  • In this study, ionic liquids were synthesized to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) on a laboratory scale. The vapor-liquid absorption equilibrium device (VLE) was used to investigate the carbon dioxide absorption capacity. In the regeneration study, the absorption capacity after regeneration was reduced by approximately 7% for all ionic liquids, in which the anion was sulfite-based, showing excellent regeneration. Ethyl sulfite showed the highest absorption capacity of CO2 among the ionic liquids based on the sulfite anion. In particular, the absorption capacity of [beim] ethyl sulfite was 1.1 mol CO2 / mol IL at an absorption equilibrium pressure of 22 bar. In the regeneration study, the absorption capacity after regeneration was reduced by approximately 7% for all ionic liquids, in which the anion was sulfite-based, from which regeneration is outstanding. After the absorption experiment, the viscosity of the sample tended to decrease by approximately 8% compared to that before the absorption experiment. On the other hand, the absorbent was synthesized in the first step. Moreover, the raw material used is also inexpensive and has excellent reproducibility and highly stable absorbent capacity.

  • Mercury, once released, is not destroyed but accumulates and circulates in the natural environment, causing serious harm to ecosystems and human health. In the United States, sulfur-impregnated activated carbon is being considered for the removal of vapor mercury from the flue gas of coal-fired power plants, which accounts for about 32 % of the anthropogenic emissions of mercury. In this study, a high-efficiency porous mercury adsorption material was developed to reduce the mercury vapor in the exhaust gas of coal combustion facilities, and the mercury adsorption characteristics of the material were investigated. As a result of the investigation of the vapor mercury adsorption capacity at 30℃, the silica nanotube MCM-41 was only about 35 % compared to the activated carbon Darco FGD commercially used for mercury adsorption, but it increased to 133 % when impregnated with 1.5 % sulfur. In addition, the furnace fly ash recovered from the waste copper regeneration process showed an efficiency of 523 %. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was investigated at temperatures of 30 ℃, 80 ℃, and 120 ℃, and the best adsorption performance was found to be 80 ℃. MCM-41 is a silica nanotube that can be reused many times due to its rigid structure and has additional advantages, including no possibility of fire due to the formation of hot spots, which is a concern when using activated carbon.

  • To design a reliable $CO_2$ marine geological storage system, it is necessary to perform numerical process simulation using thermodynamic equation of state. $CO_2$ capture process from the major point sources such as power plants, transport process from the capture sites to storage sites and storage process to inject $CO_2$ into the deep marine geological structure can be simulate with numerical modeling. The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyse the relevant equations of state including ideal, BWRS, PR, PRBM and SRK equation of state. We also studied the effect of thermodynamic equation of state in designing the compression and transport process. As a results of comparison of numerical calculations, all relevant equation of state excluding ideal equation of state showed similar compression behavior in pure $CO_2$. On the other hand, calculation results of BWRS, PR and PRBM showed totally different behavior in compression and transport process of captured $CO_2$ mixture from the oxy-fuel combustion coal-fired plants. It is recommended to use PR or PRBM in designing of compression and transport process of $CO_2$ mixture containing NO, Ar and $O_2$.

  • An experiment was conducted to evaluate the biochemical adverse effect of increased carbon dioxide in seawater on marine polychaete, Perinereis aibuhitensis. We measured the available energy reserves, Ea (total carbohydrate, protein, and lipid content) and the energy consumption, Ec (electron transport activity) of Perinereis aibuhitensis exposed for 7-d to a range of $CO_2$ concentration such as 0.39 (control =390 ppmv), 3.03 (=3,030 ppmv), 10.3 (=10,300 ppmv), and 30.1 (=30,100 ppmv) $CO_2$ mM, respectively. The cellular energy allocation (CEA) methodology was used to assess the adverse effects of toxic stress on the energy budget of the test organisms. The results of a decrease in CEA effect of increased carbon dioxide in seawater from all individual in Ea and Ec. Increase of carbon dioxide reduced pH in seawater, significantly. The chemical changes in sea- water caused by increasing $pCO_2$ might cause stresses to test organisms and changes in the cellular energy allocations. Results of this study can be used to understand the possible influence of $CO_2$ concentration increased by the leakage from sub-sea bed storage sites as well as fossil fuel combustion on marine organisms.

  • Biomass has been used to secure renewable energy certificates (REC) in domestic and overseas coal-fired power plants. In recent years, biofuel has been diversified from traditional wood pellets to non-woody biomass. Non-woody biomass has a higher content of alkaline metals such as K and Na than wood-based biomass, resulting in a lower melting point and an increase in slagging on boiler tubes, which reduces boiler efficiency. This study analyzed the effect of kaolin, an additive commonly used to increase melting points, on biomass co-firing to coal through thermochemical equilibrium calculations. In a previous experiment on biomass co-firing to coal conducted at 80 kWth, it was interpreted that the use of kaolin actually increased the amount of fouling. In this study, analysis showed that when kaolin was added, aluminosilicate compounds were generated due to Al2O3, which is abundant in coal, and mullite was formed. Thus, it was confirmed that the amount of slag increased when more kaolin was used. Further analysis was conducted by increasing the biomass co-firing rate from 0% to 100% at 10% intervals, and the results showed non-linear liquid slag generation. As a result, it was found that the least amount of liquid slag was generated when the biomass co-firing rate was between 50 and 60%. The phase diagram analysis showed that high melting point compounds such as leucite and feldspar were most abundantly generated under these conditions.

