In this paper, a planar model for mechanics of a vehicle/pedestrian collision incorporating road gradient is derived to evaluate the pre-collision speed of vehicle. It takes into account a few physical variables and parameters of popular wrap and forward projection collisions, which include horizontal distance traveled between primary and secondary impacts with the vehicle, launch angle, center-of-gravity height at launch, distance from launch to rest, pedestrian-ground drag factor, the pre-collision vehicle speed and road gradient. The model including road gradient is derived analytically for reconstruction of pedestrian collision accidents, and evaluates the vehicle speed from the pedestrian throw distance. The model coefficients have physical interpretations and are determined through direct calculation. This work shows that the road gradient has a significant effect on the evaluation of the vehicle speed and must be considered in accident cases with inclined road. In additions, foreign/domestic empirical cases and multibody dynamic simulation results are used to construct a least-squares fitted model that has the same structure of the analytical one that provides an estimate of the vehicle speed based on the pedestrian throw distance and the band within which the vehicle speed would be expected to be in 95% of cases.
The purpose of this study is to predict how the actual accident changes by reconstructing the accident with an Autonomous Emergency Braking system (AEB) based on the actual accident of the LTAP-OD (Left Turn Crossing Path - Opponent Direction) intersection. A virtual AEB sensor was developed, and 150 head-on collision accident reports were secured to the insurance company to reconstruct the accident. As a result of the accident type analysis, a total of 13 types of head-on collision accidents were derived, and it is the LTAP-OD intersection accident with the highest frequency. In the LTAP-OD intersection accident, the simulation was conducted by applying the virtual AEB of each vehicle, the accident rate decreased by 90% or more when the AEB of the left-turn vehicle was applied, and the accident rate decreased by 50%. In addition, the most frequent collision types in LTAP-OD accidents were the front bumper on the driver's side of a vehicle going straight and the front bumper on the passenger's side of a vehicle turning left.

