A Study on Combustion Characteristics of Non-Circular Grain in Hybrid Rocket for RATO (Rocket-Assisted Take Off) System (RATO(Rocket-Assisted Take Off) 시스템 적용을 위한 하이브리드 로켓 비단공형 연료 그레인 기초 연소특성 연구)

  • In an attempt to apply hybrid rocket to the RATO (Rocket-Assisted Take Off) system, combustion characteristics of the non-circular grain were figured out in this study. Having larger combustion area, it was reconfirmed that the non-circular grain has advantages over regression rate, characteristic velocity and chamber pressure in which all gave higher values. Experiments were performed to understand the effect of the non-circular grain geometry over time where local regression rates depending on grain location were analyzed. It was found that the regression rate of five distinct locations were different. Partial conclusion driven was that these differences are due to the heat transfer caused by dissimilar distances from the flame layer. Besides, as combustion duration increased, the fuel port became circular, and the regression rate converged to a single value over the whole grain.

  • High voltage AC electric field has been applied to turbulent propane jets to investigate the effect of electric field on liftoff characteristics. Liftoff velocity and liftoff height have been measured by varying the applied voltage and frequency. Liftoff velocities were delayed and liftoff heights were reduced by applying AC, not by DC. The electric effect became disappeared with further increasing jet velocities, which shows that the effect can be explained by the balance between inertia force and electric force. The flame stabilization effect was intensified as either applied voltage or frequency increased. Plasma streamers were generated between the flame and the jet under high voltage conditions. Liftoff velocity in the absence of plasma can be well correlated by the function of voltage and frequency.

  • The atomization characteristics of air-assist atomizer which is surrounded by a coflowing airstream is investigated. The air-assist, coflow air stream had swirl imparted to them in the same direction with 45 degree's angle swillers. The fuel and air entered the combustor at ambient temperature and the combustor was operated in an unconfined environment. Diesel fuel was used for all the experiments. Drop size and mean velocity are reported for certain distances downstream from the nozzle. The droplet size and velocity measurements were performed using a two-component phase/Doppler particle analyzer and velocity profiles across the entire flowfield are presented.

  • The pupose of this study is to measure droplet size and velocity simultaneously for a transient diesel fuel spray in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Generally, diesel combustion phenomena is mainly governed by characteristics of injection system and fuel spray. Therefore we need to clarify these characteristics for developing more economical diesel systems. In this study, correlation between droplet size and velocity was measured at downstream distance from nozzle. Governing parameters are pump speed and fuel quantity for the detailed nature in this transient diesel fuel spray. It is observed effect to the droplet size and velocity distribution. Velocity(peak, mean, rms), number density and droplet size were investigated simulaneously using PDA in the spray. Various results are presented to illustrate the effects of operation factors and correlation between the droplet diameter and velocity.

  • Waste Thermal Pyrolysis Melting process was proposed and has been studied in order to prevent air pollution by dioxin and fly ash generated from combustion process for disposal of waste. In this study, applicability as the fuel of diffusion burner of synthesis gas formed from Waste Thermal Pyrolysis process was addressed. Results showed that there is no big difference in the flame shape between MNDF and SNDF, and lift off was detected in MIDF but flame is more stable in SIDF which contains hydrogen with high combustion velocity as flow rate in first nozzle is increased. And radiation heat flux in inverse diffusion flame of synthesis gas was found to be more by 1.5 times than that in inverse diffusion flame of methane because of higher mole fraction of $CO_2$ with high emissivity in product gas.

  • In the present study, the combustion characteristics of methane and hydrogen-supplemented methane as alternative fuels for automotive vehicles were investigated at various hydrogen substitution rate, ignition position and ignition methods in a CVCC. The main results obtained from the study can be summarized as follow. In case of center ignition and neat methane-air mixture, the flame propagation processes are propagated with an elliptical shape, but they are changed an instable elliptical shape flame with very regular cells and higher velocity by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. In case of side, 0.5R ignition and neat methane-air mixture, the flame propagation processes are propagated with an instable elliptical shape flame, but they are changed from an instable elliptical shape to wedge shape flame with very irregular cells and higher velocity by increasing the hydrogen supplement rate. Although the flame propagation shape with ignition position and ignition devices was not differ, the flame area of MSCDI device was a little larger than it of CDI device at the same time.

