The spent coffee grounds (SCG) are considered valuable by-products because they contain various bioactive compounds. The SCG extraction (SCGE) was irradiated at doses ranging between 30 and 50 kGy. The deep dark-brown color of SCGE was changed to a bright yellow color by gamma irradiation. The content of the bioactive compounds of gamma-irradiated SCGE was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Interestingly, the content of quinic acid was increased by gamma irradiation, whereas other compounds were decreased. Although the contents of bioactive compounds were changed by gamma irradiation, the biological activities (radical scavenging activity and whitening effects) of SCGE were unaffected. Our findings suggest that gamma irradiation can effectively improve the color values of SCGE without the loss of biological activities. Consequently, gamma irradiation can be a useful tool for improving the utilization of SCGE in the cosmetic industry.

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) has been used since ancient times to improve various skin diseases such as burns, wounds, and eczema. It has been reported that Aloe vera contains vitamin, enzyme, mineral, sugar, phenolic compound, fatty acid and amino acid. Aloe vera changes its color from green to red under the extreme thermal and arid climate to protect itself. These morphological changes induce variation of composition such as increasing of aloe-emodin content. Aloe-emodin is one of the major anthraquinone in aloe family plants. Since aloe-emodin contains a polyphenolic structure, this compound may be responsible for the reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of aloe. However, there is no research on the process of increasing the compounds of Aloe vera. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a pink aloe manufacturing process that increases the aloe-emodin content and enhances the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of aloe. As a result of heating aloe under appropriate conditions, pink aloe increased aloe-emodin content compared to general aloe, and exhibited effects such as increasing antioxidant activity, inhibiting NO production, and promoting cell regeneration. Through this study, the applicability of pink aloe as a new anti-aging material in the cosmetic field was confirmed.

Skin has a strong barrier function to protect the body from external harmful factors. This strong barrier function of the skin makes for any effective substance difficult to permeate through the skin. The purpose of this study was to evaluate skin permeability of the reduced particle size by non-invasive method. The particles were prepared by high-pressure emulsification. The niacinamide prepared in a high-pressure emulsification was absorbed 1.56 times higher than the control sample. In addition, it was found from the sixth layer of keratin that was removed by tape-stripping method. This was significantly deeper penetration. The whitening efficacy of the sample containing niacinamide was evaluated before and after 6 weeks of use. The skin color was significantly improved in both pigmented area and non-pigmented area. Through this study, it was possible to visually and quantitatively confirm the permeability confirm the permeability of the reduced particle sample into skin.

The moisturizing effect and stability of a cream containing 0.25 % Inula britannica flower ethyl acetate fraction were investigated. The pH, viscosity, and absorbance were measured under 4 different temperature conditions(4, 20, 37, and $45^{\circ}C$) and under the sun light at 2 week intervals for 12 weeks. The variations in pH and viscosity of all experimental creams were similar to those of control cream. The absorbance variations of the extract from experimental cream at 330 nm were in the order: under the sun > 45 > 37 > 25 > $4^{\circ}C$. It shows that ethyl acetate fraction in the cream can be oxidized under the sun. In addition, any change in color or smell was not observed through 12 weeks of the experimental period. These results showed that the cream were stable. Accordingly, it is suggested that further study is needed to provide more information to the manufacturers, who are seeking for the application of the extract to improve the anti-oxidant and antibacterial activities and stability of cosmetic products.

The skin is one of the largest organs in our body and participates in many of the human organism's physiological and pathological events. Skin function were known for self-maintenance and self-repair, mechanical and chemical stress protection, protection against UV and environmental pathogenic micro-organisms, production of vitamin D, and social and psychological function through the physical aspect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the variation of biophysical parameters and to find relation with skin biomarkers in different anatomical site and age in Korean women. About 70 healthy volunteers in age range 20 to 49 were participated in this test. Test areas were the forearms and the cheek. Investigation to determine biophysical parameters on human skin, was carried out using various non-invasive methods. For analysis to skin biomarkers, we studied to examine various biomarkers for the quantitative determination of cortisol, fibronectin, keratin-1, 10, and 11, involucrin, and keratin-6 in human face and forearm. And we measured to skin biophysical parameters for skin anatomical site and age difference with non-invasive methods. As results of measuring site, some parameters were have following significant difference, stratum corneum hydration, trans epidermal water loss and skin color (L and a value). As results of age difference, skin colors were had only significant difference with age. For cortisol, keratin-6, fibronectin, keratin-1, 10, 11 contents, there were no significant difference in age and site. However, involucrin level in the cheeks were the highest for age group 30 ~ 39 compared to other age groups. These results suggest that in individual skin condition may explain detailed skin state variation.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is a major cause of skin photoaging, and effective UV protecting agents are needed for the skin health and beauty. This study was undertaken to examine the effects of Bambusae caulis in Taeniam extract (BCTE) on UVB-induced cell death, oxidative stress and matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1) expression in cell-based assays. HaCaT human keratinocytes were exposed to UVB in the presence of BCTE at different concentrations and resulting changes in cell viability and biochemical events were determined. The results showed that BCTE enhanced the viabilities of UVB-exposed cells, and attenuated apoptotic events such as cleavage of procaspase 3 to its active form, and the increase of Bax to Bcl-2 ratios. BCTE also attenuated the reactive oxygen generation and lipid peroxidation in cells exposed to UVB. Additionally, it attenuated the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 1 and the phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase stimulated by UVB. Conclusively, the present study demonstrated that BCTE pro tected skin cells from the UVB-induced cell death, oxidative stress and MMP1 expression, suggesting its potential use as a cosmetic ingredient mitigating some features of the skin photoaging.

