  • This paper mainly focuses on the Korean Folk Village and Beijing Si-He-Yuan, according to the color theory of hue, value and chroma of Munsell color system to demonstrates the similarities and differences of the traditional upper-class housing between South Korea and China. As the neighboring countries sharing very similar culture and philosophy which owe to the continual communications between China and Korea in the history. The Obangsaek which is derived from the thought of five-elements profoundly and deeply impact on the color selection of traditional housing in both countries. According to the quantitative analysis of photographs, it was found that: 1. The commonly used colors in Korea are Y, YR and neutral color, but in China, people usually used R and GY, especially the high chroma red in Beijing Si-He-Yuan was used as a symbolic color. 2. The chroma preference of traditional housing reveals that people in China used to apply the polychrome and various brightness, on the contrary, the color of low chroma and high lightness were used to be applied in Korea which can give the sense of simplicity and tranquility. 3. Red, one of the Obangsaek affects the color characteristic of Beijing Si-He-Yuan critically but scarcely impact on the color characteristic of Korean Folk Village.

  • The present study is following a series of research investigations on design resources coming from collected data referring to users' awareness and preferences. The aim of this research is to test the Healthcare Environmental Color Index as a basis for practitioners in the field of healthcare design. An array of color samples selected from previous research, have been presented to the respondents via an online survey, in order to identify the preferences of the two groups on the relation between environmental color and health. As a result of the first experiment and through the comparison of processed data, the maximum percentage of respondents from each group is validating the relation between environmental color and health. For the second experiment we intend to highlight the patterns of color preferences for each group, and thus to test the color samples healing function. The compared data also showed a higher awareness of Koreans than Romanians on the potential of color applied to healing environment. Last but not least in the third experiment we show the top five color samples preferred by each group. It is significant that the comparison of the results validated once more some of our previous findings related to the healthcare environment, such as: the general preference for the green hue (associated to fatigue relax according to color psychology) and the blue hue (sedation release effect) but also the yellow hue - associated to bright energy. Three out of the top five preferred color samples have been identical to both groups while the other two samples have shown characteristic variations. These results show that similarities are strong and can be used in a glocal design strategy as an accessible tool for any practitioner. Based on the Healthcare Environmental Color Index and users' preferences analysis, a new design culture for healthcare can be established and developed.

  • This study examines the color image of uniform of airline cabin crew according to the demographic characteristics of the customer and demonstrates how it affects the cognitive image of airlines. Adjective adjectives were derived for uniform color images of all eight airlines in Korea and analyzed the image of airline brand color. Based on the analysis of color images, the difference in perception according to the demographic characteristics of passengers was analyzed. When the colors of airline uniforms are mainly blue, sky blue, white and ivory, they have a lot of trust, neat and elegant images. Uniforms with primary colors such as red, orange and green beans are found to have a lot of cheerful, developmental and enterprising images. In addition, the empirical analysis of the impact of the customer's cognitive perception and favoritism on the uniform color image of the airline crew showed that the more positive the airline's positive perception of the uniform color image, the more positive the cognitive image is. In other words, the empirical analysis revealed that the airline's uniform color image, its cognitive image of the airline, and its popularity have significant positive relationships.

  • For building an urban image, various elements such as symbolic building, ethnic characteristics, historical background, natural environment, and diverse cultural elements can influence on it. Many cities in developed countries are showing their unique urban image reflecting their own culture, history, and aesthetic tastes. Especially color, one of the major design elements, has greater impact than other visual factors to form an urban characteristic. Despite the long history and cultural background, Seoul as a capital city of Korea does not show an unique city image with the perspective of color. Recently, Seoul has been designated as '2010 World Design Capital' and implements various urban design projects. As a leading city of design, Seoul is trying to make its urban identity through the own symbolic environment color. The purpose of this study is to find an environmental color scheme for developing a desirable urban design through several cases of foreign countries. For the purpose, Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Tokyo were selected as case cities. Each of the cities showed their own cultural characteristics and made their unique urban image by appropriate usage of their natural environment, symbolic building, emblem of country, and so on. We need to consider these successful cases to build up the image of Seoul.

  • This paper describes ASIC design for brightness revision control, A LED Pixel Matrix (LPM) design and LPM in natural color LED vision. A designed chip has 256 levels of gradation correspond to each Red, Green, Blue LED pixel respectively, which have received 8bit image data. In order to maintain color uniformity by reducing the original rank error of LED, we adjusted the specific character value 'a' and brightness revision value 'b' to pixel unit, module unit and LED vision respectively by brightness characteristic function with 'Y=aX+b'. In this paper, if designed custom chip and brightness revision control method are applied to manufacturing of natural color LED vision, we can obtain good quality of image. Furthermore, it may decrease the cost for manufacturing LED vision or installing the plants.

  • In this paper, face recognition algorithm, by using skin color information of HSI color coordinate collected from face images, elliptical mask, fratures of face including eyes, nose and mouth, and geometrical feature vectors of face and facial angles, is proposed. The proposed algorithm improved face region extraction efficacy by using HSI information relatively similar to human's visual system along with color tone information about skin colors of face, elliptical mask and intensity information. Moreover, it improved face recognition efficacy with using feature information of eyes, nose and mouth, and Θ1(ACRED), Θ2(AMRED) and Θ 3(ANRED), which are geometrical face angles of face. In the proposed algorithm, it enables exact face reading by using color tone information, elliptical mask, brightness information and structural characteristic angle together, not like using only brightness information in existing algorithm. Moreover, it uses structural related value of characteristics and certain vectors together for the recognition method.
