  • Combustion characteristics were examined experimentally for a swirl-stabilized double cone premixed burner nozzle used for industrial gas turbines for power generation. An original model and a variant with a different fuel injection pattern are tested to compare their combustion characteristics such as NOx, CO and stability in pressurized conditions with single burner-flame and in an ambient multi-flame conditions with multi-burners. Test results show that NOx emissions are smaller for the variant, whose number of fuel holes is reduced with the same total area of fuel holes, in ambient and pressurized single-flame conditions with single burner, which results from enhanced fuel/air mixing due to a higher penetration of fuel into the air stream. The multi-burnerflame test results show that NOx emissions are smaller for the variant due to reduced flame interactions, which, on the contrary, slightly reduces the stability margin. On-site test results fromin an actual power plants also show that NOx emissions are reduced for the variant, compared with the original one, which is in agreement with the lab test results stated above.

  • Objectives : Many researches have studied warm needling technique to standardize its treatment by temperature measurement and material differences in the effectiveness. The purpose of this study is to compare the temperature changes of the acupuncture needle shaft during the combustion process of the moxa stick to determine the heat transfer pattern of the warn needling. Methods : A moxa stick($7{\times}8mm$) was connected to one side of the needle shaft using a stainless steel needle(ø 0.3 mm, ø 0.5 mm, ø 0.8 mm, shaft length 40 mm) with the needle handle removed. During the warm needling, temperature changes of the needle shaft were observed with an infrared camera(Flir E30) and an infrared thermometer(TESTO 845). Results : In the normal condition, heat transmit of needle shaft increased at spots 10 mm and 25 mm below the moxa stick. The amount of heat transmit increased with the diameter of needle shaft. However, when the heat shield was installed to exclude radiant heat from the moxa stick, heat transfer was less at 10 mm below the moxa stick and no temperature change was observed at 25 mm below the moxa stick. Heat transfer by warm needling does not reach the end of needle shaft even in ø 0.8 mm needle. Conclusions : It is suggested that the radiant heat of moxa stick results in the heat transmit of acupuncture needle shaft. Thus, radiant heat transmit must be considered as one of the heat transfer characteristics of the warm needling.

  • In this study, comprehensive air quality monitoring was undertaken with a variety of objectives to collect data on the levels of various indoor and ambient air quality parameters in the urban areas of Seoul and Taegu. The sampling sites were comprised of six offices, six residences and six restaurants in each city. The ambient air adjacent to the indoor sites was also simultaneously sampled for the same constituents. The sampling was conducted in two phases: summer of 1994 and winter of 1994/95. A range of air quality parameters were measured simultaneously, which include RSP, CO, COB, NOB, a range of VOC, airborne microbials, temperature, and relative humidity. The indoor and ambient levels of the pollutants measured in this study varied widely between the three types of environments studied. Comparison of median values for the three groups revealed that restaurants had higher indoor levels of most pollutants than homes or offices. There was also a clear pattern of the indoor levels of target pollutants being higher than those outdoors, particularly in restaurants. Concentrations of CO and most of the VOC were found to be significantly higher in the commercial districts, indicating the influence of vehicle exhaust emissions. A very wide range of VOC levels was documented in this study. Although median indoorloutdoor ratios indicated a generally increasing level of VOC indoors when compared to those outdoors, no statistically significant differences were found between indoor and outdoor VOC levels in homes and offices, implying the importance of ambient air quality in determining the quality of indoor air for homes and offices in urban areas. In addition, there was a general pattern of increasing concentrations from summer to winter, and similarly from outdoor to indoor air for nearly all target compounds. The seasonal differences in median levels were very clearly seen for fuel combustion related pollutants such as RSP, CO and VOC, this being attributed to the effects of increased fuel consumption during the cold season and to meteorological factors.

  • In this study, temperature characteristics and fire damage form were analyzed to investigate flame spreading form and fire probability from ignition sources subject to drivit component materials which is finishing material in architecture. Ignition sources were limited to a gas torch and exterior panel board fire, and the size of the sample was manufacture in 30 cm length ${\times}$ 50 cm height ${\times}$ 5cm thickness size. Marble (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall), marble (inner wall) + 4 mm plaster stone (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit (outer wall), sandwich panel + 3 mm driver bit + insulation (outer wall), and gypsum board (inner wall) + 3 mm drivit (outer wall) were prepared for the sample. As result of the research for temperature characteristics, large temperature difference by each material was shown in $218^{\circ}C{\sim}995^{\circ}C$ at 30 seconds and $501^{\circ}C{\sim}1078^{\circ}C$ at 300 seconds. Especially when the inner wall was a plaster board, lowest temperature of $501^{\circ}C$ was shown at 300 seconds and marble inner wall showed the following lowest temperature of $900^{\circ}C$. Temperature rising over $1000^{\circ}C$ was shown in other materials. Regarding fire damage form, drivit or gypsum board outer wall parts exposed to fire showed combustion and carbonization to show calcination(breaking phenomenon) and influence of heat exposure was higher as calcination became more severe.

