The combustion instability analysis of solid propellants is generally done by the simplified governing equations for chemically inert condensed phase region with QSHOD assumption. Since the gas phase and surface reaction layer can be more rapidly relaxed to the external perturbations than the condensed phase, these regions are treated as quasi-steady manner in the analysis. In this paper, the classical ZN(Zeldovic-Novozhilov)approach was re-examined with the presence of radiation augmented burning enhancement in the combustion. Also, the surface reaction was assumed to partially absorb the incident radiant heat fluxes and pass the remaining to the chemically inert condensed phase. As a result of the analysis, the burning rate response function was obtained which consists of a pressure response function and a radiation response function. The response function was shown to be able to predict the results of T-burner tests.
As a solution to the growing concern on the global warming, researches are being actively carried out to apply carbon dioxide capture and storage technology to power generation systems. In this study, the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) adopting oxy-combustion carbon capture was modeled and the effect of replacing the conventional air separation unit (ASU) with the ion transport membrane (ITM) on the net system efficiency was analyzed. The ITM-based system was predicted to consume less net auxiliary power owing to an additional nitrogen expander. Even with a regular pressure ratio which is 21, the ITM-based system would provide a higher net efficiency than the optimized ASU-based system which should be designed with a very high pressure ratio around 90. The optimal net efficiency of the ITM-based system is more than 3% higher than that of the ASU-based system. The influence of the operating pressure and temperature of the ITM on system efficiency was predicted to be marginal.

The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 101on1 in thrust with RP-1/LOx combination. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching in turbopump system. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. The configuration of the gas generator and the condition for performance which can maximize the objective function were determined and found to meet the design constraints. Also, the combustion analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of designed chamber and injector of gas generator. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.

In this study the regression rate of hybrid rocket fuel has been investigated by two methods. First method is to use swirl injectors for enhancement of regression rate. And second method is the modification of the helical grain deriving improvement of combustion area and generating swirl flow. Tests have been done with PMMA and gaseous oxygen. In this paper the incline angle of the helical grain was varied to find the optimal condition to obtain the max regression rate for a given operational condition.
The enhancement of flame stability in coflow jets has been investigated experimentally by observing the liftoff behaviors of nonpremixed propane and methane flames in the electric fields. The liftoff or blowoff velocities has been measured in terms of the applied AC voltages and frequency. The experimental results showed that the liftoff velocity could be extended significantly just by applying the high voltage to the central fuel nozzle both for propane and methane. As increasing the applied voltage, the liftoff velocity increases almost linearly with the applied voltage and have its maximum value at certain applied voltage. After that, the liftoff velocity showed decrease with the applied voltage. Through the experimental observation, we found that the liftoff velocity could be correlated well with the applied voltage and frequency in the linearly increasing regime. And after having maximum in the liftoff velocity, it was observed that the liftoff velocity decreases with the applied voltage irrespective of AC frequencies. To visualize the change of flame structure with electric fields, planar laser induced fluorescence technique was adopted, and the enhancement of flame stability has been explained based on the flame structural change in electric fields.

Microwave hydrothermal-assisted sol-gel method was employed to synthesize the Fe doped TiO2 photocatalyst. The morphological analysis suggests anatase phase nanoparticles of ~20 nm with an SBET area of 283.99 ㎡/g. The doping of Fe ions in TiO2 created oxygen vacancies and Ti3+ species as revealed through the XPS analysis. The reduction of the band gap (3.1 to 2.8 eV) is occurred by doping effect. The as-prepared photocatalyst was applied for removal of NOx under solar light irradiation. The doping of Fe in TiO2 facilitates 75 % of NOx oxidation efficiency which is more than two-fold enhancement than the TiO2 photocatalyst. The possible reason of enhancement is associated with high surface area, oxygen vacancy, and reduction of the band gap. Also, the low production of toxic intermediates, NO2 gas, is further confirmed by Combustion Ion Chromatography. The mechanism related NOx oxidation by the doped photocatalyst is explained in this study.

This study aims to confirm the characteristics of low swirl combustion at our low swirl model combustor. To do it, it is experimentally conducted by evaluating the flame shape, stability region and emissions according to the swirl angle. The most significant feature of low swirl combustion is a occurrence of lifted flame. Such lifted flames happen to combine exquisitely propagating feature of premixed flame with diverging flow. This feature of lifted flame was confirmed through a velocity flow field and visualized the flame in this model combustor. The visualized flame was classified according to the thermal power and equivalence ratio. The variation study in swirl angles showed that the lean flammable limit could be extended only by swirl angles. Also, as the swirl angle increased, it was confirmed that the NOx and CO emissions were decreased due to the mixing enhancement and shorter resident time.

The air velocity flowing in inner combustion chamber of SCramjet is supersonic and the time of its stay is very short as a few milliseconds. Within this short time, fuel injection, air-fuel mixing, and combustion process should be accomplished. Several methods are suggested for mixing enhancement. Among these, cavity is selected to study for mixing characteristics. The numerical simulation is performed in the case of freestream Mach number of 2.5 and cavity located in front of fuel jet injection. 3 different sized cavities of the same length-height ratio were used in order to recognize the effect about cavity size. Also, the case without cavity was analyzed to find the effect of cavity. Used code compared with the result of experiment under identical conditions and it was verified. Through this comparison and verification, mixing enhancement by cavity size could be confirmed.

In this paper, the combustion characteristics of solid propellant embedded with metal wires were analyzed by the ground tests of motors. The propellant grains were made of thermoplastic propellants with Al and Cu as metal wires for the enhancement of burning area and designed with cone shape for better ignition. These metals were used to confirm the enhancement of burning rate on thermal diffusivity properties. The internal ballistics analysis and ground test were performed to investigate the effect of burning rate for each metal wire. We obtained the results of burning rate on a difference of thermal diffusivity of each metal wire with well-made propellant grains.
The characteristics of SOx emission were investigated using SM (India) coal and Berau, C&A (Austria) coal. Experiments were performed in two different ways. In the first type of experiment, the temperature in the furnace was increased and the, samples were combusted at the ignition temperature after filling the furnace with coal. The second experimental method was to add the coal to after maintaining a constant temperature. The results demonstrated that SOx emission from coal combustion depended upon the sulfur content. In the case of Berau coal and C&A coal, an enhancement of combustibility which was accomplished by increasing the combustion temperature, an increase in airflow and decrease in particle size of coals tended to increase $SO_2$ generation. Conversely, in the case of SM coal, the concentration of $SO_2$ tended to decrease, because the high contents of $Fe_2O_3$ in the ashes increased the oxidation power of coal itself, which oxidized $SO_2$ into $SO_3$. In the case of C&A coal, the $SO_2$ peak was only observed twice. This was thought to be caused by the thermal transfer rate from the surface to the interior of the coal.
