The effects of temperature on the structural behavior of polar class vessels have been experimentally and numerically investigated. Experiments were carried out on single frame structures made of steel material, DH36, which is used for outer shell of the vessels making transit through the polar region. A knife edge type striker was dropped down onto single frame structures. The temperatures of the single frames were set to $-30^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$ and room temperature. The deflection around the mid-point of the single frame was measured and numerically simulated using finite element model. Strain rate effect on the structural behavior has been investigated and turned out that the strain rate effect can be neglected. From the results of the experiment and numerical analyses, it has been noticed that the permanent deflection at lower temperature was reduced due to a temperature hardening of material as expected.

In this paper elasto-plastic dynamic behavior of solid is analyzed by using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) without tensile instability which caused by a clustering of SPH particles. In solid body computations, the instability may corrupt physical behavior by numerical fragmentation which, in some cases of elastic or brittle solids, is so severe that the dynamics of the system is completely wrong. The instability removed by using an artificial stress which introduces negligible errors in long-wavelength modes. Applications to several test problems show that the artificial stress works effectively. These problems include the collision of rubber cylinders, fracture and crack of plate.

The effects of flow interaction between adjacent sprays in twin-spray system on the spatial distribution of injected liquid (water) and drop size distribution in condensable (steam) environment were carefully observed through experiments. The spatial distribution of injected liquid in twin-spray system appears to be more uniform than the simple superposition of the spatial distributions of liquid obtained from each individual spray. Drop size distribution was obtained by using the immersion sampling technique. It was found that, in the twin-spray, the larger numbers of small drops are collected throughout the spraying region due to the increase of entrainment velocity of ambient steam compared with the case of simple superposition of each individual spray. Moreover, in the overlapped portion of the twin-spray, the drop size distribution was changed also due to the collision between large drops. As a result, the behavior of twin-spray system (and eventually multiple-spray system) can not be predicted precisely by simple superposition of the behaviors of each constituting spray. Hence, for the design of multiple spray system, the effect of flow interaction between sprays should be taken into account seriously.

In this paper, the porous metal PM-35 is proposed as the filler material of filled thin-walled tubes (FTTs), and a series of experimental study is conducted to investigate the dynamic behavior and energy absorption performance of PM-35 filled thin-walled tubes under impact loading. Firstly, cylinder solid specimens of PM-35 steel are tested to investigate the impact mechanical behavior by using the Split Hopkinson pressure bar set (SHP); Secondly, the filled thin-walled tube specimens with different geometric parameters are designed and tested to investigate the feasibility of PM-35 steel applied in FTTs by the orthogonal test. According to the results of this research, it is concluded that PM-35 steel is with the excellent characteristics of high energy absorption capacity and low yield strength, which make it a potential filler material for FTTs. The micron-sizes pore structure of PM-35 is the main reason for the macroscopic mechanical behavior of PM-35 steel under impact loading, which makes the material to exhibit greater deformation when subjected to external forces and obviously improve the toughness of the material. In addition, PM-35 steel core-filled thin-wall tube has excellent energy absorption ability under high-speed impact, which shows great application potential in the anti-collision structure facilities of high-speed railway and maglev train. The parameter V0 is most sensitive to the energy absorption of FTT specimens under impact loading, and the sensitivity order of different variations to the energy absorption is loading speed V0>D/t>D/L. The loading efficiency of the FTT is affected by its different geometry, which is mainly determined by the sleeve material and the filling material, which are not sensitive to changes in loading speed V0, D/t and D/L parameters.
The behavior of biological particles in DAF (dissolved air flotation) process was analyzed by employing PBT (Population balance theory). After decline growth phase of activated sludge, the value of the initial collision-attachment efficiency was increased over than 0.35 corresponding relatively high value in the whole life cycle of microorganism. For practical application of DAF as a solid separation process. It is desirable that microbial particles should be operated to perform high solid removal efficiency in biological wastewater treatment.
This paper presents an obstacle avoidance of a mobile robot by the subgoal generation using infrared sensors. When an obstacle appears on the path which the robot is moving forward the robot has to get information, such as distance between the robot and the obstacle and the shape of the obstacle for avoidance behavior. Our collision avoidance algorithm needs the only distance between the robot and the obstacles. The distances are used for subgoal generation. Simulation results show that a robot can go to the goal, carrying out subgoal generation and avoiding obstacles.

Digital Manufacturing is a technology facilitating effective developments and agile productions of the product via digital computer models representing physical and logical schema and the behavior of the real manufacturing systems including manufacturing resources, environments and products. For the successful application of this technology, a digital factory as a well-designed and an integrated environment is essential. In this paper, we constructed the sophisticated digital factory of a Korean automotive company's body shop, and conducted precise simulations of unit cell, lines and the whole factory for the collision check, the production flow analysis and the off-line programming. We expect that this digital factory of the body shop helps us achieve great savings in time and cost for many manufacturing preparation activities of the new car development.
Virtual Manufacturing is a technology to facilitate effective product development and agile production by computer models representing the physical and logical schema and the behavior of real manufacturing systems including manufacturing resources, environments and products. For the successful application of this technology, a virtual factory as a well-designed and integrated environment is essential. In this research, we constructed a sophisticated virtual factory model of an automotive company's paint shop, and performed precise simulations of unit cells, lines and whole plant operations for collision check and off-line programming. It is expected that this virtual paint shop is useful for achieving time and cost savings in many manufacturing preparation and planning activities of new car development processes.
Effect of ball filling ratio on the behavior of balls motion and their collision characteristic in a tumbler-ball milling of metal powder are investigated by a computer simulation. The discrete element method and the extended Kelvin model composed of nonlinear spring and nonlinear dashpot were employed in the simulation. It can be possible that analysis of the individual balls motion in a three-dimensional actual mill by the two-dimensional model simulation, since the simulated trajectories of ball paths are in relatively good agreement with the actual ones. It knows that the balls motion in the tumbler-ball mill is strongly influenced by the surface conditions of the balls and mill container wall. The energy consumption of the individual balls during impact and the impact frequency of the individual balls increased with an increase in the ball filling ratio and showed maximum values at about 50-60% ball filling ratio, and then decreased.
This paper presents design of a vehicle stop-and-go cruise control strategy based on analyzed results of the manual driving data. Human drivers driving characteristics have been investigated using vehicle driving data obtained from 100 participants on low speed urban traffic ways. The control algorithm has been designed to incorporate the driving characteristics of the human drivers and to achieve natural vehicle behavior of the controlled vehicle that would feel comfortable to the human driver under low speed stop-and-go driving conditions. Vehicle following characteristics of the cruise controlled vehicle have been investigated using a validated vehicle simulator and real driving radar sensor data.
