Forming processes and the Value of the Natural Heritage of the Guksubawi in Ulleung Island, Korea (울릉도 국수바위 주상절리의 형성과정과 자연유산적인 가치)

  • Trachytic cliff showing a unique appearance like noodle is located in the Mt. Bipa, Seo-myeon, Ulleung island. This cliff is named 'Guksubawi'(means noodle-like rock) by its appearance. There is cliffs on three sides except north side and each side shows semi-vertical columnar joints obviously. This columnar joint has different character in appearance and mineralogy according to their direction and this tendency is remarkable in contrast between the east side and the west side. The consideration of the cooling processes after eruption of trachytic lava based on the contrast of both columnar joints dealt in the full text. In the morphological approach, the columnar joint on the east side has narrower space and chisel-like marks than the west side. And the joint walls are sharper on the east side than west side too. In the mineralogical approach, then, trachyte on the west side has bigger phenocrysts than the east side and is showing glomeroporphyritic texture and weak trachytic textures of lath of plagioclase. Around these differences between the east side and the west side, it modelled the typical temperature gradient while the cooling processes of hot rocks and the east side, consequently, corresponds to exterior of the entire trachytic volume. The columnar joint of the Guksubawi has the value of landscape and scientific importance about the forming processes of the columnar joint of trachytic lava, and so supposed it has enough values to preserved as natural heritage.

Evaluation of the Stability of Ipseok-dae Columnar Joints in Mudeungsan National Park Using 3DEC (3DEC을 이용한 무등산국립공원 입석대 주상절리대의 안정성 평가)

  • Numerical analysis performed to predict the behavior of Ipseok-dae columnar joints in Mudeungsan National Park to understand their stability and movement. The numerical analysis technique, 3DEC, is based on the discrete element method that can analysis discontinuities. The analysis used data for material properties derived from laboratory tests, which found that average density was 2.68 kN/m3, average normal stiffness was 3.15 GPa/m, average shear stiffness was 1.00 GPa/m, average cohesion was 0.51 MPa, and the average friction angle was 33°. The Ipseok-dae columnar joints were modeled on the basis of the field survey data for 15 joints located between the observation platform and the hiking trail. The numerical analysis assessed the behavior of each columnar joint by interpreting the displacement of the edges of its upper and lower surfaces. The greatest maximum displacement was found in columnar joint No. 6, and the greatest minimum displacement was found in joint No. 11. Analyzing the movements of five discontinuities in joint No. 11 indicated that the maximum displacement occurred at the 2nd level. The other levels were ordered 5th, 4th, 1st, and 3rd in terms of subsequent greatest displacements. Considering the total displacement in the 15 studied joints, the Ipseok-dae columnar joints are judged to be stable. However, considering the cultural and historical value of Mudeungsan National Park, it is regarded that the currents slope stability should be maintained by monitoring the individual rock blocks of the joints.

Thin Film Growth and Evaluation Method for Conventional Co-Cr Based Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Media: Problems and New Solutions

  • We proposed a novel method to evaluate the magnetic properties of the initial layer and the columnar structure separately for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media. We show that the thickness of the initial layer and the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of columnar structure can be quantitatively evaluated using the plotted product of perpendicular anisotropy to magnetic film thickness versus magnetic film thickness ($K_{u{\bot}}^{ex{p.}}$ $\times$ d$_{mag.}$ vs. d$_{mag.}$ plot). Based on the analyses, it is found that: (1) compared with CoCrPtTa media, CoCrPtB media have relatively thin initial layer, and have fine grains with homogeneous columnar structure with c-plane crystallographic orientation; (2) CoCrPtB media can be grown epitaxially on Ru or CoCr/C intermediate layer, and as the result, the magnetic properties of the media within thin thickness region of d$_{mag.}$ $\leq$ 20 nm is significantly improved; (3) the key issue of material investigation for CoCr-based perpendicular recording media will be focused on how to fabricate c-plane-oriented columnar grains well isolated with nonmagnetic substance in epitaxial-growth media, while maintaining the thermal stability of the media.

  • In the goby Micropercops swinhonis, the development of its egg's enveloping layers could be divided into 4 stages. In the earliest developmental period, stage I, there is a simple oocyte surrounded by a layer of squamous follicular cells. Stage II corresponds to the yolk vesicle stage of vitellogenesis. Here the initial follicular layer has become bilaminar with the retention of its outer squamous cell layer and the acquisition of an inner cuboidal cell layer just over the zona radiata. The number and size of the cuboidal cells increases throughout this stage. Stage III corresponds to the yolk granule stage of true vitellogenesis. Here the cuboidal cells begin to be replaced by columnar cells. As the oocyte grows, the columnar cells increase in size. The columnar cells produce cytoplasmic neutral mucins and by the end of this stage their cytoplasm has been filled with this mucin. In stage IV a single layer of squamous cells still remained as the outer follicular layer of the oocyte. The secretory activity of the inner follicular layers' columnar cells has ceased and they had lost their cell wall integrity and ended as a series of bullet-shaped, neutral mucin deposits.

  • [ $MgB_2$ ] films grown by hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition under appropriate growth conditions commonly exhibit columnar grain structure. The grain boundaries between adjacent columnar grains have been reported to be good flux pinning centers. In this work, we measured the angular dependence of critical current density ($J_c$) and observed the enhanced flux pinning when an external magnetic field was aligned parallel to the columnar direction. This $J_c$ was almost comparable to the $J_c$ for intrinsic pinning case up to 1 T at low temperatures, indicating that grain boundary pinning is very effective. At high fields, however, $J_c$ decreased rapidly resulting from the fact that the density of flux pinning centers provided by grain boundaries was outnumbered by the flux density.

