Earthmoving operations account for approximately 25% of construction cost, generally executed prior to the construction of buildings and structures with heavy equipment. For the successful completion of earthwork projects, it is crucial to constantly monitor earthwork equipment (e.g., trucks), estimate productivity, and optimize the construction process and equipment on a construction site. Traditional methods however require time-consuming and painstaking tasks for the manual observations of the ongoing field operations. This study proposed the use of a GPS sensor embedded in a smartphone for the tracking and visualization of equipment locations, which are in turn used for the estimation and simulation of cycle times and production rates of ongoing earthwork. This approach is implemented into a digital platform enabling real-time data collection and simulation, particularly in a 2D (e.g., maps) or 3D (e.g., point clouds) virtual environment where the spatial and temporal flows of trucks are visualized. In the case study, the digital platform is applied for an earthmoving operation at the site development work of commercial factories. The results demonstrate that the production rates of various equipment usage scenarios (e.g., the different numbers of trucks) can be estimated through simulation, and then, the optimal number of tucks for the equipment fleet can be determined, thus supporting the practical potential of real-time sensing and simulation for onsite equipment management.

In recent decades, infrastructural development has exploded, particularly in the coastal region of Saudi Arabia. The rising demand of most consumed aggregate in construction can be effectively compensated by the alternative material like scoria which lavishly exists in the western region. Scoria is characterized as lightweight aggregate beneficially used to develop lightweight concrete (LWC) - a potential alternative of normal weight concrete (NWC) ensuring reduction in the structural element's size, increase in building height, comparatively lighter foundation, etc. Hence, the goal of this study is to incorporate scoria-based structural lightweight concrete and evaluate its impact on superstructure and foundation design beside contributing to the economy of construction. Fresh, mechanical, and rheological properties of the novel LWC have been investigated. The structural analyses employ the NWC as well as LWC based structures under seismic and wind loadings. The commercial finite element package - ETABS was employed to find out the change in structural responses and foundations. The cost estimation and SWOT analysis for superstructure and foundation have also been carried out. It was revealed that the developed LWC enabled a more flexible structural design. Notable reduction in the steel and concrete prices of LWC might be possible in the low-rise building. It is postulated that the cost-effective and eco-friendly LWC will promote the usage of scoria as an effective alternative in Saudi Arabia and GCC countries for structurally viable LWC construction.

Recently, due to the increase in high-rise apartment and residential-commercial complex buildings, a number of mega-class mass concrete members with a thickness of 3m or more have been designed. As the construction of mass concrete such as transfer beam and slab is increasing not only in foundation members but also in special structures, research on reducing temperature cracks in mass concrete is being conducted. To review temperature cracks in mass concrete, it is important to review the thermal properties of concrete, but it is difficult to use an adiabatic temperature rise tester in the field, so the semi-adiabatic temperature rise test is mainly used. In this study, to improve the accuracy of the results of concrete heat characteristics gained by the semi-adiabatic temperature rise test, various factors affecting heat loss compensation and methods were reviewed and presented.

The purpose of this study is to establish the central hierarchy and urban spatial structure of Daejeon in 2040 using differentiated analysis indicators. In order to establish a central hierarchy in the future urban space of Daejeon City, three indicators were derived: population density, use of buildings (commercial, office, residential, etc.) and traffic volume data(KTDB). The results of analyzing the center hierarchy using indicators are as follows. First, the primary centers responsible for urban (core) functions are set in three areas, including Dunsan downtown, the original downtown (Daejeon Station area, designated as a special urban convergence zone), and Doan New Town, and the secondary centers corresponding to sub-city centers (regional bases). was set at 9, 10 tertiary centers corresponding to regional centers (living area centers), and a center hierarchy was established with 5 new specialized bases. Second, new secondary and tertiary centers emerged that were different from the center hierarchy in the 2030 Daejeon Urban Basic Plan. The three indicators used in this study yielded meaningful results in establishing urban spatial structure and central hierarchy that can secure urban competitiveness.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the fire resistant performances of load-bearing wall using both composite and steel stud panel infilled with light-weight formed mortar under axial loading according to KS F 2257(1999). The minimum requirement of 2 hours fire resistant rating is needed for the residential and commercial buildings under the fire regulation of Korea. From test results, it is found that two types of specimen composed of the hybrid stud and steel stud panel filled with light-weight formed mortar fited in with the requirement of 2 hours fire resisting rate for the load-bearing wall. In the conclusions, the specimen with hybrid stud shows predominating fire-resistant performance on the adiabatic effects rather than that of the steel stud specimen.
Termites are important decomposers in the ecosystem. They are also economically significant structural pests. In this study, we reviewed the developments of termite control and recent research on termite management to provide information on the prevention and control of termites. In Korea, most of the damage to wooden historical buildings is caused by subterranean termites. Reticulitermes speratus kyushuensis is the main species, which is widely found throughout the country. In the early 1900s, inorganic insecticides, such as arsenic dust, were used for termite control. After the synthesis of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticide in the 1940s, it was widely utilized and demonstrated high termite control efficacy. However, chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides were later banned, disappearing from markets after reports emerged concerning environmental contamination and toxicity to humans. Therefore, the termite control industry sought a new termiticide; hence many pesticides were utilized for termite control. Organophosphate (1960s), carbamate (1970s), pyrethroid, and insect growth inhibitor (1980s) were newly synthesized and adopted. In the 1990s, the first commercial baits using chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSI) were developed, providing a means to eliminate an entire colony of subterranean termites around a structure. Many studies have been carried out on soil termiticides (liquid termiticides) and CSI baits to increase their efficacy, and different baits such as aboveground bait stations, fluid bait, and high-durability bait were also developed in the 2000s. In addition, the paradigm of termite control has shifted from localized treatments using soil termiticides to area-wide pest management using CSI baits to create termite-free zones and protect buildings over time. Termite infestations in wooden historical buildings in Korea have been reported since 1980, and considerable attention was drawn in the 1990s when several UNESCO world heritages such as the Jongmyo Shrine and the Janggyeong Panjeon Depositories of Haeinsa Temple were infested by subterranean termites. Since then, a survey of termite infestation in wooden architectural heritage has been conducted, and the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Heritage Care Program regularly monitors those properties. Finally, we suggest termite management using primarily CSI baits, selective application of various soil treatments applied to the object, foundation soil treatment, research and development of durable termite baits, application of area-wide programs for wooden-building complexes, application of integrated termite management (ITM), and regular education for owners and managers to prevent and reduce termite damage.

