  • The objective of the research stated herein is to observe the elastic and inelastic behaviors and ultimate capacity of 1:5 scale 3-story reinforced concrete frame. Pushover tests were performed to 1:5 scale 3-story reinforced concrete frames with and without infilled masonry. To simulate the earthquake effect, the lateral force distribution was maintained by an inverted triang1e by using the whiffle tree. From the test results, the relation ships between the total lateral load and the roof drift, the distribution of column shears, the relation between story shear and story drift, and the angular rotations at the critical portions of structures were obtained. The effects of infilled masonry were investigated with regards to the stiffness, strength, and ductility of structures. Final collapse modes of structures with and without infilled masonry were compared.

  • One of the major threats to the stability of classical columns and colonnades are earthquakes. The behavior of columns under high seismic excitation loads is non-linear and complex since rocking, wobbling and sliding failure modes can occur. Therefore, three dimensional simulation approaches are essential to investigate the in-plane and out-of-plane response of such structures during harmonic and seismic loading excitations. Using a software based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM) of analysis, a three dimensional numerical study has been performed to investigate the parameters affecting the seismic behaviour of colonnades' structural systems. A typical section of the two-storey colonnade of the Forum in Pompeii has been modelled and studied parametrically, in order to identify the main factors affecting the stability and to improve our understanding of the earthquake behaviour of such structures. The model is then used to compare the results between 2D and 3D simulations emphasizing the different response for the selected earthquake records. From the results analysis, it was found that the high-frequency motion requires large base acceleration amplitude to lead to the collapse of the colonnade in a shear-slip mode between the drums. However, low-frequency harmonic excitations are more prominent to cause structural collapse of the two-storey colonnade than the high-frequency ones with predominant rocking failure mode. Finally, the 2D analysis found to be unconservative since underestimates the displacement demands of the colonnade system when compared with the 3D analysis.

  • The stability and structure of bluff-body stabilized hydrogen flames were investigated numerically and experimentally. The velocity of coflowing air was varied from subsonic velocity to a supersonic velocity of Mach 1.8. OH PLIF images and Schlieren images were used for analysis. Flame regimes were used to classify the characteristic flame modes according to the variation of the fuel-air velocity ratio, into jet-like flame, central-jet-dominated flame, and recirculation zone flame. Stability curves were drawn to find the blowout regimes and to show the improvement in flame stability with increasing lip thickness of the fuel tube, which acts as a bluff-body. These curves collapse to a single line when the blowout curves are normalized by the size of the bluff-body. The variation of flame length with the increase in air flow rate was also investigated. In the subsonic coflow condition, the flame length decreased significantly, but in the supersonic coflow condition, the flame length increased slowly and finally reached a near-constant value. This phenomenon is attributed to the air-entrainment of subsonic flow and the compressibility effect of supersonic flow. The closed-tip recirculation zone flames in supersonic coflow had a reacting core in the partially premixed zone, where the fuel jet lost its momentum due to the high-pressure zone and followed the recirculation zone; this behavior resulted in the long characteristic time for the fuel-air mixing.

  • This paper reports on experiments addressing the buckling and collapse behavior of an innovative built-up cold-formed steel (CFS) columns. The built-up column consists of four individual CFS lipped channels, two of them placed back-to-back at the web using two self-drilling screw fasteners at specified spacing along the column length, while the other two channels were connected flange-to-flange using one self-drilling screw fastener at specified spacing along the column length. In total, 12 experimental tests are reported, covering a wide range of column lengths from stub to slender columns. The initial geometric imperfections and material properties were determined for all test specimens. The effect of screw spacing, load-versus axial shortening behaviour and buckling modes for different lengths and screw spacing were investigated. Nonlinear finite element (FE) models were also developed, which included material nonlinearities and initial geometric imperfections. The FE models were validated against the experimental results, both in terms of axial capacity and failure modes of built-up CFS columns. Furthermore, using the validated FE models, a parametric study was conducted which comprises 324 models to investigate the effect of screw fastener spacing, thicknesses and wide range of lengths on axial capacity of back-to-back and flange-to-flange built-up CFS channel sections. Using both the experimental and FE results, it is shown that design in accordance with the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and Australia/New Zealand (AS/NZS) standards is slightly conservative by 6% on average, while determining the axial capacity of back-to-back and flange-to-flange built-up CFS channel sections.

