  • A spinifex textured komatiite sample of Early Tertiary age, from the Gorgona Islands of Colombia in South America, was petrographically and geochemically studied, and compared with the previous researches of the komatiites including other Precambrian komatiites in South Africa, Western Australia and Canada. The sample shows the komatiitic characteristics in its petrography and geochemistry very well, i.e. in high specific gravity (2.98) and density (3.2), rock forming minerals, spinifex texture, major and race element abundances and REE pattern. In particular the REE pattern for it strongly suggests that the Gorgona komatiite must have been crystallized from a magma generated from a depleted mantle as that of Munro Township area in Ontario, Canada which is pyroxenite komatiite or basaltic komatiite of Group I of the Archean.

  • Colombia experiences a population growth in their metropolitan areas through an accelerated urbanization process, a housing deficit and a shortage of urban developable land. To solve these problems, the central government developed a national policy for a large-scale housing city development including supra-municipalities planning instruments such as Macroprojects. However, the amount of housing land supplied by this policy is insufficient and additional policies for shortage housing and qualitative deficit are required, particularly in regions with a high concentration of population. The purpose of the study is to compare urban development systems of Colombia and Korea and explore the possibility of applying guidelines to Colombia through i) comparing the capital region cities of the two countries with an asymmetry context method, ii) comparing both urban planning system founding similarities and differences, and iii) suggesting new urban development challenges in the Bogotá metropolitan area based on Korea's new town experience.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the sensory quality characteristics of coffee under various processing and roasting conditions of green beans. Colombia green bean samples were obtained from three processing methods: natural, pulped-natural, and washed methods. The green beans were roasted differently according to Agtron number: light (Agrton #65), medium (Agtron #55), and dark (Agtron #45). Moisture content, density, color value, pH, and total dissolved solid contents (TDS) were measured, and quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) with 23 sensory attributes was performed for nine coffee samples. Hunter L values were significantly elevated with the degree of processing but reduced with roasting intensity. The pH values of the nine coffee samples were 5.6~6.2 and significantly increased with intensity of roasting. TDS decreased with an increase in processing and increased with roasting intensity. QDA results show that smoky aroma and nutty and chocolate flavor significantly increased while fruit and floral aroma decreased with intensity of processing. The attributes of brownness, oily surface, smoky aroma, bitter and burnt flavor, and greasy and heavy mouthfeel significantly increased while fruity and floral aroma, black tea, sour and umami flavor, pureness, and softness decreased as roasting intensity increased. Principle component analysis showed the overall significant relationships between 23 sensory attributes and nine coffee samples under different processing and roasting conditions.

  • Generally, the image of Colombia is constituted as a dangerous country in war against guerrillas and with greater cocaine production. The massacre of Bojayá, taken to the theater work Kilele by Felipe Vergara which forms the object of analysis of this paper, was an event that has most affected the sensitivity of Colombia in the first decade of the 21st century due to the absurdity of its occurrence and the magnitude. The work Kilele not only represents the social drama of Bojayá as a bitter and nightmare past, but breaks the veil of death and communicate with the souls that, according to their beliefs, still hang in limbo. The main goal of this act is to go to reintegration of fractured society, celebrating a funeral rite worthy of the deads that wander various spaces of limbo. This article analyzes the epic structure in Kilele, rituals related to the African spirituality, and the fragmentary structure of the work. Finally this paper intends to reveal how it helped to recover from the trauma of the massacre.

  • Advanced nonlinear effective stress constitutive models are started to be frequently used in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) site response analysis for assessment of porewater generation and liquefaction potential in soft soil deposits. The emphasis of this research is on the assessment of the implementation of this category of models at the element stage. Initially, the performance of a coupled porewater pressure (PWP) and constitutive models were evaluated employing a catalogue of 40 unidirectional cyclic simple shear tests with a variety of relative densities between 35% and 80% and effective vertical stresses between 40 and 80 kPa. The authors evaluated three coupled constitutive models (PDMY02, PM4SAND and PDMY03) using cyclic direct simple shear tests and for decide input parameters used in the model, procedures are recommended. The ability of the coupled model to capture dilation as strength is valuable because the studied models reasonably capture the cyclic performance noted in the experiments and should be utilized to conduct effective stress-based 1D and 2D site response analysis. Sandy soils may become softer and liquefy during earthquakes as a result of pore-water pressure (PWP) development, which may have an impact on seismic design and site response. The tested constitutive models are mathematically coupled with a cyclic strain-based PWP generation model and can capture small-strain stiffness and large-strain shear strength. Results show that there are minor discrepancies between measured and computed excess PWP ratios, indicating that the tested constitutive models provide reasonable estimations of PWP increase during cyclic shear (ru) and the banana shape is reproduced in a proper way indicating that dilation and shear- strain behavior is well captured by the models.

