The flow and combustion patterns have been investigated inside the gasoline engine cylinder with the swirl or tumble flow, whereas the air flow characteristics, which are generated in the part of intake system before entering into the intake manifold, have not been known completely. It is necessary to analyze the flow field in the intake system consisting of air rater, throttle valve and intake manifold. The throttle valve, used to control the intake air flow rate, is important because it makes various mass flow rate and flow patterns. Three-dimen-sional How characteristics such as velocities, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stresses are measured by the hot wire anemometer at the exit of the throttle valve with the variation in the valve opening angle($15^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$) and the Reynolds numbers (45000, 70000 and 140000). There are a lot of changes in flow characteristics at $75^{\circ}$ due to the large recirculation flow comparing with those of the other cases, and the streamwise velocity is especially enforced strongly below the valve shaft. The other component velocities are relatively large near the centerline parallel to the valve shaft. The effects of the Reynolds number on the flow field are not severe.
This paper describes a novel processing technique for fabrication of polymer-derived SiCN (silicone carbonitride) microstructures for super-temperature MEMS applications. PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) mold is fabricated on SU-8 photoresist using standard UV photolithographic process. Liquid precursor is injected into the PDMS mold. Finally, solid polymer structure is cross-linked using HIP (hot isostatic pressure) at $400^{\circ}C$, 205 bar. Optimum pyrolysis and annealing conditions are determined to form a ceramic microstructure capable of withstanding over $1400^{\circ}C$. The fabricated SiCN ceramic microstructure has excellent characteristics, such as shear strength (15.2 N), insulation resistance ($2.163{\times}10^{14}{\Omega}$) and BDV (min. 1.2 kV) under optimum process condition. These fabricated SiCN ceramic microstructures have greater electric and physical characteristics than bulk Si wafer. The fabricated SiCN microstructures would be applied for supertemperature MEMS applications such as heat exchanger and combustion chamber.
Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transporttechnology (University of Gent) converted a GM/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimised, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing. injection timing and duration, injection pressure) we given. Special focus is given to topics related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel: ignition characteristics (importance of electrode distance), quality of the lubricating oil (crankcase gases with high contents of hydrogen), oxygen sensors (very lean operating conditions), noise reduction (configuration and length of inlet pipes). The advantages and disadvantages of a power regulation only by the air to fuel ratio (as for diesel engines) against a throttle regulation (normal gasoline or gas regulation) are examined. Finally the goals of the development of the engine are reached: power output of 90 kW, torque of 300 Nm, extremely low emission levels and backfire-safe operation.

Approximately 30 to 70 % of the mechanical losses in a reciprocating engine are contributed by the friction at the piston ring-cylinder interface. The friction characteristics of the piston ring during engine operation is known to as mixed lubrication experimentally. The mixed lubrication models based on the Average Reynolds Equation have been used by this time in order to study the tribological performance of the ring. However, the Average Reynolds Equation contains the expected value term(${\bar{h}}_r$) of local film thickness as well as nominal film thickness(h), so that the work of numerically solving ${\bar{h}}_r$ must be included to obtain the pressure in the oil film. The process of solving ${\bar{h}}_T$ causes a greater multiplying in the numerical solution. In this paper the mixed lubrication analysis using the Simplified Average Reynolds Equation in the piston ring is presented. This equation has only h as oil film thickness term. Therefore the tedious numerical procedure required to obtain ${\bar{h}}_T$ is not needed, and also, computation time can be reduced.

The pupose of this study is to measure droplet size and velocity simultaneously for a transient diesel fuel spray in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Generally, diesel combustion phenomena is mainly governed by characteristics of injection system and fuel spray. Therefore we need to clarify these characteristics for developing more economical diesel systems. In this study, correlation between droplet size and velocity was measured at downstream distance from nozzle. Governing parameters are pump speed and fuel quantity for the detailed nature in this transient diesel fuel spray. It is observed effect to the droplet size and velocity distribution. Velocity(peak, mean, rms), number density and droplet size were investigated simulaneously using PDA in the spray. Various results are presented to illustrate the effects of operation factors and correlation between the droplet diameter and velocity.

In order to design a shear coaxial injector of solid particles for underwater propulsion system, basic experiments on gas-liquid shear coaxial injector are necessary. In the gas-liquid coaxial injector self-pulsation usually occurs with an intense scream. When self-pulsation occurs, mass flow rate oscillation and intense scream are detected by the interactions between the liquid and gas phase. Self-pulsation must be suppressed since this oscillation may cause combustion instabilities. Considerable research has been conducted on self-pulsation characteristics, but these researches are conducted in swirl coaxial injector. The main objective of this research is to understand the characteristics of self-pulsation in shear coaxial injector and reveal the mechanism of the phenomenon. Toward this object, self-pulsation frequency and spray patterns are measured by laser diagnostics and indirect photography. The self-pulsation characteristics of shear coaxial injector are studied with various injection conditions, such as the pressure drop of liquid and gas phase, and recess ratio. It was found that the frequency of the self-pulsation is proportional to the liquid and gas Reynolds number, and proportional to the L/d.
An inner flow of a porous cylinder with partial slots was visualized to study fluidic phenomena in a solid rocket motor. A high-pressure chamber and an air supply system for high flow rate were used. In order to visualize the inner flow, the smoke generator with a cam-driven pump and heaters and high speed camera were adopted. The results of the cylinder type and the partial slot type were compared. As a result, the injected smoke flow in the partial slot type had circumferential fluctuations unlike the cylinder type. It was found that the circumferential flow induced from the partial slots could be the cause of combustion instability and roll torque.

In this paper, an energy regeneration algorithm is proposed to make the maximum use of the regenerative braking energy for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) equipped with a continuous variable transmission(CVT). The regenerative algorithm is developed by considering the battery state of charge(SOC), vehicle velocity and motor capacity. The hydraulic module consists of a reducing valve and a power unit to supply the front wheel brake pressure according to the control algorithm. In order to evaluate the performance of the regenerative braking algorithm and the hydraulic module, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) is performed. In the HILS system, the brake system consists of four wheel brakes and the hydraulic module. Dynamic characteristics of the HEV are simulated using an HEV simulator. In the HEV simulator, each element of the HEV powertrain such as internal combustion engine, motor, battery and CVT is modelled using MATLAB/$Simulink^{(R)}$. In the HILS, a driver operates the brake pedal with his or her foot while the vehicle speed is displayed on the monitor in real time. It is found from the HILS that the regenerative braking algorithm and the hydraulic module suggested in this paper provide a satisfactory braking performance in tracking the driving schedule and maintaining the battery state of charge.

Effect of flow uniformity on the reaction characteristics of a catalytic combustor for high temperature fuel cell system has been experimentally investigated in the present study. One of the most important factor in designing catalytic combustion is to avoid hot spot in catalysts. In this regard, it is very important to secure flow uniformity of combustor inlet. A couple of perforated plates were applied at the front of catalyst region as flow uniformity device with minimal pressure drop. Results show that the velocity and temperature profile became more uniform when applying the flow uniformity device. CO and $CH_4$ emissions at the combustor exit were decreased and the average exit temperature was slightly increased with the flow uniformity device.

Fuel consumption measurement of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is considerably different from internal combustion engine vehicle such as carbon balance method. A practical method of fuel consumption measurement has been developed for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. There are three method of hydrogen fuel consumption testing, gravimetric, PVT (pressure, volume and temperature), and mass flow, all of which necessitate physical measurements of the fuel supply. The purpose of this research is to measure the fuel consumption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on chassis-dynamometer and to give information when the research is intended to develop test method to measure hydrogen fuel economy.
