Torsional strength model of reinforced concrete members subjected to combined loads

  • This study aims at developing a torsional strength model based on a nonlinear analysis method presented in the previous studies. To this end, flexural neutral axis depth of a reinforced concrete section and effective thickness of an idealized thin-walled tube were formulated based on reasonable approximations. In addition, various sectional force components, such as shear, flexure, axial compression, and torsional moment, were considered in estimating torsional strength by addressing a simple and linear strain profile. Existing test results were collected from literature for verifications by comparing with those estimated from the proposed model. On this basis, it can be confirmed that the proposed model can evaluate the torsional strength of RC members subjected to combined loads with a good level of accuracy, and it also well captured inter-related mechanisms between shear, bending moment, axial compression, and torsion.

Characteristics of Pollution Loads from the Combined Sewer during Dry Season (무강우시 합류식 하수관거의 오염부하 특성)

  • We have examined the pollutant load of combined sewer in dry days. Two monitoring sites (C-1, C-2) were equipped with an flowmeter. Monitoring was conducted from September 2004 to April 2006 for 20 months during dry days. Flowrate and concentration of pollutants are lowest from 3 to 6 o'clock, and it is high at 9, 12 and 21 o'clock. Most of organic matters exist in the dissolved state. The results show that pollution loads in C-2 area were 4.5-7.2 times higher than in C-1. Pollutant loads were high on Saturdays. Pollutant loads (kg/ha/day) of C-2 were 1.1-3.1 times higher those of C-1. However there was no significant difference in winter. Analysis of correlation coefficient of water quality parameter indicates that besides of flowrate all items in C-1 site have tight relationship respectively (p<0.01). In C-2 site, correlation coefficient of TP-SS, TP-TN, TP-flowrate, BOD-flowrate, BOD-SS and TN-TP are statistically significant (p<0.01).

Analytical Study for Performance Improvement of Studs for Steel Plate Concrete(SC) Walls subjected to Combined Loads (조합하중을 받는 강판 콘크리트(SC) 벽체에서 스터드의 성능개선을 위한 해석적 연구)

  • This study analytically reviewed the behavior of Steel Plate Concrete(SC) walls subjected to combined loads of axial force, flexural moment, and shear force to investigate the effects of shape and arrangement spacing of studs on the behavior of SC walls. To perform it, 9 cases of finite element analyses considering the different shape and spacing of studs in SC wall were carried out. The results showed that, for SC walls combined steel plate and concrete according to the Design Code, the compressive strength is higher than the tensile strength. Compared results from the finite element analyses of SC walls subjected to combined loads with Design Code showed that all cases were higher than the design strength. For KEPIC SNG, the moment and shear force were not influenced by the axial force of 0.1 to 0.2 times axial strength, however, from the analyses, it was found that the values were decreased as the axial force is increased.

  • The critical buckling loads of unsymmetrically laminated rectangular plates with a given material system and subjected to combined lateral and inplane loads are maximized with respect to fiber orientations by using a sequential linear programming method together with a simple move-limit strategy. Significant influence of plate aspect ratios, central circular cutouts, lateral loads and end conditions on the optimal fiber orientations and the associated optimal buckling loads of unsymmetrically laminated plates has been shown through this investigation.

Application of PCSWMM for the Analysis of Water Quantity and Quality Considering CSOs (CSOs를 고려한 도시유역의 수량 및 수질 분석을 위한 PCSWMM 모형의 적용)

  • Combined sewer system (CSS) has been built in the most urban areas across the nation. During dry weather conditions, CSS works fine. But during heavy rain storms, combined sewage frequently overflows into the stream. This study simulated the hydrologic cycle and pollutant loads (BOD, SS, TN and TP) in the Mokgamcheon watershed considering combined sewer overflows (CSOs). PC storm water management model (PCSWMM) was used for continuous simulation and CSOs are considered using the flow divider. Sensitivity analysis, calibration and verification for water quantity and quality are carried out. To verify CSOs, field measurements of CSOs are compared with simulated results. As a result, 41.3% of precipitation flows into the stream directly and 1.1% of water supply flows into stream as CSOs. 6.5% of BOD total loads, 12.0% of SS, 13.6% of TP, and 29.2% of TN are from CSOs. This result will be effective to the integrated watershed management for sustainability.