Microstructural investigation of the electroplating Cu thin films for ULSI application (ULSI용 Electroplating Cu 박막의 미세조직 연구)

  • Electroplating Cu was deposited on Si(100) wafer after seed Cu was deposited by sputtering first. TaN was deposited as a diffusion barrier before depositing the seed Cu. Electroplating Cu thin films show highly (111)-oriented microstructure for both before and after annealing at $450^{\circ}C$ for 30min and no copper silicide was detected in the same samples, which indicates that TaN barrier layer blocks well the Cu diffusion into silicon substrate. After annealing the electroplating Cu film up to $450^{\circ}C$, the Cu film became columnar from non-columnar, its grain size became larger about two times, and also defects density of stacking faults, twins and dislocations decreased greatly. Thus the heat treatment will improve significantly electromigration property caused by the grain boundary in the Cu thin films.

  • The most important part of the fabrication solar cells is the anti-reflection coating when excludes the kinds of silicon substrates (crystalline, polycrystalline, or amorphous), patterns and materials of electrodes. Anti-reflection coatings reduce the reflection of sunlight and at last increase the intensity of radiation to inside of solar cells. So, we can obtain increase of solar cell efficiency about 10% using anti-reflection coating. There are many kinds of anti-reflection film for solar cell, such as SiN, $SiO_2$, a-Si, and so on. And, they have two functions, anti-reflection and passivation. However such materials could not perfectly prevent reflection. So, in this work, we investigated the anti-reflection coating with the columnar structure ZnO thin film. We synthesized columnar structure ZnO film on glass substrates. The ZnO films were synthesized using a RF magnetron sputtering system with a pure (99.95%) ZnO target at room temperature. The anti-reflection coating layer was sputtered by argon and oxygen gases. The angle of target and substrate measures 0, 20, 40, 60 degrees, the working pressure 10 mtorr and the 250 W of RF power during 40 minutes. The confirm the growth mechanism of ZnO on columnar structure, the anti-reflection coating layer was observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The optical trends were observed by UV-vis and Elleso meter.

  • This study was conducted in order to obtain the information of the histological changes in each of six segments of the epididymal ducts in Korean native goats. Thirty-two Korean native male goats were examined, dividing into seven groups, at 4 weeks intervals from 8 to 32 weeks of age. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The epididymal ducts showed histologically an abrupt growth at the age of 16 weeks being followed by almost full maturation at the age of 24 weeks. Diameter of the cauda was steadily larger than that of the caput and corpus of the epididymal ducts. 2. Spermatozoa in the lumen of epididymal ducts were first observable at the age of 16 weeks, thereafter showing sparse in the lumen of caput, whereas most dense in the lumen of cauda in the density of spermatozoa. 3. Ducts in the caput and corpus were lined by ciliated columnar epithelium until the age of 12 weeks, and later by pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium which was composed of ciliated columnar cells, clear cells and basal cells. Ducts of cauda epididymis were lined by simple ciliated columnar epithelia until 12 weeks of age and later by simple or pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, and two types of ducts (small ducts with high epithelium and large ducts with lower epithelium) were noted. Nucleus of the epithelial cells in the caput were located in the base of cells but in the corpus and cauda, those were located in the mid part of cells. cilia were most developed in the epithelia of the corpus.

A study on the vacuum brazing of carbon steels to a stainless steel (탄소강과 스테인리스강의 진공브레이징에 관한 연구)

  • Vacuum brazing is the most modern brazing process and is at present, far from being completely understood. By brazing under high vacuum, in an atmosphere free of oxidizing gases, a superior product with greater strength, ductility and uniformity can be obtained. In this study, the influence of brazing parameters such as base metal characteristics, joint clearance and brazing time were described in relation to the metallurgical phenomena and shear strength of vacuum-brazed joints between carbon steels and 304 stainless steel (SUS 304) brazed by copper filler metal. In copper brazing of SUS 304 to a medium carbon steel(M.C.S) the columnar Fe-Cr-Ni-Cu-C alloy structure was formed and grew from the M.C.S side and at the same time, the surface of M.C.S. was decarbonized. The driving force for the formation and growth of columnar structure was the difference of carbon content between base metals. As the joint clearance is narrower and brazing time is longer, the formation and growth of columnar phase and decarburization of carbon steels were more noticeable. Because of decarburization of carbon steels, the shear strength of brazed joints were reduced as the formation of columnar structure was increased.

Effect of Centrifugal Casting Thickness on the Mechanical Properties and the Microstructure of Alloy 625 (Alloy 625의 특성과 조직에 미치는 원심주조품 두께의 영향)

  • The effect of thickness on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of centrifugal cast 625 was investigated. Centrifugal cast 625 with various thickness of 10, 17 and 50mm showed partially columnar grained structure 8, 12.3 and 18.5mm respectively from the outer surface. Secondary dendrite arm spacing in the columnar grains slightly increased with increasing casting thickness. Tensile strength of the columnar region was similar regardless of casting thickness. Solidification behavior of the columnar grained region is similar to that of directional solidification, thus solidification rate in the centrifugal cast tube was extrapolated from the secondary dendrite arm spacing data of the directionally solidified material. The equiax grained region formed interior of the thick castings. The tensile strength of the equiaxed region showed the average value of the columnar region which is presumably originated from the grain structure rather than secondary dendrite arm spacing.