  • Purpose: This study aims to compare protection against diphtheria and tetanus conferred on the mother and the neonate before and after maternal vaccination against tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap), transfer of antibodies, and the variables that could impact on the protection. Materials and Methods: The study followed a cohort of 200 pregnant women from a region in Colombia, contacted during prenatal control before vaccination and upon delivery. The work determined immunoglobulin G antibodies against diphtheria and tetanus of pregnant women and umbilical cord. The proportion of protection, the geometric mean of the concentration, and the transfer of maternal antibodies were calculated. The protection profile of the pregnant women was explored by using multiple correspondence analysis. Results: The concentration of antibodies against diphtheria was significant before and after vaccination of the pregnant women (p=0.000) with proportions of 85.0% and 97.5%, respectively, and of 98.6% in the umbilical cord, with significant antibody correlation (Spearman's coefficient=0.668, p=0.01). Sero-protection against tetanus before vaccination was at 71.0%, after at 92.6%, and in the umbilical cord at 95.9%, with significant antibody concentration before and after vaccination (p=0.000) and antibody correlation (Spearman's coefficient=0.936, p=0.01). Sero-protection was higher when the pregnant women were vaccine 8 to 11 weeks before delivery. Unprotected pregnant women were those not vaccinated during pregnancy. Conclusion: The high proportion of protection against diphtheria and tetanus and the placental transfer support the need to promote maternal immunization with Tdap.

  • The use of prestressed concrete box girder bridges built by segmentally balanced cantilevers has bloomed in the last decades due to its significant structural and construction advantages in complex topographies. In Colombia, this typology is the most common solution for structures with spans ranging of 80-200 m. Despite its popularity, excessive deflections in bridges worldwide evidenced that time-dependent effects were underestimated. This problem has led to the constant updating of the creep and shrinkage models in international code standards. Differences observed between design processes of box girder bridges of the Colombian code and Eurocode, led to the need for a validation of in-service status of these structures. This study analyzes the long-term behavior of the Tablazo bridge with data scarcity. The measured leveling of this structure is compared with a finite-element model that consider the most widely used creep and shrinkage models in the literature. Finally, an adjusted model evidence excessive deflection on the bridge after six years. Monitoring of this bridge typology in Colombia and updating of the current design code is recommended.

  • This study was designed to use the safety management data for residual pesticides in imported banana based on the investigation of pesticide residue detection of agricultural products with different origins in the Republic of Korea. From the USA, EU, UK, Japan and Korea from 2007 to 2018, the results of banana residue pesticides were summarized into detected pesticides, number of inspections, number of pesticide detection cases, and the amount of detected pesticide residue. A total of 109 pesticides were detected for the pesticide residue and pesticide detection rate was 4.58% in 206,894 cases. The detection rate was ranged within 10.62-24.62% for chlorpyrifos, imazalil, methyl-bromide, azoxystrobin, carbendazim, pretilachlor and thiabendazole. Among them, chlorpyrifos was detected most often followed by imazalil, azoxystrobin, thiabendazole, bifenthrin and carbendazim. According to the results of monitoring data for bananas in EU, Japan, USA, UK and Korea, the kinds of detected pesticides were 85, 57, 23, 18 and 8, respectively. Azoxystrobin, bifenthrin and chloropyrifos were found in monitoring data of all countries. Fourteen and twelve pesticides were detected in bananas from Costa Rica and Ecuador, respectively. Imazalil and thiabendazole were detected in 16 and 11 origins, respectively. Myclobutanil and iprodione were detected in four and two countries, respectively. In bananas from Costa Rica, azoxystrobin and bifenthrin were detected 11.8 and 9.8%, respectively, and the detection rate of azoxystrobin was 19% in bananas from Colombia. Chlorpyrifos was detected 22.7, 13.3 and 10.8% in bananas from Belize, Colombia and Costa Rica respectively. Myclobutanil was detected in bananas from Colombia and Costa Rica with the rate of 17.9 and 10.4%, respectively.
