  • An experimental study was performed for the combustion-field visualization of the burner which burns the liquid hydrocarbon fuel atomized by an ultrasonic oscillator. Configurations of the flame and temperature gradient were caught by both high-speed camera and thermo-graphic camera, and those images were analyzed in detail through a post-processing. In addition, the fuel consumption was measured using the balance during the combustion reaction. As a result, the consumption of atomized fuel increased with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas, but any correlation between the air/fuel ratio and carrier-gas flow-rate was not found at the low flow-rate condition. Also, the combustion-field grew and reaction-temperature rose due to the strengthening of combustion reaction with the increasing flow-rate of carrier-gas and power consumption of ultrasonic oscillator.

  • Rising oil price and environmental problems are causing automotive industry to increase fuel efficiency. Improved fuel efficiency in gasoline engine was made possible by development of DISI gasoline engine. Since fuel is injected inside cylinder directly, in-cylinder temperature can be reduced than multi-port injection engine and this leads to increased compression ratio. However, engine performance is largely dependent on mixture formation process due to in-cylinder fuel injection. Especially for spray guided and air guided DISI gasoline engine, injection direction is important factor to mixture preparation. It is because interaction between intake flow and spray affect fuel-air mixture. Hence, in this study, mixture formation characteristics were analyzed by varying injection direction using KIVA 3V release2 code. Residual gas was considered for assuming combustion. Therefore, initial condition for in-cylinder temperature was set equal to the end state of exhaust stroke of combustion cycle. Since angle between intake air flow direction and spray direction affects fluid flow and evaporation field, mixture distribution was affected by fuel injection direction dominantly.

  • In this study, a rapid compression and expansion machine(RCEM) equipped with a swirl generator was designed and developed, in order to clarify normal and abnormal combustion(knocking phenomena). This RCEM is intended to simulate combustion process in actual automotive S.I.engines, having a high reproducibility in the compression stroke. Flame propagation and autoignition processes associated with normal and abnormal combustion were captured by the high speed schlieren photography. And swirl intensity. equivalence ratio and ignition position were varied to investigate the effect of turbulence, concentration in the unburnt gas region and flame propagation length. The knock intensity, knock mass fraction and knock mass fraction after autoignition were calculated by use of history of measured cylinder pressure.

  • A numerical simulation was conducted for the combustion chamber of a 4-step grate-firing boiler for wood pellet fuel. The flame is extended to the exit of combustion chamber, which is reproduced by present numerical method based on a homogeneous reaction model. Flow field from the simulation shows a strong recirculation flow at the upstream corner of the chamber, along which the flame is extended to the exit. These combustion and flow characteristics remain unchanged for partial load operations, which suggest modification of the combustion chamber structure rather than resizing should be effective to improve combustion characteristics. Possible modifications for combustion chamber are suggested such as relocating its exit, increasing the number of grate steps or installing internals such as guide baffles.

  • Large eddy simulation (LES) is increasingly used as a tool for studying the dynamics of turbulence in combustion chamber flows due to the promise of wider generality and more accurate results compared to Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) models. This study presents the appropriate subgrid-scale(SGS) model in LES for predicting the turbulent flow field in the internal combustion engine. The study of the effects of model and numerical parameters such as discretization scheme, initial condition, time step and SGS model was performed. The results of LES using the SGS model were found to be in the good agreement with experimental data.

  • The reactive flowfield of the transverse injecting combustor has been studied using Euler-Lagrange method in order to develop an efficient solution procedure for the understanding of liquid spray combustion in the transverse injecting combustor which has been widely used in ramjets and turbojet afterburners. The unsteady two-dimensional gas-phase equations have been represented in Eulerian coordinates and the liquid-phase equations have been formulated in Lagrangian coordinates. The gas-phase equations based on the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy have been supplemented by combustion. The vaporization model takes into account the transient effects associated with the droplet heating and the liquid-phase internal circulation. The droplet trajectories have been determined by the integration of the Lagrangian equation in the flow field obtained from the separate calculation without considering the iterative effect between liquid and gas phases. The reported droplet trajectories had been found to deviate from the initial conical path toward the flow direction in the very end of its lifetime when the droplet size had become small due to evaporation. The integration scheme has been based on the TEACH algorithm for gas-phase equation, the second order Runge-Kutta method for liquid-phase equations and the linear interpolation between the two coordinate systems. The calculation results has shown that the characteristics of the droplet penetration and recirculation have been strongly influenced by the interaction between gas and liquid phases in such a way that most of the vaporization process has been confined to the wake region of the injector, thereby improving the flame stabilization properties of the flowfield.

  • A method is developed to include the effect of volume expansion in the description of the flame dynamics using G-equation. Line volume-source is used to represent the effect of the exothermic process of combustion with source strength assigned by the density difference between the burned and the unburned region. The present model provides good agreement with the experimental results by using realistic volume expansion ratio which was not reached in the previous researches. Including volume expansion, the flow predicts the same behavior of measured velocity field qualitatively. The flame propagation in varying flow field due to volume expansion provides a promising way to represent the wrinkled turbulent premixed flames in a numerically efficient manner.

  • A theoretical study for the laminar round jet diffusion flame impinging on the wall was carried out to predict the characteristics and structure of impinging jet flame and heat transfer to the wall. Finite chemistry via Arrhenius equation was adopted as the combustion model. All the transport properties were considered as the variable depending on the temperature and composition. For the parametric study, the distance from nozzle to perpendicular wall and Reynolds number at nozzle exit were chosen as the major parameters. As the results of the present study, the characteristics of flow field and the distributions of temperature, density and each chemical species were obtained. The heat transfer rate from flame to the wall and the effective heating area were calculated to investigate the influence of the major parameters on the heat transfer characteristics.

  • The in-cylinder flow field of gasoline engine comprises unsteady compressible turbulent flows caused by the intake port, combustion chamber geometry. Thus, the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder flow characteristics plays an important role in the improvement of engine performances and the reduction of exhaust emission. In order to obtain the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder gas flows for a gasoline engine, the single-frame particle tracking velocimetry was developed, which is designed to measure 2-dimensional gas flow field. In this paper, influences of the swirl and tumble intensifying valves on the in-cylinder flow characteristics under the various intake flow conditions were investigated by using this PTV method. Based on the results of experiment, the generation process of swirl and tumble flow in a cylinder during intake stroke was clarified. Its effect on the tumble ratio at the end of compression stroke was also investigated.

  • Two-phase flow in a combustion chamber is experimentally analyzed according to the five different conditions in the Reynolds numbers of $1.02{\times}10^4$. As the height difference between the primary and secondary jets increases, the secondary has a little less effect on the primary one in the case on the same height difference, the primary jet is affects as the velocity of th secondary on increase. The primary-jet flow field cause the particle concentration since is controlled by the velocity of secondary jet, the height difference, and the angle of primary jet in the test section.
