Optimization of in-cylinder flow is regarded as one of the most important factors to realize stable stratified charge combustion in a Spark-ignited Direct Injection(SDI) engine. Therefore, Computational Fluid Dynamic(CFD) simulation technique were used to clarify the characteristics of in-cylinder flow of a SDI engine with top entry intake port. Also, CFD results were compared to experimental results using Laser Doppler Velocimetry(LDV), Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) and good validations were met. As the results reverse tumble flow generated during intake process was preserved by configuration of curved piston while base and reverse tumbles were diminished at the end of compression stroke in case of flat top piston. In addition, it will be needed to optimize the fuel mixture distribution based on these results.

The instability wave formed near nozzle region grows to vortex with large scale in downstream region of spray. It plays an important role in the fuel-air mixing, combustion process and engine exhaust emissions in direct injection diesel engine. The objective of this study is to analyze effect of variant parameters (injection pressure, ambient gas density, etc.) and fuel properties on spray instability near nozzle region. Spray structure near nozzle region was investigated using a magnification photograph. A pulsed Nd-YAG laser was used as a light source, and image was taken by CCD camera. The following conclusions are drawn from this experimental analysis. In low ambient density, the effect of fuel properties on spray instability near nozzle region is dominant. In high ambient density, the effect of ambient gas on spray instability near nozzle region is dominant. High jet velocity has strong influence on spray instability.

In this research, it is intended to measure shape of the nozzle throat of the KL-3 engine, which is the main engine of the KSR-III rocket. For the purpose, an image-based method was invented to replace the 3D pointer, which is actually inaccessible to such large scale engines. As a result, our equipment showed satisfactory Performances. Analysing the results of experiments, we find that the pattern of ablation is determined by the spray pattern and that the process of thermal ablation phenomena can be categorized in three regimes - the first regime that the shape of nozzle throat is maintained and ablation is negligible, the second regime that saw-tooth form is developed and ablation is accelerated, and the third regime that the saw-tooth form is already established and the growth of ablation rate is reduced Also, we find that the ratio of area increase after 60 seconds combustion is +5.82% and conclude that the ratio is acceptable and satisfactory.

This study was carried out to investigate the injection characteristics of 800 kPa compressed natural gas compressed natural gas (CNG) injector developed in Korea. The CNG injector with multi-holes, employed in this experiment, was designed to inject CNG in the manifold at high pressure of 800 kPa. The spray macroscopic visualization test was carried out via Schlieren photography to study fuel-air mixing process. The fundamental spray characteristics, such as spray penetration, spray cone angle and spray velocity, were evaluated in the constant volume combustion chamber (CVCC) with varying the constant back pressure in CVCC from 0 to 1.8 bar. For the safety reason, nitrogen ($N_2$) and an acetone tracer were utilized as a surrogate gas fuel instead of CNG. The surrogate gas fuel pressures were controlled at 3, 5.5, and 8 bar, respectively. Injection durations were set at 5 ms throughout the experiment. The simulating events of the low engine speed were arranged at 1,000 rpm. The spray images were recorded by using a high-speed camera with a frame rate of 10,000 f/s at $512{\times}256pixels$. The spray characteristics were analyzed by using the image processing (Matlab). The results showed the significant difference that higher injection pressure had more effect on the spray shape than the lower injection pressure. When the injection pressure was increased, the longer spray penetration occurred. Moreover, the linear relation between speed and time are dependent on the injection pressure as well.

The effects of hydrogen enrichment to methane have been investigated with swirl-stabilized premixed hydrogen-enriched methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor. The hydrogen-enriched methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame characteristics were examined for different amount of hydrogen addition to the methane fuel and different swirl strengths. The hydrogen addition effects and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using micro-thermocouple, particle image velocity meter (PIV) and chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the flame area increases at upstream of reaction zone because of increase in ignition energy from recirculation flow for increase in swirl intensity. The flame area is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The higher combustibility of hydrogen makes reaction faster, raises the temperature of reaction zone and expands the reaction zone, consequently recirculation flow to reaction zone is reduced. The temperature of reaction zone increases with hydrogen addition even though the adiabatic flame temperature of the mixture gas decreases with increase in the amount of hydrogen addition in this experiment condition because the higher combustibility of hydrogen reduces the cooler recirculation flow to the reaction zone.

