Supersonic Combustion Studies for SCRamjet Engines

  • Experiments were performed in order to examine the stability of hydrocarbon-fueled flames in cavity flameholders in supersonic airflows. Methane and ethylene were burned in two different cavity configurations having aft walls ramped at 22.5 and 90$^{\circ}$. Air stagnation temperatures were 590 K at Mach 2 and 640 K at Mach 3. Lean blowout limits showed dependence on the air mass flowrates. Visual observations, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of nitric oxide (NO), and Schlieren imaging were used to investigate these phenomena. Large differences were noted between cavity floor and cavity ramp injection schemes. Cavity ramp injection provided better performance in most cases. Ethylene pilots have a wider range of stable operation than methane. Fuel flowrates at ignition showed similar trends as lean blowout limits, but higher flowrates were required.

부력 효과의 최소화를 통한 대향류 확산화염 소화거동에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on Extinction Behavior in Buoyancy-minimized Counterflow Diffusion Flame)

  • Experimental study was conducted to elucidate flame extinction phenomena in counterflow flame. Using a curtain helium flow significantly reduced buoyancy such that the flame can be positioned at the center between the upper and lower nozzles even at the velocity ratio of 1.0. The curves of critical diluent mole fraction versus global strain rate have C-shapes. The flame oscillation was observed prior to low strain rate flame extinction at both flame conditions with and without minimizing buoyancy force. The results show that, at low strain rate flame, the self-excitation frequency with the order of 1.0 Hz in the case of utilizing pure helium gradually decreases in increase of $N_2$ mole fraction in the curtain flow, meaning that buoyancy suppresses the self-excitation of the outer edge flame.

  • In order to simulate and visually observe combustion phenomena in cylindrical radial-flow porous inert media, a radial multi-channel burner, made of transparent quartz plates, was fabricated. Flame stabilization characteristics and its pulsating instability in the burner were experimentally investigated with respect to various mixture flow rates and equivalence ratio. As a result, five different flame behaviors, such as stable flame, pulsating instability, sudden extinction, blowout and unstable extinction, were observed. Mean radial position of circularly arranged multi-flame and its averaged burning velocity were measured and then compared to the freely propagating flame. The multi-flame pulsation frequency is about several tens of Hz and it is supposed to be generated by the heat diffusion enhancement to cold pre-mixture by the intensive gas-solid interaction.

  • Predicting coal combustion by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) requires a combination of complicated flow and reaction models for turbulence, radiation, particle flows, heterogeneous combustion, and gaseous reactions. There are various levels of models available for each of the phenomena, but the use of advanced models are significantly restricted in a large-scale boiler due to the computational costs and the balance of accuracy between adopted models. In this study, the influence of coal devolatilization model and turbulent mixing rate was assessed in CFD for a commercial boiler at 500 MWe capacity. For coal devolatilization, two models were compared: i) a simple model assuming single volatile compound based on proximate analysis and ii) advanced model of FLASHCHAIN with multiple volatile species. It was found out that the influence of the model was observed near the flames but the overall gas temperature and heat transfer rate to the boiler were very similar. The devolatilization rate was found not significant since the difference in near-flame temperature became noticeable when it was multiplied by 10 or 0.1. In contrast, the influence of turbulent mixing rate (constant A in the Magnussen model) was found very large. Considering the heat transfer rate and flame temperature, a value of 1.0 was recommended for the rate constant.

극초음속 스크램제트 엔진의 연소특성 (Combustion Characteristics of Hypersonic SCRamjet Engine)

  • 본 연구는 극초음속 모델 스크램제트 엔진 연소기의 화염지지와 연료-공기 혼합과정의 특성을 살펴보기 위하여 수치해석을 이용하여 수행되었다. 연료분사 방법으로 수소연료가 초음속 유동장에 수직분사되는 경우와 공동내부에 분사되는 두 가지 경우를 채택하였으며 각각 UQ(University of Queensland, Australia)와 ANU(Australian National University, Australia)의 충격파 풍동을 이용하여 실험이 수행되었다. 수치해석을 통하여 수직분사 상류의 박리영역과 공동주변에서 연소현상이 관찰되었다. 수직분사의 박리영역과 공동내부분사의 공동은 재순환 영역을 발생시키며, 이 재순환 영역은 연료-공기의 혼합을 촉진시킨다. 또한 자발점화가 박리영역-자유류, 공동-자유류 경계면에서 발생함을 알 수 있었다.