Crime occurs differently based on not only place locations and building uses but also the characteristics of the people who use the place and the spatial structures of the buildings and locations. Therefore, if spatial big data, which contain spatial and regional properties, can be utilized, proper crime prevention measures can be enacted. Recently, with the advent of big data and the revolutionary intelligent information era, predictive policing has emerged as a new paradigm for police activities. Based on 7420 actual crime incidents occurring over three years in a typical provincial city, "J city," this study identified the areas in which crimes occurred and predicted risky areas. Spatial regression analysis was performed using spatial big data about only physical and environmental variables. Based on the results, using the street width, average number of building floors, building coverage ratio, the type of use of the first floor (Type II neighborhood living facility, commercial facility, pleasure use, or residential use), this study established a Crime Incident Prediction Model (CIPM) based on Bayesian probability theory. As a result, it was found that the model was suitable for crime prediction because the overlap analysis with the actual crime areas and the receiver operating characteristic curve (Roc curve), which evaluated the accuracy of the model, showed an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.8. It was also found that a block where the commercial and entertainment facilities were concentrated, a block where the number of building floors is high, and a block where the commercial, entertainment, residential facilities are mixed are high-risk areas. This study provides a meaningful step forward to the development of a crime prediction model, unlike previous studies that explored the spatial distribution of crime and the factors influencing crime occurrence.

A novel energy production system which has fascinated a wide consideration because of its several benefits that are called floating photovoltaic technology (FPVT). The FPVT system that helps to minimize the evaporation of water as well as an increase in energy production. For the research purposes, both electrical and mechanical structure requires studying of these systems for the development of FPVT power plants. From different points of views, numerous researches have been directed on FPVT systems that have evaluated these systems. The present research article give a logical investigation and up to date review that shows the different features and components of FPVT systems as an energy production system is offered. This articles reviewing the FPVT that gets the attention of the scientists who have the investigational stage and involuntary inspection of FPVT systems in addition to influence of implementing these systems on the water surface. Also, a comprehensive comparison has been constructed that shows the cons and pros of various types of solar systems that could be installed in various locations. In this review, it has been found that solar energy on the roof of a dwelling house generally has a power of 5 to 20 kW, while the inhabitants of commercial buildings generally have a power of 100 kW or more. The average power capacity of a floating solar panel is 11% more of the average capacity of a solar panel installed on the ground. Studies show that 40% of the water in open reservoirs is lost through evaporation. By covering only 30% of the water surface, evaporation can be reduced by 49%. The global solar panel market exceeds 100 GW and the capacity of 104 GW will bring the annual growth rate to 6%. In 2018, the world's total photovoltaic capacity reached 512 GW, an increase of 27% compared to the total capacity and about 55% of the renewable resources newly created that come from photovoltaic systems. It has been also predicted by this review that in 2025 the Solar technology including the FPVT system will increase by 7.38% that is 485.4 GW more of today installed power worldwide.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the short-term weathering on the flame retardant performance of wood coated with Dancheong. Flame retardants were applied on the Dancheong coated Korean red pine. Flame retardants applied panels were layed at the two conditions of outdoor exposure and artificial aging to assess the reliability of artificial aging. Flame retardants used were commercial products developed for historical wooden buildings. Scanning electron micrographs revealed the forming of carbonized membrane by melting of flame retardant on wood surface. These carbonized membranes may help delay the further combustion of wood. Flame retardant performance was assessed by measuring heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) by cone calorimetry. There was no difference in flame retardant performance between before and after 6-month outdoor exposure tests. And also no difference in flame retardant performance between before and after 2-week artificial aging which corresponds to 6-month outdoor exposure. Both tests showed the similar results of combustion characteristics.
