. A model of ordered logit was used to analyze how serious the accidents were and as a result, vehicle to pedestrian accidents which directly affected individuals were statistically significant in all of the models, and violations of regulations, such as speeding, traffic signal violation and violation of safeguards for passengers, were indicated in common in several models. Therefore, the pedestrian-sensor system and automatic emergency control device for pedestrian should be installed to reduce bus accidents directly affecting persons in the future, and education for drivers and ADAS are to be offered to reduce the violations of regulations.

  • As the market size of multiprocessor systems for commercial applications, parallel systems, especially cache-coherent shared-memory multiprocessors that are conventionally designed for scientific applications need to be tuned in different fashion to achieve the best performance for new application area. In this paper, indepth investigation on the memory behavior which is the primary cause for performance changes were made. We chose representative benchmarks in scientific and commercial application areas. After running execution-driven simulation for bus-based cache-coherent shared-memory multiprocessors, we experienced significant differences and conclude that the systems must be carefully and differently designed to achieve the best performance when they are built for distinct applications.

  • Because of high oil prices and emission gas problems, many governments tighten regulation of fuel economy and emission gas. For Passenger car, there are many researches for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and they are being manufactured. On the other hand, there are few researches for plug-in hybrid electric bus that is heavy commercial vehicle. In this study, analysis of fuel economy for series plug-in hybrid electric bus according to engine operation strategy based on simulation is conducted. Forward simulator is developed using Autonomie. Engine operation strategies consist on constant engine operation strategy and engine on/off operation strategy. Considering the engine operation strategy, results of vehicle speed, engine operating points and fuel economy are obtained and analyzed. As a result, engine on/off operation strategy has more advantage than constant engine operation strategy in terms of fuel economy.

  • In electric power system, the circuit breaker is not operated when the higher voltage then the rated TRV(transient Recovery Voltage) appeared in the circuit breaking, The TRV of a circuit breaker means the characteristics of reignition by the arc between two poles. and is decided by the value of connecting Impedance. In this paper we of carried out many kinds of experiments varying the types of bus, the types of installation, the length of installation between 22.9 [kV] level circuit breaker and MTR in general 154/22.9[kV] system, We also simulated the characteristics of TRV using EMTP-RV program. The suitability of TRV in assessed by Uc, RRRV(Rate of Rise of Recovery Voltage) which are defined by the international guide, IEC62271-100. The values of RRRV gained from the cable-made bus are 590[%] lesser than those from the NSPB-made bus respectively. So the triangled type is more rational in the aspect of TRV.

  • This paper presents a scheme for the interconnection of dispersed generator systems(DGs) based on load .unbalance and load model in composite distribution systems. Groups of each individual load model consist of residential, industrial, commercial, official and agricultural load. The unbalance is involved with many single-phase line segment. . Voltage profile improvement and system loss minimization by installation of DGs depend greatly on how they are placed and operated in the distribution systems. So, DGs can reduce distribution real power losses and replace large-scale generators if they are placed appropriately in the distribution systems. The main idea of solving fuzzy goal programming is to transform the original objective function and constraints into the equivalent multi-objectives functions with fuzzy sets to evaluate their imprecise nature for the criterion of power loss minimization, the number or total capacity of DGs and the bus voltage deviation, and then solve the problem using genetic algorithm. The method proposed is applied to IEEE 13 bus and 34 bus test systems to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Brief review of the field test and application of a superconducting fault current limiter

  • This article reviews the recent activities of field testing and application of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) based on high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The review particularly focuses on the trends in the field tests in terms of the technical aspects and commercial activities of the SFCLs. Stimulated by the discovery of HTS, numerous research and development activities have been conducted worldwide for SFCLs operating from distribution voltages to transmission voltages. Different types of SFCLs have been developed and field-tested. Consequently, more than 20 field tests and applications have been performed on real grids worldwide while supplying electric power to the customers. These field tests have not only provided the track records of the operation experiences including the problems and maintenance during operation, but also proved their current limiting capabilities against real faults, rendering this new technology highly viable. Through these activities, the following trends in the status of field testing and application are observed. Resistive-type SFCLs with HTS-coated conductors were dominantly used in the most recent field tests. This implies that the resistive type is technically more mature than the other types. Bus-bar coupling and transformer feeders were the major application locations. It is of importance that most of the field applications were conducted as R&D projects. A relevant change from the R&D stage to the application stage is shown as recently deployed SFCLs are expected to be under long-term operation and commercial service. Here, we review the installation of these SFCLs by substation. This review also discusses the recent activities for their commercial applications.