  • Shear failure and core concrete crushing at plastic hinge region are the two main failure modes of bridge piers, which can make repair impossible and cause the collapse of bridge. To avoid the two types of failure of pier, a composite pier was proposed, which was formed by embedding high strength concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column in reinforced concrete (RC) pier. Through cyclic loading tests, the seismic performances of the composite pier were studied. The experimental results show that the CFT column embedded in composite pier can increase the flexural strength, displacement ductility and energy dissipation capacity, and decrease the residual displacement after undergoing large deformation. The analytical analysis is performed to simulate the hysteretic behavior of the composite pier subjected to cyclic loading, and the numerical results agree well with the experimental results. Using the analytical model and time-history analysis method, seismic responses of a continuous girder bridge using composite piers is investigated, and the results show that the bridge using composite piers can resist much stronger earthquake than the bridge using RC piers.

  • Seismic fragility was assessed for non-seismic reinforced concrete shear walls in Korean high-rise apartment buildings in order to implement an earthquake damage prediction system. Seismic hazard was defined with an earthquake scenario, in which ground motion intensity was varied with respect to prescribed seismic center distances given an earthquake magnitude. Ground motion response spectra were computed using Korean ground motion attenuation equations to match accelerograms. Seismic fragility functions were developed using nonlinear static and dynamic analysis for comparison. Differences in seismic fragility between damage state criteria including inter-story drifts and the performance of individual structural members were investigated. The analyzed building had an exceptionally long period for the fundamental mode in the longitudinal direction and corresponding contribution of higher modes because of a prominently insufficient wall quantity in such direction. The results showed that nonlinear static analyses based on a single mode tend to underestimate structural damage. Moreover, detailed assessments of structural members are recommended for seismic fragility assessment of a relatively low performance level such as collapse prevention. On the other hand, inter-story drift is a more appropriate criterion for a relatively high performance level such as immediate occupancy.

  • An efficient finite element method has been introduced for analysis of metallic sandwich plates subject to bending moment. A full model 3-point bending FE-analysis shows that the plastic behavior of inner structures appears only at the load point. The unit structures of sandwich plates are defined to numerically calculate the bending stiffness and strength utilizing the recurrent boundary condition for pure bending analysis. The equivalent models with the same bending stiffness and strength of full models are then designed analytically. It is demonstrated that the results of both models are almost the same and the FE-analysis method incorporating the equivalent models can reduce the computation time effectively. The dominant collapse modes are face buckling and face yielding. Since the inner dimpled structures prevent face buckling, sandwich plates with inner dimpled shell structure can absorb more energy than other types of sandwich plates during the bending behavior.

  • This paper focuses on assessing the failure of one of the transmission towers that collapsed in Winnipeg, Canada, as a result of a microburst event. The study is conducted using a fluid-structure numerical model that was developed in-house. A major challenge in microburst-related problems is that the forces acting on a structure vary with the microburst parameters including the descending jet velocity, the diameter of the event and the relative location between the structure and the jet. The numerical model, which combines wind field data for microbursts together with a non-linear finite element formulation, is capable of predicting the progressive failure of a tower that initiates after one of its member reaches its capacity. The model is employed first to determine the microburst parameters that are likely to initiate failure of a number of critical members of the tower. Progressive failure analysis of the tower is then conducted by applying the loads associated with those critical configurations. The analysis predicts a collapse of the conductors cross-arm under a microburst reference velocity that is almost equal to the corresponding value for normal wind load that was used in the design of the structure. A similarity between the predicted modes of failure and the post event field observations was shown.