Recently Digital-TachoGraph(DTG) was mounted mandatorily in commercial vehicles(Taxi, Bus, etc.). DTG records accurate and detailed information of the running state of vehicles related to traffic accident, such as Time, Distance, Velocity, RPM, Brake ON/OFF, GPS, Azimuth, Acceleration. Thus those standardized data can play an important role in traffic accident investigation and reconstruction. To develope the accurate and objective method using the DTG data for the reconstruction of traffic accident, we had conducted several tests such as driving test, high speed circuit test, braking test, slalom test at Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute(KATRI), and collision test at Korea Automobile insurance repair Research and Training center(KART) with the vehicle equipped with several DTG. Development of the program which enables the reading and analysis of the DTG data was followed. In the experiments, we have found velocity error, RPM error, brake signal error and azimuth error in several products, and also non-continuous event data. The cause of these errors was deduced to be related to the correction factor, the durability of electronic parts and the algorithm.
The seating postures of passengers in the automated driving vehicle are possible in atypical forms such as rear-facing and lying down. It is necessary to improve devices such as airbags and seat belts to protect occupants from injury in accidents of the automated driving vehicle, and collision safety evaluation tests must be newly developed. The purpose of this study is to define representative types of head-on collision accidents to develop collision standards for autonomous vehicles that take into account changes in driving behavior and occupants' postures. 150 frontal collision cases remained by filtering (accident videos, images, AIS 2+, passenger car, etc…) and random sampling from approximately 320,000 accidents claimed by a major insurance company over the past 5 years. The most frequent accident type is a head-on collision between a vehicle going straight and a vehicle turning left from the opposite side, accounting for 54.7% of all accidents, and most of these accidents occur in permissive left turns. The next most common frontal collision is the center-lane violation by drowsy driving and careless driving, accounting for 21.3% of the total. For the two types above, data such as vehicle speed, contact point/area, and PDOF at the moment of impact are obtained through accident reconstruction using PC-Crash. As a result, two types of autonomous vehicle crash safety test scenarios are proposed: (1) a frontal oblique collision test based on the accident types between a straight vehicle and a left-turning vehicle, and (2) a small overlap collision test based on the head-on accidents of center-lane violation.
We suggest a method which solves the planar, two vehicle collision reconstruction problem. The method based on the Principle of impulse and momentum determines the pre-impact velocity components from Post-impact velocity components, vehicle Physical data and collision geometry. A novel feature is that although the impact coefficients such as the restitution coefficient and the impulse ratio are unknown, the method can estimate automatically the coefficients and calculate the pre-impact velocity components. This reverse calculation is important for vehicle accident reconstruction, since the pre-impact velocities are unknown and Post-impact Phase is the starting Point in a usual collision analysis. However. an inverse solution is not always Possible with the analytical rigid-body impact model. Mathematically, one does not exist under the common velocity condition. On the other hand, our method has a capability of reverse calculation under the condition if the absorbed energy during the collision process can be estimated using the crush profile. To validate the developed collision reconstruction a1gorithm, we use car-to-car collision test results. The analysis and experimental results agree well in the impact coefficients and the Pre-impact velocity components.
Multi-car rear-end collision accidents have three categories: sequential collision from the rear which is commonly referred to as chain reaction collision, sequential collision from the front, and mixed-order collision. This paper suggests several effective methods of reconstruction analysis for multi-car rear-end collision accidents. First, by incorporating the traditional empirical method which uses vehicle damage caused by brake dive and passenger injuries, with results of theoretical analysis made within mechanics of rigid body, it is made possible for the method to be put to immediate practical use. A methodology to precisely analyze multi-car rear-end collision accidents was suggested using a simulation program simultaneously with a video event data recorder which is starting to be widely used in domestic vehicles. To go beyond the simple intuitive analysis of the video event data recorder, the simulation analysis based on the results of video analysis was executed to acquire various information, so that the causes and responsibility could be clearly stated.
Recently a traffic accident of heavy duty vehicles under the mandatory installation of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) is often reported in the media. Heavy duty vehicle accidents are normally occurring a high number of passenger's injury. According to report of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, FCW (Forward Collision Warning) and AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) were associated with a statistically significant 12% reduction in the rate of police-reportable crashes per vehicle miles traveled, and a significant 41% reduction in the rear-end crash rate of large trucks. Also many countries around the world, including Korea, are studying the effects of ADAS installation on accident reduction. Traffic accident statistics of passenger vehicle for business purpose in TMACS (Traffic safety information Management Complex System in Korea) tends to remarkably reduce the number of deaths due to the accident (2017(211), 2018(170), 2019(139)), but the number of traffic accidents (2017(8,939), 2018(9,181), 2019(10,095)) increases. In this paper, it is introduced a traffic accident case that could lead to high injury traffic accidents by being equipped with AEB in a bus. AEB reduces accidents and damage in general but malfunction of AEB could occur severe accident. Therefore, proper education is required to use AEB system, simply instead of focusing on developing and installing AEB to prevent traffic accidents. Traffic accident of AEB equipped vehicle may arise a new dispute between a driver's fault and vehicle defect. It is highly recommended to regulate an advanced event data recorder system.
In order to reconstruct vehicle-pedestrian collision accidents, this paper presents a fuzzy tool to estimate accurately the impact velocity of the vehicle using parameters which could be easily collectable at the accident scene. The fuzzy rules and membership functions were set up using number of over 200 domestic and foreign data from accidents and empirical tests and 700 data from multibody simulation experiments. The developed fuzzy tool deduces the category of pedestrian trajectory and impact speed of the vehicle using 4 membership functions and 2 logic rules. The membership function of throw distance was differently set according to the deduced category of trajectories. The implemented fuzzy program was validated through comparing with the domestic and foreign empirical data. The output results agree very well in impact velocities of vehicle resulting the accuracy and usefulness of the developed tool in the reconstruction analysis of vehicle-pedestrian collision accidents.

This paper presents design concepts, specifications and performances of a newly developed Black Box, the reconstruction analysis tool with the records, and results of validation tests. The Black Box can detect crash accidents automatically, and record the vehicle's motion and driver's maneuvers during a pre-defined time period before and after the accident. The items of the Black Box included the acceleration, yaw-rate, vehicle speed, engine RPM, braking application, steering and several digital inputs for recording driver's maneuvers. To detect the accident-related-crash, it is important to understand characteristics of the crash signal, which are much different from those of normal driving. Therefore, analytical considerations should be taken in designing pre-filtering circuits and selecting appropriate parameters for identifying crash accidents. And, it is necessary to select proper combination of motion sensors and design proper pre-filtering circuits in order to describe the vehicle's motion. The analysis algorithms were developed and implemented which can perform accurate detection of crash accidents, simulating pre-crash trajectories, and calculating parameters for reconstruction analysis of crash accidents. The developed Black Box was installed on passenger cars and several types of validation tests were conducted. Through the tests, the accuracy of the recorded data and usefulness of the analysis tool for reconstruction have been validated.

Pedestrians involved in traffic accidents manifest unique trajectory characteristics depending on the collision speed, vehicle configuration, and pedestrian postures. However, the existing analytical models for pedestrian movements do not fully include the rotational characteristics of the pedestrians because they assume a two dimensional parabolic trajectory. This faulty assumption in the development of these models limits their applicability and reliability This study investigated the pedestrians movement at collision by computer simulation. The simulations are carried out by using HADYMO, which is a special simulation software system for dynamic movement analysis. Vehicles and pedestrians are modeled and verified via real crash worthiness experiments. Simulations are performed for various collision speeds, vehicle configuration, and pedestrian postures. Since the simulation uses multi-body dynamics, It can express irregular phenomena of the bodies quite well. The results can be exploited for vehicle design and traffic accident reconstruction.
