Estimation of surface color with use of subjective feeling: On the influence of contrast by complementary color

  • The unique colors of paper, that is, blue, green, red, and yellow were used in the estimation of color from the subjective feeling. The monochrome with unique color or the unique color surrounded with the background color was presented. Subject gazed the monochrome or the unique color, which was called target color. The target and background color were the complementary color each other. The various ratios of the area of gazed color and background were taken. Subject answered the level of subjective feeling consisted of pair of adjective items for unique color presented. With the use of the subjective feeling fer the target color presented, the estimation of the unique color was carried out due to Fuzzy theory and neural networks. The results of color difference between unique color presented and the estimated color gave very small value for the case without background, while the results of the case with background color depended on the ratio of area of presented color and background color till the ration of 2:1, The relation showed the Kirschman's law. The color difference saturated in the increase of area of background with the ratio more than 2:1.

  • In this paper, we present a new LED (Light Emitting Diode) mood lighting system interacting with smartphones based on the generation of different light sequences. In the proposed system, one light sequence is considered to be one unit of the service contents, which is then transmitted through a network and played in an LED lighting system. To this end, we propose a novel generation scheme using a smartphone, and a decoding/playing mechanism in an LED lighting system. The lighting sequences have a fixed period divided into predefined time units. Two modes - basic and interpolation - are supported in each time unit when playing a color sequence. In the basic mode, the color is maintained for the entire time unit, whereas in the interpolation mode the color is interpolated. The sequence is decoded and played in the lighting circuit by changing the duty cycle of a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal. A demonstration system of the overall proposed method was using smartphones, a server and an LED lighting system. The results from this experiment show the validity and applicability of the proposed scheme.

  • This study investigates the color of daily clothes of middle era of Yi dynasty by examining the color of excavated clothing which was the real clothes in 16th and 17th centuries. The purposes of this study lie in understanding emotional feeling observed by exact measurement of the color of the excavated and devising a method of reserving the color of the excavated by inspecting the discolored color of the excavated. For this, the color difference was measured by color measuring system. Minolta Chroma-meter, and then recorded in L*a*b system. The 3-dimensional color difference was observed by analyzing these data on Methmetica and change in color with ageing was assessed by reconstructing the color by Phoposhop. The color construction of daily clothes of middle era of the Chosun Dynasty was founded on a philosophy, and it was made up of colors such as white, brown, and blue. This color construction seemed to be based on the philosophy of naturalism symbolizing surrounding nature, e.g., white symbolizes Bak-sasang(bak-philosophy) and blue implies Eumyangohangsul.

  • Rapid social changes and scientific advances of the $21^{th}c$ have brought on a major paradigm shift towards consilience, making boundaries more or less irrelevant. In the field of architecture, this is manifested in the emergence of colors that can be described as 'being aleatory', 'non-formal', 'non-deterministic' and 'perpetually evolving'. Contemporary architectural colors are not definitively fixed. They are rather liquid and metaphorical. Whereas the more traditional architectural colors have delivered clearly and precisely the intended symbolic meaning and visual information, those of today are less definitive and embody a more liquid and conceptual value system. This paper discusses the denoted signification and the meaning effect of the metaphorical color system found in contemporary architecture. This paper analyzes works of architecture from the late 20th century, when dramatic change sin architectural color system surfaced, to the more contemporary creations. Here, three categories of color are suggested, namely material color, spatial color and liquid color. Each categories considered in connection with deconstruction, holistic interactivity and the multiplicity of meanings that may result as information from the external world is perceived as stimulus to the inner mind. Contemporary architectural color scheme is characterized by its unpredictable vagueness of meaning, synesthetic engagement of imagination and chance, and expansion of the inner and outer world, all of which contribute to a metaphorical effect. The metaphorical color system of contemporary architecture can be classified into three dimensions, and it connects with human consciousness and amplifies itself through flexible and fluid communication. In this process non-physical colors materially serve as formal logic and room for varied interpretation of architectural space and our conceptual framework.

  • This paper describes a method of estimating miniature train location by color vision for development of an intelligent railway system model. In the teal world, to control trains automatically, GPS(Global Positioning System) is indispensable to determine the location of trains. A color vision system was used for estimating the location of trains in an indoor experiment. Two different rectangular color bars were attached to the top of each train as a means of identifying them. Several trains were detected where they were located on the track by color feature, geometric features and moment invariant, and tracked simultaneously. In the experiment the identity, location and direction of each train were estimated and transferred to the control computer using serial communication. Processing speed of up to 8 frames/sec could be achieved, which was enough speed for the real-time train control.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a model that can quantitatively diagnose personal color. Representative color systems for personal colors have limitations in that it oversimplify personal color diagnosis types or it is difficult to distinguish objective differences between diagnosis types. To develop a brand new color system that enhances this, a PCCS color system capable of logical color was introduced and reclassified based on the four main properties of color. Twenty diagnostic types, which are more diverse than the existing color system were proposed and a quantitative method was used to evaluate the degree of harmony with a subject to find an optimized type of subject. The experimenter's individual competency and subjective intervention were minimized by devising a matrix in which a type suitable for the subject is derived when the coded evaluation result is substituted. Finally a quantitative diagnosis model of personal color consisting of three stages: property diagnosis, coding, and seasonal diagnosis was constructed. It can be seen that this will give diversity, reliability, and accuracy to the existing diagnostic methods.

  • Originally the COS system was developed based on fashion colors. But in interiors many other color groups are used frequently, so the COS system is somewhat insufficient for interior design work. The purpose of this study is to verify the pratical use of the COS system in finishing colors of housing interiors and to propose the additional colors based on interior finishings. The COS system and the NCS color system were used for color measurement. The results was as follows. In the hues, Y.YR.GY.PB.B.BG color groups were used for interior material more frequently. And regardless of hues, low saturation and high value colors were used. Most of the colors were inscribed as the COS system and the NCS color system simultaneouly, but muted and grayed color tones like pale.light.grayish.soft cannot be founded in the COS system. Therefore more subdued and soothing tones of Y.YR.GY.PB.B.BG color groups should be added to the COS system.

The Characteristics of Color on Korean Costume by Basic Culture (기층문화를 통한 한국복식의 색채 특성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine a unique characteristic of the colors of the costumes in Korean basic culture in the aim of seeking the characteristics and the conceptual meanings of colors found in the majority’s culture. The scope of the basic culture was divided into folk belief, folk game and folk play. Within these limits, the colors of the dress, accessories, instruments were extracted by comparing with the naked eye in NCS Color System. For the analysis of hue and tone, the secondary dimensional analysis using NCS color system and the three-dimensional analysis using the software, COLOR 3D Version 2.0, were done. The result of this investigation is that the colors of the costume in the Korean basic culture are white, gray and black of achromatic color and yellow, yellowish red and purplish blue. This confirms that the colors based on Five-elements color are becoming the basis too basic culture. And Arche-pattern, which is a characteristic commonly found in the Korean traditional society, was shown as a characteristic of color. The colors of the costumes in Korean basic culture are uniquely adopted by the Korean civilians according to their religious and philosophical living standard. This study is meaningful in seeking a root for the formation of their unique color culture.
