  • A colloid refers to dispersed particles of a solid or liquid having the diameter of about $10^{-5}-10^{-7}cm$. Such colloidal silver is produced by electrolysis. In this paper, colloidal silvers of various concentrations according to charge amount and time are produced, and their anti-microbial activities are measured. And optimum conditions for emulsion are measured by varying the concentration of colloidal silvers. Further, stability of the emulsion is measured with a Zeta potential, chrome meter by applying colloidal silvers to creams (W/Si, O/W, MLV).

  • We investigated the feasibility of dispersion polymerization without any stabilizer, which has been considered essential for ensuring colloidal stability. By employing small amounts of a lyophilic comonomer, 4-vinyl pyridine, styrene was successfully polymerized by dispersion polymerization in aqueous alcohol without stabilizer to afford stable poly(styrene-co-4-vinyl pyridine) copolymer microspheres. The stable microspheres were produced in the 4-vinyl pyridine range of 2-15 wt% to styrene. Without 4-vinyl pyridine, severely coagulated particles were obtained, implying that the poly(4-vinyl pyridine) moiety endowed colloidal stability. The polymerization kinetics, behavior, and properties of the ultimate particles showed general features of dispersion polymerization. The study results suggest that stabilizer- tree dispersion polymerization is possible, thereby facilitating the synthesis of impurity(stabilizer)-tree polymer particles.

  • A water soluble polymer, polycondensate of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin (PBE), was synthesized by condensation of 1-butylamine and epichlorohydrin. The characteristics of PBE were determined by IR spectroscopy, low angle light scattering measurement, and $\zeta$ potential measurement. Its interactions with colloidal bentonite particles in aqueous medium were also studied. The results of the studies are as follows : PBE is a cationic polyelectrolyte carrying tertiary ammonium ions on its backbone. The average molecular weight of PBE is found to be about 1,600. The adsorption of PBE on the colloidal bentonite particles are well described with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. As the amounts of PBE adsorbed on the bentonite particles increase, the $\zeta$ potential of the particles changes its sign from negative to positive. This inversion of charge confirms that PBE is cationic in nature. The adsorption of PBE onto the bentonite particles was found to occur through cation exchange reaction. It has been shown that PBE has flocculation effects on the colloidal suspension of bentonite. It has also enhanced effects of filtrability on the digested sludge.

  • This study aims to prepare a colloidal silica-containing powder to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of rivaroxaban using a self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS). We investigate the impact of colloidal silica on a nanoemulsion system for preparing powdered SNEDDS. The liquid SNEDDS comprises 30/20/50 (w/w/w) Peceol/Cremophor RH40/Tween 80, which results in the formation of the smallest droplets. Three powdered SNEDDS formulations are prepared by suspending the liquid SNEDDS formulation using colloidal silica and spray drying. The powdered SNEDDS prepared with liquid SNEDDS and colloidal silica at a ratio of 1/0.5 (w/w) exhibits the highest water solubility (0.94 ± 0.62 vs. 26.70 ± 1.81 ㎍/mL) and dissolution rate (38.4 ± 3.6 vs. 85.5 ± 3.4%, 45 min) when compared to the drug alone. Morphologically, the liquid SNEDDS is adsorbed onto colloidal silica and forms smaller particles. In conclusion, an SNEDDS containing rivaroxaban, prepared using colloidal silica, facilitates the creation of a nanoemulsion and enhances the water solubility of rivaroxaban. Accordingly, this technology holds significant potential for commercialization.

  • Homogeneous precipitation of $Y^{3+}$ with urea has been studied in order to investigate the effect of urea concentration on the preparation of monodispersed colloidal "Yttrium Hydroxycarbonate $(Y(OH)CO_3 \cdot nH_2O)$". As the initial concentration of urea increased, the mean size of colloidal precipitates decreased, and the rate of precipitation of $Y^{3+}$ increased. When the initial concentration of urea was higher than $4.0 \sim 7.0 M$, precipitates obtained were no more monodispersed colloidal particles, but coagulated big particles; and, although the initial concentration of urea increased over 4.0 M, the rate of precipitation did not increased. It is important to decide the proper initial concentration of urea, because excessive urea can cause the environmental problems such as water pollution.

  • This study was aimed at improving the white index (WI) to prepare thermally expandable microspheres for wallpaper. In particular, thermally expandable microspheres were prepared for different colloidal silica particle sizes to study thermal properties, foaming ratio, and WI. The spheres obtained from tiny colloidal silica were the best in terms of WI and yellowing. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis results show that small colloidal silica particles are more likely to be adsorbed physically or chemically to the microsphere surface, thereby improving WI at higher temperatures.
