Experiments were conducted to clarify role of the outermost edge flame on low-strain-rate flame extinction in buoyancy-suppressed non-premixed methane flames diluted with He and $N_2$. The use of He curtain flow produced a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ in $N_2$- and He-diluted non-premixed counterflow flame experiments. The critical He and $N_2$ mole fractions at extinction with a global strain rate were examined at various burner diameters (10, 20, and 25 mm). The results showed that the extinction curves differed appreciably with burner diameter. Before the turning point along the extinction curve, low-strain-rate flames were extinguished via shrinkage of the outermost edge flame with and without self-excitation. High-strain-rate flames were extinguished via a flame hole while the outermost edge flame was stationary. These characteristics could be identified by the behavior of the outermost edge flame. The results also showed that the outermost edge flame was not influenced by radiative heat loss but by convective heat addition and conductive heat losses to the ambient He curtain flow. The numerical results were discussed in detail. The self-excitation before the extinction of a low-strain-rate flame was well described by a dependency of the Strouhal number on global strain rate and normalized nozzle exit velocity.

Recent years have witnessed the use of micro shock tube in various engineering applications like micro combustion, micro propulsion, particle delivery systems etc. The flow characteristics occurring in the micro shock tube shows a considerable deviation from that of well established conventional macro shock tube due to very low Reynolds number and high Knudsen number effects. Also the diaphragm rupture process, which is considered to be instantaneous process in many of the conventional shock tubes, will be crucial for micro shock tubes in determining the near diaphragm flow field and shock formation. In the present study, an axi-symmetric CFD method has been applied to simulate the micro shock tube, with Maxwell's slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. The effects of finite diaphragm rupture process on the flow field and the shock formation was investigated, in detail. The results show that the shock strength attenuates rapidly as it propagates through micro shock tubes.

In this study, the injector transfer function (ITF) of a gas-gas coaxial jet-swirl injector is measured by applying excitation to jet or swirl flow using a loudspeaker. As a result of measuring the ITF according to the variation of feed system length, the ITF peak occurs at the resonance frequency of the space where the perturbed flow passes. When applying the excitation to the jet flow, as the jet flow increases up to 56 slpm, the magnitude of ITF decreases, and ITF increases thereafter. Therefore the larger the velocity difference between the jet and the swirl flow, the larger the ITF. In the case of the swirl excitation, the ITF decreases as the jet flow increases because of the decrease of the energy with respect to the constant flow at the downstream. This difference is caused by the location of the hot wire anemometer on the downstream of the injector center axis.

In this study, we examined the movement of chlorophenol as a precursor of the dioxin in the after-combustion to minimize the creation and emission of dioxin in a municipal waste incinerator. The CPs was injected to the electric incinerator in temperature $300{\sim}500^{\circ}C$, using $N_2$ gas to control the reaction time, The oxygen quantity supplied into the $CP_s's$ isomer combustion was added with the value of experience formula. When the space velocity in reactor was 60~80/sec, the removal efficiency of CP was obtained in the presence of Mo-V catalyst and non catalyst. The efficiency in non-catalyst was 74% to 80% mono-CP, di-CP 55~66%, tri-CP 50~58%, while mono-CP 90~99.9%, di-CP 96~97%, tri-CP 76~99% in a catalyst. Consequently, it was shown that these were 20~30% more efficienct than those.

A regeneratively-cooled channel in a liquid rocket engine is used to effectively cool a combustion chamber inner wall from hot combustion gas, and the heat transfer/pressure loss characteristics should be predicted in advance to design cooling channels. In the present research, five cooling channels with different geometric dimensions were designed and the channels were respectively manufactured using cutter and endmill. By changing coolant velocity and downstream pressure, the effects of manufacturing method, channel shape, and flow condition on pressure losses were experimentally investigated and the results were compared with the analytical results. At same channel shape and flow condition, the pressure loss in the channel machined by the cutter was lower than that by the endmill. It was also found that the pressure loss ratio between the experimental result and the analytical data changed with the channel shape and flow condition.