  • The experiment was designed to compare the char combustion kinetics of pulverized Indonesia coals commonly utilized in Korea power plants. The reaction rate of coal char has been formulated using the external and internal effectiveness factors to describe the diffusion effect quantitatively. The Random Pore Model (RPM) was used for applying internal specific surface area as a function of carbon conversion ratio. Reaction rate was obtained from reaction time using the Wire Heating Reactor (WHR) which can heat and measure the char particle temperature at the same time. BET and TGA were used to obtain physical properties such as internal specific surface area and structural parameter. Three kinds of Indonesia Sub-bituminous coals "BARAMULTI, ENERGYMAN, AGM" were used in order to derive the activation energy and pre-exponential factor. The results of this study showed that the effect of internal diffusion than that of external diffusion is the dominant as comparison of kinetics was reflected in external and internal effectiveness factors. For three kinds of coal char, finally, activation energy of intrinsic kinetics indicates 110~118 kJ/mol.

  • The blends of waste-polyethylene (W-PE)/waste-ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (W-EVA) with inorganic and phosphorous flame retardants (i.e., aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and so on) were prepared by melt mixing techniques at different compositions and foamed. The flame retardancy and foaming properties of the blends, limiting oxygen index (LOI), heat release rate (HRR), carbon monoxide yield (COY), total heat release (THR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), expandability and cell structure were investigated using cone calorimeter, SEM, LOI tester and polarizing microscope. When the composition ratios of the W-PE/W-EVA blends were 50/50 (w/w), and the ranges of the flame retardants contents were $175{\sim}220 phr$, we could obtain foams with the uniform and closed cell, high expandability (1900 % or more), high LOI, and low HRR values. These results depend on crosslinking and loaming conditions, a char formation and smoke suppressing effect. Aluminium hydroxide had more effect in the increase of LOI than magnesium hydroxide, while magnesium hydroxide considerably affected the decrease of HRR and COY.

  • Recently, according to the low-carbon green growth policy, the Stirling Engine has been increasing the interest of some sort of external combustion engines Stirling Engine is largely divided into three types ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$. Among them, a ${\gamma}$-type engine is easy to design and can be applied variously. However, owing to the connection distance between the cylinder and the crank, there was a problem that ${\gamma}$-type occupies a larger volume than the ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$-types. As one of the methods to solve this problem, we have to consider about the Yoke crank which have been applied mainly to the ${\alpha}$-type. Because there are two advantages in not only reduction of engine volume but also parallelizing the cylinder. In this study, leading on from the existing design techniques for the Ross Yoke crank, this paper presents a simple method that can apply the yoke crank design of the ${\gamma}$-type stirling engine.

  • In this study, the Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) was investigated to utilize the bottom ash and fly ash generated in the Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor (CFBC). It was confirmed that the CFBC fly ash (CFBC-F) and CFBC bottom ash (CFBC-B) had an irregular particle shape through SEM measurement. According to the results of the hazard analysis, it was also confirmed that they were environmentally safe. In the case of mixing with CFBC-F, the unit quantity was increased. Regarding the rate of change of length, shrinkage in the range of -0.05~0.50% occurred in the air dry curing condition and expansion in the range of 0.1~0.6% in the sealed curing condition. Compressive strength was increased in the sealed curing condition compared to the air dry curing condition because there was enough moisture for hydration reaction in the long term. Therefore, the results of this study are likely be used as basic research data of mine filler materials.

  • The chemical-looping combustion(CLC) has advantages of no energy loss for separation of $CO_2$ without $NO_x$ formation. This CLC system consists of oxidation and reduction reactors where metal oxides particles are circulating through these two reactors. In the present study, the reaction kinetic equations of iron oxide oxygen carriers supported on bentonite have been determined by the shrinking core model. Based on the reactivity data, design values of solid circulation rate and solids inventory were determined for the rector. Two types of interconnected fluidized bed systems were designed for CLC application, one system consists of a riser and a bubbling fluidized bed, and the other one has a riser and two bubbling fluidized beds. Solid circulation rates were varied to about $30kg/m^2s$ by aeration into a loop-seal. Solid circulation rate increases with increasing aeration velocity and it increases further with an auxiliary gas flow into the loop-seal. As solid circulation rate is increased, solid hold up in the riser increases. A typical gas leakage from the riser to the fluidized bed is found to be less than 1%.
