  • Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of congenital and age-related color vision deficiencies over a wide range of ages among residents in two urban communities of Kyeonggi-Do. Methods: A total of 935 subjects, consisting of 452 males and 483 females, participated in this study. Lanthony D-15 desaturated panels test were used to assess color vision. Results: Prevalence of color vision deficiency was 4.81% for total, 6.64% for males and 3.11% for females. Congenital color vision deficiency was 3.54% for males and 0.41% for females. Tritan deficiency, which was the post-natal age-related, was 2.99% (3.32% for males, and 2.69% for females). Conclusions: The result imply that color vision deficiencies is influenced by age. As an age-related color vision deficiencies, Tritan is most frequently found in the age group over 50.

  • Up to 10% of the global population suffers from color vision deficiency (CVD) [1], especially deuteranomaly and protanomaly, the conditions in which it is difficult to discriminate between red and green hues. For those who suffer from CVD, their career fields are restricted, and their childhood education is frustrating. There are many optical eye glasses on the market to compensate for this disability. However, although they are attractive due to their light weight, wearing these glasses will decrease visual brightness and cause problems at night. Therefore, this paper presents a supplementary device that comprises a head-mounted display and an image sensor. With the aid of the image processing technique of digital color space adjustment implemented in a high-speed field-programmable gate array device, the users can enjoy enhanced vision through the display without any decrease in brightness.

  • This paper presents a mobile color-compensating application using a RGB color compensation algorithm. The proposed application enables color vision deficiencies to differentiate images which cannot be distinguished by them. The suggested mobile application has two functions: converting images taken by camera and converting contents in the device screen. The proposed application is computationally inexpensive, since it does not require color space transformation. Simulation results show that the proposed application enables color vision deficiencies to receive information expressed by colors such as subway line maps.

  • While there are about 1 million color vision deficiencies in Korea, an assistive technology to digital contents of broadcasting and web for them remains scarce. In this study, we developed a generation method of the ICC profile to correct a graphic digital content adapted to various color perception characteristics of CVD by tuning the correction rules of the ICC profile by themselves. We tested the performance of the ICC profile to apply 10 Ishihara plates to the participants, 1 protanomaly, 1 protanomaly and deuteranomaly and 2 deuteranomaly. We used the color range information to build correction rules. Results of the test show that they passed Ishihara test by 97.5% success rate, compared to 20% success rate without it. The average time for them to spend to tune the customized ICC profile was about 13 minute without any diagnosis of specialist, any special instrument.