For this study, Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) particles co-doped with $Ce^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$ were prepared via the combustion process using the 1:1 ratio of metal ions to reagents. The characteristics of the synthesized nano powder were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL). The various YAG peaks, with the (420) main peak, appeared at all Eu concentrationin XRD patterns. The YAG phase crystallized with results that are in good agreement with the JCPDS diffraction file 33-0040. The SEM image showed that the resulting YAG:Ce,Eu powders had uniform sizes and good homogeneity. The grain size was about 50nm. The photoluminescence spectra of the YAG:Ce,Eu nanoparticles were investigated to determine the energy level of electron transition related to luminescence processes. It was composed a broad band of $Ce^{3+}$ activator into the weak line peak of $Eu^{3+}$ in YAG host. The PL intensity of $Ce^{3+}$ has the wavelengths of 480-650 nm and The PL intensity of $Eu^{3+}$ has main peak at 590nm.

The combustion characteristics of methane/hydrogen pre-mixed flame have been investigated with swirl stabilized flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor with constant heat load of 5.81 kW. Hydrogen/methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through a burner nozzle with different degrees of swirl angle. The effects of hydrogen addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using particle image velocimetry (PIV), micro-thermocouples, various optical interference filters and gas analyzers to provide information about flow velocity, temperature distributions, and species concentrations of the reaction field. The results show that higher swirl intensity creates more recirculation flow, which reduces the temperature of the reaction zone and, consequently, reduces the thermal NO production. The distributions of flame radicals (OH, CH, C2) are dependent more on the swirl intensity than the percentage of hydrogen added to methane fuel. The NO concentration at the upper part of the reaction zone is increased with an increase in hydrogen content in the fuel mixture because higher combustibility of hydrogen assists to promote faster chemical reaction, enabling more expansion of the gases at the upper part of the reaction zone, which reduces the recirculation flow. The CO concentration in the reaction zone is reduced with an increase in hydrogen content because the amount of C content is relatively decreased.
Unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC) emissions from gasoline engines remain a primary engineering research and development concern due to stricter emission regulations. Gasoline engines produce more UBHC emissions during cold start and warm-up than during any other stage of operation, because of insufficient fuel-air mixing, particularly in view of the additional fuel enrichment used for early starting. Impingement of fuel droplets on the cylinder wall is a major source of UBHC and a concern for oil dilution. This paper describes an experimental study that was carried out to investigate the distribution and 'footprint' of fuel droplets impinging on the cylinder wall during the intake stroke under engine starting conditions. Injectors having different targeting and atomization characteristics were used in a 4-Valve engine with optical access to the intake port and combustion chamber. The spray and targeting performance were characterized using high-speed visualization and Phase Doppler Interferometry techniques. The fuel droplets impinging on the port, cylinder wall and piston top were characterized using a color imaging technique during simulated engine start-up from room temperature. Highly absorbent filter paper was placed around the circumference of the cylinder liner and on the piston top to collect fuel droplets during the intake strokes. A small amount of colored dye, which dissolves completely in gasoline, was used as the tracer. Color density on the paper, which is correlated with the amount of fuel deposited and its distribution on the cylinder wall, was measured using image analysis. The results show that by comparing the locations of the wetted footprints and their color intensities, the influence of fuel injection and engine conditions can be qualitatively and quantitatively examined. Fast FID measurements of UBHC were also performed on the engine for correlation to the mixture formation results.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the carbon capture capacity of various inorganic materials. For this purpose, the change in property of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), blast furnace slag fine powder (GGBS), and circulating fluidized bed boiler ash (CFBC) due to carbonation were analyzed. Carbonation curing was performed on all specimens through the accelerated carbonation experiment, and the amount of carbon capture was quantitatively analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis according to the age of carbonation. From the results, it is confirmed that the carbon capture capacity was shown in all specimens. The carbon capture amount was shown in the order of CFBC, OPC, and GGBS. The 28-day carbon capture of CFBC, OPC, and GGBS was 3.9%, 1.3%, and 9.4%, respectively. Carbon capture reaction occurred rapidly at the beginning of carbonation, and occurred slowly with increasing age. SEM image analysis revealed that an additional product generated by carbonation curing in all specimens was calcium carbonate.

This paper is the first investigation of the steady flow characteristics of an SI engine with a semi-wedge combustion chamber as a function of the port shape. For this purpose, the planar velocity profiles were measured at the 1.75B position by particle image velocimetry. The flow patterns were examined with both a straight and a helical port. Two swirls were observed up to 4 mm valve lift with the straight port and up to 2 mm with the helical one; however, only one swirl was present after these lifts. The flow characteristics changed suddenly between 4 and 5 mm lift in the straight port; on the other hand, the change with lift was gradual with the helical port - the transition points between flow regimes were different with the port shapes. In addition, the centers of the swirls were relatively far from the cylinder center so that the effect of eccentricity may not be negligible at 1.75B, regardless the shape. The eccentricity values with the straight port were especially high - over 0.5 for all lifts. Finally, real velocities were found to be much lower than those predicted by the assumption of ISM evaluation, with the profiles differing qualitatively as well.
