  • The Communication Ocean, Meteorological Satellite (COMS) as the one of the national space program has been developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARl). The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the main payloads ofCOMS which will provide consistent monitoring of ocean-colour around the Korean Peninsula from geostationary platforms. The ocean color observation from geostationary platform is required to remedy the coverage constraints imposed by polar orbiting platforms. In this paper the main characteristics of GOCI are described and compared with the current ocean color sensors. The GOCI will provide the measurement data of 6 visible channels and 2 nearinfrared channels (40Onm - 900nm). The high radiometric sensitivity is essential of ocean color sensor because of the weak water leaving radiance.

  • The influence of atmospheric aerosol on satellite ocean color data were evaluated using SeaWiFS monthly standard mapped image products. The atmospheric optical thickness (AOT) was increased in spring and summer, and it showed the strong positive correlation with remote sensing reflectance, normalized waterleaving radiance /solar irradiance, at 555 nm (Rrs555) which is a component of the satellite chlorophyll estimation. Such the high AOT and high Rrs555 pixels showed overestimation of satellite chlorophyll in spring, especially in the area which showed large phytoplankton absorption which 1s expressed by low remote sensing reflectance at 443, 490 and 510 nm (Rrs 443, Rrs490 and Rrs510).

  • One of the most important tasks of ocean color observations is to determine the distribution of phytoplankton primary production. A variety of bio-optical algorithms have been developed estimate primary production from these parameters. In this communication, we investigated the possibility of using a novel universal approximator-support vector machines (SVMs)-as the nonlinear transfer function between oceanic primary production and the information that can be directly retrieved from satellite data. The VGPM (Vertically Generalized Production Model) dataset was used to evaluate the proposed approach. The PPARR2 (Primary Production Algorithm Round Robin 2) dataset was used to further compare the precision between the VGPM model and the SVM model. Using this SVM model to calculate the global ocean primary production, the result is 45.5 PgC $yr^{-1}$, which is a little higher than the VGPM result.

  • We present a simple algorithm for detection of red patches by remote sensing in coastal waters of Korea. The red tide patches can by identified by the relative intensity of red band signal with respect to the blue-green background signal, provided the radiometric signals only in the sea area are properly stretched. We tested our algorithm by Ocean COlor Monitor(OCM) data of Indian Satellite IRS-P4, which has been received from 2001 by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute of Korea. A comparison of our results with observation shows that the locations of red tides derived from remote sending imagery by our algorithm are in accordance with observations.

  • Morphing method, one of classic image processing algorithms, has been used in various application fields. The motivation of this work is to investigate its applicability in consideration to geo-spatial data including airborne or space-borne images. For this purpose, the Beier and Neely morphing algorithm is tentatively implemented in the form of a prototype with user interface. As the results, this feature-based morphing with paired image sets can be used for general users: image simulation using two or more images and construction of color-blending image between source image and destination image in different types. Some simple application cases were demonstrated. This scheme is the simple and useful approach for those who want to utilize both geo-spatial data sets and airborne/space-borne image sets.

  • In this research, the WEF AX and APT(Automatic Picture Transmission) data receiving and image processing software using PC/AT called WADIPS(WEFAX and APT Data Integrated Processing System) Software has been developed. The main functions of WADIPS software are follow : 1) Real time receiving and saving to hard disk of WEFAX and APT data 2) B/W(Black and White) and false color display 3) Image enhancement using histogram stretch and color control 4) 2-4 times zooming 5) Hard copy of data using dithering and patterning 6) Animation 7) File management 8) On line help. WADIPS can be used in the offices or persons need real time meteorological information and education offices to teach the image processing technique and general characteristics of meteorological satellites.

  • Much effort has been made in the radiometric calibration of the ocean scanning multispectral imager (OSMI) since after the successful launch of KOMPSAT-1 in 1999. A series of calibration coefficients for OSMI detectors were obtained in collaboration with the NASA Sensor Intercomparison and Merger for Biological and Interdisciplinary (SIMBIOS) project office. In this study, we ompare the OSMI level-2 products (e.g., chorophyll-a concentration) calculated from the NASA cross-calibration coefficients with the SeaWiFS counterparts. Sample study areas are some of diagonostic data sites recommended by the SIMBIOS working group. Results of this study show that the OSMl-derived chlorophyll-a concentration agrees well with the SeaWiFS counterpart in Case 1 water; however, differences become larger in Case 2 water.

  • In this study, spectroradiometer data were coupled with fluorometer data to find out the best suited bands ratio to monitor the chlorophyll a concentration for inland water. Remote sensing reflectance measurements were used to evaluate the performance of several default ocean color chlorophyll algorithms for SeaWiFS data. This study shows that the chlorophyll a concentration from fluorometer and reflectance from spectroradiometer lies in exploiting the signal provided by the chlorophyll a red absorption peak near 670nm. Two-band ratio based on a ratio of reflectance 670 and 700nm provided a good correlation for a linear model, compare with blue-green two band ratio.

  • From the view point of data fusion, we integrate LIDAR data and digital aerial images to perform 3D building modeling in this study. The proposed scheme comprises two major parts: (1) building block extraction and (2) building model reconstruction. In the first step, height differences are analyzed to detect the above ground areas. Color analysis is then performed for the exclusion of tree areas. Potential building blocks are selected first followed by the refinement of building areas. In the second step, through edge detection and extracting the height information from LIDAR data, accurate 3D edges in object space is calculated. The accurate 3D edges are combined with the already developed SMS method for building modeling. LIDAR data acquired by Leica ALS 40 in Hsin-Chu Science-based Industrial Park of north Taiwan will be used in the test.
