  • The influence of an electric field on the combustion synthesis of ${Ti}_{5}{Si}_{3}$-x ${ZrO}_{2)$(0 $\leq$ x $\leq$0.6)was investigated. Composite of X $\geq$0.45 can only be synthesized in the presence of an electric field. Although in the absence of an electri field the system with x = 0.45 and x=0.6 can sustain a nonsteady combustion wave, the reaction is not complete. That is, an unstable wave propagates to the middle of the sample and them becomes extinguished. Wave velocity o the ${Ti}_{5}{Si}_{3}-{ZrO}_{2}$ Composites slightly increases with the imposition of external field across the sample.

Lean Burn Combustion Characteristics of Propane Premixed Flame in Electric Field (전기장 인가에 따른 프로판 예혼합 화염의 희박연소 특성)

  • In this study, characteristics of a propane-air premixed flame sin DC electric field was investigated. The stainless steel Bunsen burner and the stainless steel ring were used as electrode, and the high voltage supply was used for applying electric field. Flammability range increased significantly when the positive voltage was applied because of extension of LBO limit, while it shrank when the negative voltage was applied. The reason for this was not much related to the burning velocity, but the induced flow around the burner by electric field. withNOx production slightly increased after positive voltage was applied in identical equivalence ratio. Nevertheless, it was advantageous to apply the positive electric field to reduce the NOx since the extension of LBO limit makes the burner possible to operate in very low equivalence ratio.

  • The present study is numerically investigated for the high-pressure effects on the vaporization process in the convection-dominating flow field. Numerical results agree well with the available experimental data. The fuel droplet vaporization characterization is parametrically studied for the wide range of the operating conditions encountered with the high-pressure combustion process of turbocharged diesel engines.

Numerical Analysis of Combustion Field for Different Injection Angle in End-burning Hybrid Combustor (End-burning 하이브리드 연소기 인젝터 분사각에 따른 연소 유동장의 수치적 연구)

  • The effect of oxidizer injection angle on the combustion characteristics of end-burning hybrid combustor is numerically investigated. Besides the previously studied parameter(injector arrangement, port diameter and O/F ratio), three different injection angle are considered: parallel angle to fuel surface(Case 1), +30 degree inclined angle toward the fuel(Case 2) and 30 degree inclined angle toward the nozzle(Case 3). It is found that Case 2 has the best mixing pattern in the upstream area but has the worst combustion efficiency since non negligible amount of unburned fuel is expelled from the nozzle. In contrast, though Case 1 and Case 3 showed relatively low mixing effect than the Case 2, they had high combustion efficiency. The comparison of numerical results between Case 1 and Case 3 demonstrate that no major difference is encountered, however, Case 1 is expected to have the best combustion efficiency due to the low residence time of the Case 3 injector which heads toward the nozzle.

  • In recently, a study on the lean combustion is investigated intensively, because it is expected that this method may decrease the harmful exhaust gas and improve fuel economy in gasoline engine. The problems of lean combustion system in gasoline engine are ignition difficulty, misfire and instability of combustion. The investigation on the optimization of fuel metering and the control of mixing gas flow may be critical to improve the performance of lean combustion. In the fuel injection gasoline engine, the formation of mixture influences strongly on the engine performance such that the importance of fuel metering system becomes apparent. First of all, a study on the fuel breakup characteristics of gasoline fuel injector was carried out in this paper. Fuel injectors are pintle and 4hole-2spray type. The purpose of this study is to clarify the atomization mechanism of spray injected into atomosphere field through electronic controlled-fuel injectors, and to analyze spray characteristics such as drop size distribution and mean drop diameter produced at fuel injector. In this paper, the spray development is observed by taking photograps using 80mm still-camera system, and drop sizes are measured by PMAS. From these experiment, spray pattern injected from gasoline fuel injectors was investigated clearly. Also, it was found that SMD and drop size distribution of injected fuel spray from gasoline fuel injectors.

Reactive Flow Fields Analysis of End-Bunting Combustor with Different Impinging Type Injectors (End-Burning 연소기의 충돌형 산화제 주입기 형상 변화에 따른 연소유동장 해석)

  • The end-burning combustion field using impinging oxidizer injectors are analyzed with tangential type injectors in order to examine their mixing and combustion characteristics. The impinging type showed further improved mixing effect as well as the combustion efficiency compared to the previously studied tangential injector. A novel injector capable of delivering impinging and swirl effect is introduced in this study where it demonstrated that the grain coning effect can be avoided. It was found that the combined impinging and swirling flow would promote the radial mixing rate increasing the residence time and the turbulent intensity. However, the use of the step combustor which may augment the turbulent intensity did not show any notable difference compared to the basic combustor.

  • For the assessment of combustion stability of a liquid rocket engine, a device called "Pulse Gun" should be developed first, which can induce artificial perturbations that may lead to excitations of pressure oscillations in a combustion chamber. A model chamber has been used for identifying design parameters of a pulse gun that defines its characteristics. Dynamic pressure measurements showed that shock waves generated from pulse guns are axisymmetric around the axis of a pulse gun barrel. Pressure waves perturbed by a pulse gun induce resonant acoustic frequencies of a model chamber. This fact indicates that successful pressure field perturbations of the KSR-III combustion chamber can be performed by a newly developed pulse gun device. A maximum value of dynamic pressure peaks measured at the opposite point against a pulse gun outlet becomes stronger as charge mass of pulse gun powder increases.

  • The combustion characteristics of End-Burning hybrid combustor using different types of injector system are numerically investigated to visualize the temperature fields in the combustion chamber The basic characteristics of combustion with different O/F ratio is also analyzed in order to capture the main behavior of diffusion flame inside the swirl induced hybrid combustion chamber It was found that the arrangement of oxidizer injectors give strong effect on the temperature field dominating mixing between fuel and oxidizer. The results show that among five different oxidizer injectors arrangement, the counter flow injector has the highest mixing efficiency. However, the observed high wall temperature presence near the oxidizer injectors remains to be solved.
