  • Histogram Equalization (HE) method is widely used for contrast enhancement. However, HE often introduce washed out appearance or color distortion due to the over enhancement in contrast. In this paper, Dynamic Range Separate Histogram Equalization (DRSHE) is proposed for contrast enhancement. DRSHE reconfigures the dynamic range of histogram using probability distribution ratio. The experimental results show that DRSHE suppresses the washed out appearance or color distortion and preserves naturalness of the original image compared with conventional methods.

  • This paper presents an adaptive retinex algorithm using skewness for contrast enhancement of color images. In order to estimate the degree of low contrast of an image, skewness of luminance of an observed image is used to define a parameter, and a non-linear function is proposed to compensate the reflectance using the parameter and estimated reflectance. In addition, determination of gain and offset of the non-linear function is addressed using statistics of the estimated reflectance. The relation between an observed luminance and the compensated luminance is used to compensate color components with the reduction of computational cost. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has the capability to effectively improve the contrast without color distortion.

  • With the rapid development of deep learning, Depth Map Super-Resolution (DMSR) method has achieved more advanced performances. However, when the upsampling rate is very large, it is difficult to capture the structural consistency between color features and depth features by these DMSR methods. Therefore, we propose a color-image guided DMSR method based on iterative depth feature enhancement. Considering the feature difference between high-quality color features and low-quality depth features, we propose to decompose the depth features into High-Frequency (HF) and Low-Frequency (LF) components. Due to structural homogeneity of depth HF components and HF color features, only HF color features are used to enhance the depth HF features without using the LF color features. Before the HF and LF depth feature decomposition, the LF component of the previous depth decomposition and the updated HF component are combined together. After decomposing and reorganizing recursively-updated features, we combine all the depth LF features with the final updated depth HF features to obtain the enhanced-depth features. Next, the enhanced-depth features are input into the multistage depth map fusion reconstruction block, in which the cross enhancement module is introduced into the reconstruction block to fully mine the spatial correlation of depth map by interleaving various features between different convolution groups. Experimental results can show that the two objective assessments of root mean square error and mean absolute deviation of the proposed method are superior to those of many latest DMSR methods.

  • A novel Color Image Saturation enhancement method to strengthen video images without producing oversaturated or color contour artifacts is proposed in this paper. Based on the luminance information, the relations between luminance levels and maximum chrominance vectors in each subcolor are generated for each pixel, so that the upper bound of the allowed saturation factor for a pixel can be derived, and much vivid video image can be achieved

  • In modern days, many of the images are captured by using various devices, such as PDA, digital camera, or cell phone camera. Because all these devise have a limited dynamic range, images captured in real world scenes with high dynamic ranges usually exhibit poor visibility and low contrast, which may make important image features lost or hard to tell by human viewers. In this paper, the efficient color image enhancement method is presented. Experimental result show that the proposed method yields better performance of color enhancement over the previous work for test color images.

  • In this paper, we describe an effective method to enhance the color night images with spatio-temporal multi-scale retinex focused to the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications such as in the single CCD based Electronic Toll Collection System (ETCS). The basic spatial retinex is known to provide color constancy while effectively removing local shades. However, it is relatively ineffective in night vision enhancement. Our proposed method, STMSR, exploits the iterative time averaging of image sequences to suppress the noise in consideration of the moving vehicles in image frame. In the STMSR method, the spatial term makes the dark images distinguishable and preserves the color information day and night while the temporal term reduces the noise effect for sharper and clearer reconstruction of the contents in each image frame. We show through representative simulations that incorporating both terms in the modeling produces the output sequential images visually more pleasing than the original dim images.

  • We employed the high-pressure high temperature (HPHT) process to enhance the colors of natural sapphires to obtain a vivid blue. First, we analyze the content of the coloring agent $Fe_2O_3$ using the wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) method. The HPHT procedure operates under 1 GPa at various temperatures of 1700, 1750, and $1800^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes using a cubic press. We determine the color changes using the optical microscopic images, UV-VIS near-infrared (NIR) spectra, micro-Raman spectra, and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectra for all sapphire samples before and after the treatment. The optical microscopic results indicate that the HPHT process can enhance the sapphire color to a vivid blue at temperatures above $1750^{\circ}C$. The UV-VIS-NIR spectra identify the color changes explicitly and quantitatively through providing the Lab color scales and color differences. Both results demonstrate that the colors of natural sapphires can be enhanced to a vivid blue using the HPHT process above $1750^{\circ}C$ under 1 GPa for 5 minutes.

  • In this paper, we propose the digital image enhancement method including local tone reproduction and preservation of the hue. In recent studies, an integrated multi-scale retinex (IMSR) has produced great naturalness in the resulting images through enhancement of visibility in dark area in input images. However, most methods, including IMSR, work in RGB color spaces. As such, this produces hue distortion from the perspective of the human visual system, that is, hue distortion in CIELAB color space. Accordingly, this paper proposes an tone reproduction and enhancement of saturation method in a device-independent color space, CIELAB, to preserve the hue and obtain a high contrast and naturalness. First, to achieve the desired objectives, the IMSR is then applied to only the $L^*$ values in CIELAB color space, normalization, and simple mapping function, thereby preserving the balance of the color components and enhancement of visibility. Then, saturation adjustment is performed by applying the ratio of the chroma variation at the sRGB gamut boundary according to the corrected luminance. In experiments, the proposed method is shown to improve the visibility in dark shadows and bright regions in the resulting images and reduce any color distortion then preference test are performed.

  • The color enhancement of natural ruby produced from Mong Hsu were carried out by the heat treatment using gas diffusion. The natural ruby in this paper has a colored patch of which the color ranges from blue to a color close to black. The most favorable heat treatment conditions were as follows; range of temperature $1400~1600^{\circ}C$, duration 12 hrs, $O_2$ atmosphere. The color tone of ruby obtained under the optimum conditions was overall clear red by partial removal of colored patch. From EPMA results, part of blue or black colored patch within ruby were found to occur by charge transfer between $Fe^{2+}{\;}and{\;}Ti^{4+}$ . These results are consistent with the XRF that contents of $Fe(Fe^{2+}{\;}or{\;}Fe^{3+}$) and $Ti^{4+}$ ion to cause a blue or black colored patch after heat treatment became slightly less than with non-treated ruby. The silk formed on the surface of ruby heat treated for 12 hrs at $1700^{\circ}C$ were found to be generated by re-crystallization of rutile $TiO_2$ by XPS analysis.