회격자식 소각로의 열유동 해석과 결과 분석에 대한 고찰 (Discussion on the Practical Use of CFD for Grate Type Waste Incinerators)

  • Computational fluid dynamic(CFD) analysis has been frequently applied to the waste incinerators to understand the flow performance for various design and operating parameters. Since the computational modeling inevitably requires many simplifications and complicated sub-models, validity of the results should be carefully evaluated. In this study, major computational modeling and procedure of usual simulation methods for the grate-type waste incinerators were assessed. Usual simulation method does not explicitly incorporate the waste combustion, simply by assuming the combustion gas properties from the waste bed which is treated as an inlet plane. However, effect of this arbitrary assumption on the overall flow pattern is not significant, since the flow pattern is dominated by strong pattern of jet flows of the secondary air. Thus, this method is valid in understanding the effect of flow-related parameters. In analyzing the results, deriving conclusive information directly from temperature and chemical species concentration should be avoided, since the model prediction for the gaseous reaction and the radiation reveals significant discrepancies against the actual phenomena. Use of quantitative measures such as residence time is very efficient in evaluating the flow performance.

Gun식 가스버너의 연소실내 난류 선회유동장 고찰 (Investigation on the Turbulent Swirling Flow Field within the Combustion Chamber of a Gun-Type Gas Burner)

  • The turbulent swirling flow field characteristics of a gun-type gas burner with a combustion chamber were investigated under the cold flow condition. The velocities and turbulent quantities were measured by hot-wire anemometer system with an X-type probe. The turbulent swirling flow field in the edge of a jet seems to cause a recirculation flow from downstream to upstream due to the unbalance of static pressure between a main jet flow and a chamber wall. Moreover, because the recirculation flow seems to expand the main jet flow to the radial and to shorten it to the axial, the turbulent swirling flow field with a chamber increases a radial momentum but decreases an axial as compared with the case without a chamber from the range of about X/R=1.5. As a result, these phenomena can be seen through all mean velocities, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent shear stresses. All physical quantities obtained around the slits, however, show the similar magnitude and profiles as the case without a chamber within the range of about X/R=1.0.

Experimental Study on Turbulent Burning Velocities of Two-Component Fuel Mixtures of Methane, Propane and Hydrogen

  • In order to elucidate the turbulent burning velocity of the two-component fuel mixtures, the lean and rich two-component fuel mixtures, where methane, propane and hydrogen were used as fuels, were prepared keeping the laminar burning velocity nearly the same value. Clear difference in the measured turbulent burning velocity at the same turbulence intensity can be seen among the two-component fuel mixtures with different addition rate of fuel, even under nearly the same laminar burning velocity. The burning velocities of lean mixtures change almost monotonously as changing addition rate, those of rich mixtures, however, do not show such a monotony. These phenomena can be explained qualitatively from the local burning velocities, estimated by considering the preferential diffusion effect for each fuel component. In addition, a prediction expression of turbulent burning velocity proposed for the one-component fuel mixtures can be applied to the two-component fuel mixtures by using the estimated local burning velocity of each fuel mixture.

  • Multi-dimensional combustion analysis and experiment has been carried out to investigate the effects of the injector nozzle hole diameter and number on the NOx formation and fuel consumption in HYUNDAI HiMSEN engine. The behavior of spray and combustion phenomena in diesel engine was examined by FIRE code. Wave breakup and Zeldovich models were adopted to describe the atomization characteristics and NOx formation. Wallfilm model suggested by Mundo, et al. and auto-ignition model suggested by Theobald and Cheng were adopted to investigate the spray-wall interaction characteristics and ignition delay. The information of spray angle and spray tip penetration length was extracted from fuel spray visualization experiment and the fuel injection rate profile was extracted from fuel injection system experiment as an input and verification data for the combustion analysis. Next, the nine different nozzle configurations were simulated to evaluate the effect of injector hole diameter and number on the NOx formation and fuel consumption.

  • T-분기관을 전파하는 데토네이션 파에 대한 수치적 연구가 수행되었다. T-분기관은 데토네이션 파를 이용하여 여러 개의 연소기를 점화시키는 연소파 점화기라는 새로운 로켓 점화체계의 핵심 부분이다. Euler 방정식과 Induction parameter 방정식이 지배방정식으로 이용되었으며 반응 항은 상세 반응 기구로 얻어진 화학 반응 데이터베이스로부터 모델 되었다. 연계된 방정식의 풀이에는 2차 정확도의 내재적 시간적분과 3차 정확도의 TVD 알고리즘이 이용되었다. 2백만 개를 초과하는 격자를 이용하여 붕괴와 재 점화를 포함하는 데토네이션파의 거동을 포착할 수 있었으며, 연소파 점화기 화염관의 설계 요소를 얻었다.