  • To develop SEWGS (sorption enhanced water gas shift) system using dry $CO_2$ absorbent for pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture, hydrodynamic characteristics of $CO_2$ absorbents were measured and investigated. The minimum fluidization velocity of $CO_2$ absorbent was measured and the effects of the operating conditions were investigated to operate the system at bubbling fluidized bed condition. The minimum fluidization velocity decreased as pressure and temperature increased. Moreover, the minimum fluidization velocity decreased as column diameter increased. The effects of operating conditions on the solid circulation rate were measured and investigated to select appropriate operating conditions for continuous $CO_2$ capture and regeneration. The measured solid circulation rates were ranged between 10 and 65 kg/h and increased as the solid injection velocity, gas velocity in the regeneration reactor, and solid height increased.

Characteristics of in-cylinder flow near the spark-plug for different engine speeds (엔진속도 변화에 따른 연소실내 Spark Plug 주위의 유동특성 고찰)

  • Flows in the combustion chamber near the spark plug are measured using LDv.A single cylinder DOHC S.I. engine of compression ratio 9.5:1 with a transparent quartz window piston is used. Combustion chamber shape is semi-wedge type. Measured data are analyzed using the ensemble averaged analysis and the cycle resolved analysis which uses FFT Filtering. Turbulent intensity and mean velocity are studied in the main flow direction and the normal to main flow direction as a function of engine speeds. The results shows that the turbulent intensity obtained by the ensemble averaged analysis is greater than that calculated by the cycle resolved analysis. Especially, the ensemble averaged analysis shows increase in turbulence at the end of compression stroke although the cycle resolved analysis shows increase only in the cycle-by-cycle variation with no noticeable increase in turbulence. The mean velocity in the main flow direction increase as engine speed increase. But the mean velocity normal to the main flow does not show such increase. Turbulent intensity in both direction increase in proportion to engine speeds. The magnitude of turbulent intensity is about 0.3 ~ 0.4 times the mean piston speeds at the end of the compression stroke.

  • PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) is a recently developed technique for visualizing the fluid velocity fields. Because it has several advantages over the LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry), it became one of the most popular diagnostic tools in spite of its short history. However, its application to combustion is restricted by some problems such as flame illumination, scattered light refraction, particle density variation due to heat release, the combined effect of abrupt change in particle density and fluid velocity on flame contour, and thermophoresis which is particle lagging due to temperature gradient. These problems are expected to be originated from the non-continuous characteristics of flames and the limitations of particle dynamics. In the present study, these problems were considered for the visualization of the instantaneous coaxial hydrogen diffusion flame. And the instantaneous flame contour was detected using particle density difference. The visualized diffusion flame velocity field shows its turbulent and meandering nature. It was also observed that the flame is located inside the outer shear layer and flame geometry is largely influenced by the vorticity.

  • The characteristics of NOx emissions in pure hydrogen nonpremixed flames with coaxial air are analyzed numerically for the three model cases of coaxial air flames classified by varying coaxial air velocity and/or fuel velocity. In coaxial air flames, the flame length is reduced by coaxial air and can be represented as a function of the ratio of coaxial air to fuel velocity. Coaxial air decreases flame reaction zone, resulting in reducing flame residence time significantly. Finally, the large reduction of EINOx is achieved by the decrease of the flame residence time. It is found that because coaxial air can break down the flame self-similarity law, appropriate scaling parameters, which are different from those in the simple jet flames, are recommended. In coaxial air flames, the flame residence time based on the flame volume produces better results than that based on a cube of the flame length. And some portion of deviations from the 1/2 scaling law by coaxial air may be due to the violation of the linear relationship between the flame volume and the flame reaction zone.