Pearlescent pigments have been widely used in cosmetic applications. Up to date; the most widely used pearl effect pigment is the mica-based pigment, which uses natural mica as the substrate that is in turn coated with metal of oxide interference layer. However, when natural mica is employed as a base material the final product often has a yellowish color, mainly due to the fact that natural mica contains low levels of iron as an impurity[1,2]. This study was focused on developing a pearl pigment which might have a similar sparkling effect as snow. This effect was found to be due to its structure and purity, and this concept was also applied to development of our pearl pigments. More specifically, this invented pearl effect pigments are the mixture of glass-flake and glass-flake coated metal oxides and present the optical properties of snow matrix such as refractive index and particle size, unlike only the glass-flake or glass-flake coated metal oxides to be applied in. Using base material having similar physical properties (refractive index and particle size) as snow matrix as platelet for pearl effect pigments, these invented pigments present a three-dimensional glittering effect of the snow matrix. With this invented figments an applied; we achieved the beauty of snow crystal from makeup products containing these pigments.

In this study, the stability of cream containing the ethyl acetate fraction of C. obtusa leaf extract was evaluated. The pH, viscosity, and absorbance were measured under the 4 different temperatures (4, 25, 37 and $45^{\circ}C$) and under the sun light during the 12 weeks. The control cream without containing the extract did not show pH change under the different temperatures mentioned above. However, the pH of the cream with the extract was decreased 0.11 at $4^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. Under the $37^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$ and sun light condition, the pH was decreased 0.55, 0.84 and 0.59, respectively. After treating the cream for 12 weeks under the different temperatures, the viscosity was measured for the cream containing the extract and control cream. The values were decreased by 2,404 cPs in average compared to the initial value for the former and control cream were decreased by 1,296 cPs in average for the latter. On the other hand, the viscosity of control cream treated under the $45^{\circ}C$ for 12 weeks was decreased (1,915 cPs) relative to the cream containing the extract, which showed 3,810 cPs decrease in viscosity. The cream containing the extract did not show absorbance change at $4^{\circ}C{\sim}37^{\circ}C$ for 12 weeks. Instead, the absorbance of the cream treated under $45^{\circ}C$ and sun light condition was decreased 32.5 % and 35.2 %, respectively. This decrease in absorbance is relatively small compared to the 54.8 % decrease of the extract sampled from the cream using ethanol solution. This indicates that the extract is stabilized in the cream. In addition, any change in color or smell was not observed through 12 weeks of the experimental time period. Also physical changes as creaming and cohesion were not shown. The results show that the cream containing C. obtusa leaf extract was relatively stable. However, it is concluded that it is still not clear in the stability of the cream containing the extract when it is stored for a long time. Accordingly, it is suggested that further study is needed for the application of the extract to cosmetics.
The present study researched morphological characteristics and analyzed the genetic diversity by using RAPD in Calanthe species, native plant in Jeju, Korea. Twenty-six samples were selected by flower color, and 19 horticultural traits were investigated to study morphological characteristics. The C. discolor had the smallest leaf, the length and width of dorsal sepal, lateral sepal, petal, central lip, lateral lip, and flower stalk length were shortest and/or smallest except the spur and ovary length in Calanthe species, but those of Calanthe discolor for. sieboldii (Dence.) Ohwi (Calanthe discolor for. sieboldii) were the largest and/or biggest, and those of variants were the intermediate between C. discolor and C. discolor for. sieboldii, but spur length was the longest in C. discolor, the shortest in C. discolor for. sieboldii, and intermediate in the variants. Ovary length in C. discolor was shortest and C. discolor for. sieboldii and variants were similar with each other. The flower colors of C. discolor were brownish red, the value of CIE Lab was between 40 and 50. The flower color of C. discolor for. sieboldii was yellowish; the value of CIE Lab was between 110 and 130. And variants had various colors between 50 and 70 in the value of CIE Lab. After analyzing multiple band patterns of PCR products, 154 bands were selected as polymorphic RAPD markers. The analysis of Genetic distance of Calanthe species using RAPD showed that C. discolor and C. discolor for. sieboldii are more distant from each other than variants, and demonstrated the fact that genetic position of variants is between the other two species.

This study is to enhance the competitiveness of the domestic cosmetic industry and provide basic materials needed for a design idea by analyzing perfume bottles designed by Rene Lalique. The methods of this study are documentary research and demonstrative research. The documentary research considered the theoretical background with a focus on related domestic and international literature, previous research, and Internet materials. The demonstrative research extracted photo materials of the bottle designs of Lalique from domestic and international web sites along with literature that classified them into shapes, colors, materials, and patterns that analyzed the general characteristics and chronologic changes. The results of this study are as follows. The curve-oriented shape was common and multi-colors were used more frequently than a single color in the 1910's. Colorless-transparent glass and a flower patterns were used frequently for materials and patterns, respectively. Lalique reflects this style in his bottle designs because the Art Nouveau effect in the 1910's. In the 1920's, curved and straight shapes had a similar percentage. The use of multi-colors and one type of glass bottle increased versus the 1910's. Similar to the 1910's, a flower pattern was used most frequently. This suggests that Lalique was influenced by the established Art Nouveau and was also interested in the Art Deco style, In the 1930's, an organic curved shape was common. Unlike the 1910's and 1920's, a single color was more common than multi-colors. The one type of glass bottle and a geometric pattern were common for materials and patterns, respectively. The Art Deco style was reflected in the bottle design of Lalique in the 1930's.