  • In this research, it is intended to measure shape of the nozzle throat of the KL-3 engine, which is the main engine of the KSR-III rocket. For the purpose, an image-based method was invented to replace the 3D pointer, which is actually inaccessible to such large scale engines. As a result, our equipment showed satisfactory Performances. Analysing the results of experiments, we find that the pattern of ablation is determined by the spray pattern and that the process of thermal ablation phenomena can be categorized in three regimes - the first regime that the shape of nozzle throat is maintained and ablation is negligible, the second regime that saw-tooth form is developed and ablation is accelerated, and the third regime that the saw-tooth form is already established and the growth of ablation rate is reduced Also, we find that the ratio of area increase after 60 seconds combustion is +5.82% and conclude that the ratio is acceptable and satisfactory.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the damage patterns and metal structure of 3 phase mold transformers collected from places where accidents have occurred. Compared to an oil-immersed transformer, a mold transformer has the advantage of requiring a smaller installation area and can be kept clean, while its disadvantages include the fact that abnormal symptoms of an accident are difficult to discover and its repair is impossible. The capacity of the mold transformers collected from places where accidents have occurred was 200kVA with primary voltages being F23,900V, R22,900V, 21,900V, 20,900V, 19,900V, etc., as well as secondary voltages being 380V, 220V, etc. It was found from the analysis on the diffusion of combustion in the damaged mold transformers that fire occurred first inside the U-phase primary winding and that carbonization and heat were diffused to V-phase and W-phase in V-pattern. In addition, from the analysis on the cross-sectional structure of the metal of the melted high voltage winding using a metallurgical microscope, it was found that the boundary surface, voids, and columnar structure were formed when an interlayer short-circuit had occurred Therefore, even though it is not possible to find the cause for the occurrence of an interlayer short-circuit at the inner side of the primary winding, it is thought that, due to the thermal energy generated when the short-circuit occurred, the heat source was diffused to the upper side and outside, causing a secondary accident.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the cause of high PM2.5 mass concentrations in Cheongju for the period of non-Asian dust days using the weather chart, the stream lines at 850 hPa, the backward trajectory, and the weather and air quality model. As a result of analyzing the time series of PM2.5 concentrations and weather charts for the episodic days in Cheongju, the weather patterns were shown in related to long-range transport of PM2.5 from China or surrounding areas. In fact, in the PM2.5 time series, 60-80 ㎍ m-3, which is more than 2-3 times higher than the concentration attributed to Cheongju activities, was observed as a background concentration related to long-range transport. The distribution of high PM2.5 concentration was typically dependent on the locations of the high and low pressures above the ground while the upper jet stream passed through the Korean Peninsula. Consequently, the high PM2.5 concentration in Cheongju is due to massive air pollutants in the form of smog originated from industrial, household and energy combustion sources of Beijing and other nearby regions of China. These air pollutants move along a fast zonal wind caused by the atmospheric pressure arrangement. high concentration of PM2.5 in Cheongju City is because the mass of air pollutants in the form of smog generated from industrial, household and energy combustion origins in Beijing or other nearby regions of China move along a fast wind speed zone according to the atmospheric pressure arrangement of long-distance transportation. Air pollutants including PM2.5 show an M-shaped pattern that passes through the topography of the Cheongju basin from north to south as a belt or band-shaped pollutant. The ground high pressure according to the above-ground high pressure expansion area and cut-off low or low pressure arrangement, or the bands in the form of river stems appear in a gradual incremental pattern that changes into a U-shape under the influence of the wind.

  • Vacuum carburizing continues to gain acceptance as an alternative to atmosphere carburizing particularly in the car industry. The advantages of low-pressure carburization over atmospheric gas carburization is not only the creation of a surface entirely free of oxide and the environmentally friendly nature of these methods but also an improvement in deformation behaviour achieved by combining carburization with gas quenching, a reduction in batch times by increasing the carburization temperature, low gas and energy consumption and the prevention of soot to a large extent. In present study, an improved vacuum carburizing method is provided which is effective to deposit carbon in the surface of materials and to reduce cycle time. Also LPC process simulator was made to optimize to process controls parameters such as pulse/pause cycles of pressure pattern, temperature, carburizing time, diffusion time. The carburizing process was simulated by a diffusion calculation program, where as the model parameters are proposed with help the experimental results and allows the control of the carburizing process with good accordance to the practical results. Thus it can be concluded that LPC process control method based on the theoretical simulation and experimental datas appears to provide a reasonable tool for prototype LPC system.

  • Experimental investigation on flame spread along suspended droplet arrays have been conducted with various droplet spacings and ambient air velocities. Especially, an opposed air stream is introduced to simulate fundamental flame spread behaviors in spray combustion. High-speed chemiluminescence imaging technique of OH radicals has been adopted to measure flame spread rates and to observe various flame spread behaviors. The fuel used is n-Decane and the air velocity varies from 0 to 17cm/s. The pattern of flame spread is grouped into two: a continuous mode and an intermittent one. It is found that there exists droplet spcings, above which flame spread does not occur. The increase of ambient air velocity causes the limit droplet spacing of flame spread to become small due to the increase of apparent flame stretch. As the ambient air velocity decreases, flame spread rate increases and then decreases after taking a maximum flame spread rate. This suggests that there exists a moderate air flowing to give a maximum flame spread rate due to enhanced chemical reaction by the increase of oxidizer concentration.

  • This paper describes a novel processing technique for the fabrication of polymer-derived SiCN (silicone carbonitride) microstructures for extreme microelectromechanical system (MEMS) applications. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold was formed on an SU-8 pattern using a standard UV photolithographic process. Next, the liquid precursor, polysilazane, was injected into the PDMS mold to fabricate free-standing SiCN microstructures. Finally, the solid polymer SiCN microstructure was cross-linked using hot isostatic pressure at $400^{\circ}C$ and 205 bar. The optimal pyrolysis and annealing conditions to form a ceramic microstructure capable of withstanding temperatures over $1400^{\circ}C$ were determined. Using the optimal process conditions, the fabricated SiCN ceramic microstructure possessed excellent characteristics includingshear strength (15.2 N), insulation resistance ($2.163{\times}10^{14}\;{\Omega}$, and BDV (1.2 kV, minimum). Since the fabricated ceramic SiCN microstructure has improved electrical and physical characteristics compared to bulk Si wafers, it may be applied to harsh environments and high-power MEMS applications such as heat exchangers and combustion chambers.