In this study, the injector transfer function (ITF) of a gas-gas coaxial jet-swirl injector is measured by perturbing jet or swirl flow using a speaker as jet flow increases. As a result of measuring the ITF varying feed system length, a peak occurs at a resonance frequency of space where the perturbed flow passes. With jet excitation, the ITF magnitude decreases, but increases thereafter as increasing the jet flow. Therefore the larger the velocity difference between jet and swirl flow, the larger the ITF. With swirl excitation, ITF decreases as increasing the jet flow because of the energy decrease with respect to the constant downstream flow.

Since the rate and completeness of combustion in direct injection engines were controlled by the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays, an understanding of those was essential to the design of the direct injection engines. In this study the numerical simulations of injection pressure effects on the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays were preformed using the spray model that could predict the interactions between gas fields and spray droplets. The governing equations were discretized by the finite volume method and the modified k-.epsilon. model which included the compressibility effects due to the compression/expansion of piston was used. The results of the numerical calculation of the spray characteristics in the quiescent environment were compared with the experimental data. There were good agreements between the results of calculation and the experimental data, except in the early stages of the spray. In the motoring condition, the results showed that a substantial air entrainment into the spray volume was emerged and hence the squish motion was relatively unimportant during the fuel injection periods. It was found that as the injection pressure increased, the evaporation rate of droplets was decreased due to the narrow width of spray and the increased number of droplets impinged on the bottom of the piston bowl.

In this study, the operating characteristics of a small-scale pulse detonation engine (PDE) were investigated experimentally for application as a small thruster and an igniter. The PDE was constructed using commercial gas tubes with an inner diameter of 4.22 mm. The operating and detonation propagation characteristics of the PDE were investigated over the ranges of equivalence ratios and operating frequencies. Measured detonation speed was close to 10% of the theoretical CJ values at 1 Hz and 5 Hz conditions. However, unstable propagation characteristics were shown at 20 Hz and lean conditions, where the velocity deficit was increased by 20~62%.

This paper describes the scale effect of hybrid rocket motor which has blow-down oxidizer supply system. ResuIts show that the scale effect on regression rate is negligible using presently accessible scaling relation for $LN_2O$/PE propellant combination amid the absence of exactly proven scaling relation. It was also found that the characteristic velocity efficiency increases as motor scale increases. However, the characteristic velocity efficiency includes complicated parameters such as post-chamber configuration or geometry which can affect the entire flow field. It is therefore hard to conclude that the increase of efficiency is solely due to the enlargement of motor scale nor draw any conclusion on the scale effect which require a profound understanding of hybrid rocket scaling rules.
The characteristics of heat transfer from horizontal cylinder immersed in both a riser and downcomer of a circulating fluidized beds were investigated experimentally under different values of solids mass flux, superficial air velocity, particle size diameter, and different bed materials. The test results indicated that local heat transfer coefficients in both riser and downcomer are strongly influenced by angular position, and mass flux, as well as by particle size and bed materials. The local heat transfer coefficients around a circumference of the cylinder inside a riser and downcomer of a CFB exhibited a general tendency to increase with decreasing particle size and increasing solids mass flux and vary with different bed materials. Also the averaged heat transfer coefficient calculated from local heat transfer coefficient exhibited the same trend as a local i.e increase with decrease particle size and increasing solids mass flux and vary with varying bed materials. The general trend for a riser local heat transfer coefficient is decrease with increase angle until ${\Phi}$ = 0.5-0.6 (Where at angle =180$^{\circ}$${\Phi}$ =1). Also the general trend for a local heat transfer coefficient in downcomer is to increase with increase the angle until ${\Phi}$= ${\theta}/{\Pi}$ = 0.3-0.5 (Where at angle =180$^{\circ}$${\Phi}$ =1). Comparison the results of the heat transfer in the riser and downcomer of a circulating fluidized beds shows that they have approximately the same trend but the values of heat transfer coefficients in riser is higher than in downcomer.