Effects of Specimen Geometry on Stress Distribution in Sandwich Specimen Under Combined Loads (복합하중을 받는 샌드위치 시편의 응력분포에 미치는 시편 형상의 영향)

  • The effects of specimen geometry and loading conditions on the stress distribution in a sandwich specimen under combined loads are investigated by elastic finite element analysis. A commercial software NASTRAN is used in plain-strain two-dimensional finite element analysis of sandwich specimens; the analysis was performed for three different specimen shape factors and four different combined displacement conditions. The results of computational analysis suggest that the effect of the combined displacement angle, which is defined as the ratio of the shear displacement to the normal displacement, on the size of the non-homogeneous stress distribution is observed only in the case of the shear stress and von Mises stress. Also as the combined displacement angle increases, the size of the nonhomogeneous stress distribution decreases in the case of the shear stress and increases in the case of the von Mises stress. In addition, as the specimen shape factor, which is defined as the ratio of the specimen length to the height, increases, the size of the non-homogeneous stress distribution under combined displacement conditions decreases significantly.

  • Numerical studies are performed to investigate the behavior of flat plates under combined in-plane and out-of-plane loads. The numerical model is verified by comparison with experiments for plates simply supported on four edges. Through study on different load combination and loading sequence, the critical load condition that governs the strength of the flat plate is determined. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the buckling coefficient and the effective flexural rigidity so that the moment magnification method is applicable to the flat plates.

  • This paper is concerned with the family of parts that generally feature a central hub with radial protrusions. Radial Extrusion is usually used in order to produce complex parts, which is combined with upsetting and/or forward and backward extrusion. Typical parts that fall into this category include cross pieces for universal joints, key-shaft type parts, tube fittings, and differential gears. In this paper, the forming characteristics of radial extrusion combined with forward extrusion is investigated by comparing the punch and mandrel loads. The design factors during radial extrusion combined with forward extrusion are applied to the simulation to see how much those factors have effect on the forming loads. The rigid-plastic FEM is applied to the simulation.

Estimation of Solid Sediments Load by Sewer and Land Surface for Maintenance of Combined Sewer Systems (합류식 관거 유지관리를 위한 하수 및 지표면 고형물 부하량 산정)

  • The deposition of solids in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. In order to solve these problems and proper pipe management, estimation of solid loads from sewer and surface in a drainage basin is needed but this task is very difficult and extremely expensive. In this study, generalized procedures for estimating sewer solid loads during dry weather in combined sewer systems and for estimating solid loads on surface in a drainage basin developed by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency were applied and analyzed in Gunja drainage basin in Korea. As result, the estimated solid loads from sewer and surface are 205.8,759kg/yr and 1,321,993kg/yr respectively, and total solid loads is 1,527,752kg/yr. The estimated solid removal from street cleaning, dredging from pipe system and pumping house is 1,486,636kg/yr. Therefore, the applied methods show resonable results. More reliable estimation can be achieved if long-term measurements and adjustment of estimation equations are carried out, and this estimation methods can be used usefully for the management of combined sewer system with reduction of cost and effort.

A study on the optimal configuration of harbor structure under the combined loads

  • Response of harbor structure to environmental loads such as wave load, impact load, ship's contacting load, is a fundamental factor in designing of the structure's optimal configuration. In this paper, typical environmental loads against coastal structures are investigated for designing of the optimal harbor structure. Loads to be considered here are wave load, impact load and contacting load due to ship mooring. Statistical analysis for several harbor structure types under the corresponding loads is carried out, followed by investigation of effect of individual environmental load. Based on these, the optimal configuration for the harbor structure is obtained after considerable engineering process. Estimation of contacting load of the ship is suggested using effective energy concepts for the load, and analysis of structural behavior is done for the optimal designing of the structure in the particular load. A guideline for the design process of the harbor structure is established, and safety of the structure is examined by proposed scheme. For verification of the analytical approach, various steel-piled coastal structures and caissons are chosen and relevant structural analyses are carried out using the Finite Element Methods combined with MIDAS/GTS and ANSYS code. It is found using the Morison equation that impact load cannot be a major load in the typical harbor structure compared with the original wave load, and that configuration shape of the structure may play an important role in consideration of the response criteria.
